Yesterday, on facebook, i wrote unkind words to someone i consider a friend, although a distant and rarely seen one, someone whose values i share, and whose intelligence i respect a great deal. We have different views on strategy in the current crisis, and while i feel that we need to act forcefully and immediately, on the streets, in protest, he does not. That is okay, but it is not okay that our trains of facebook thought collided, got off track, and we ended the back-and-forth in an unkind way. Yet i know that this movement needs my friend, needs his rationality, his desire to work within the system, just as much as we need the fierce warriors who are ready to set fire to our cities. And later in the day, he pointed out in another post that there is way too much hatred and exaggerated rhetoric coming from the extreme revolutionary perspective of this movement. And he is right, and it is not just hatred against trump. Soon after i read my friend's post, which so clearly pointed out the counter-productivity of our group's hatred, i read a comment on someone's timeline about chuck schumer, the senate minority leader, of the democrats. Schumer seems to me to have abdicated his responsibility to protect the people. He is not standing up to trump's heinous appointments, and his voice is not being heard. He is useless, indeed counterproductive to this cause for individual freedom, and collective cohesion. However, the person went too far in his criticism, revealing the writer's own fear, weakness, insecurity, and hatred. He wrote that schumer is a "New York Jew", not the boxer that speaker harry reid had been, implying schumer is a wimp because he's a new York jew. Well, to this unkind and hurtful person, I AM A JEW as well, living in new york my whole life, and i know a lot of new york jews who are extremely active in this struggle. So please, keep your prejudiced mouth closed! I now want to have nothing to do with you, and that, in and of itself, weakens the movement.
Please, everyone, recognize that we are in this together, it is an assault on all of us, even the duped minds who voted for trump. The trumpite who told me to 'rot in hell' last Friday doesn't even know what she is saying and doing. The greedy businessmen, on the other hand, and other americans who voted for trump simply because of their need for economic security, everyone else be damned, they are the real leaders of this assault on human decency, with trump at the forefront, a difficult-to-manage mouthpiece which might end up doing things, such as staging trade wars, which will hurt even them.
