The Outsiders Musical review (spoilers…obviously)

So uhh…. AWESOME

One of my favorite parts is the choreo EVERYTHING about the choreo was absolutely fantastic!! And Johnnys actor was such a great pick.

I had front row spots twards the side and after the end of act one and two my whole body was full of crumb rubber because that’s all on the floor of the stage, so cool!

Honestly the only part I didn’t like was the fact that Cherry went into Johnnys hospital room to talk to Ponyboy. But other than that this was such a phenomenal musical.

The best part? The fact that fuckin THOMAS HOWELL (MOVIE PONYBOY CURITS) was there and a few rows behind me!!! I tried to get my book signed but this worker there stopped anyone who tried. 😔

One more thing that confuses me in The Outsiders (in general)

People say ‘oh my gosh Johnny and Dally are written in past tense!!’ But from what I can tell… everyone is. Maybe it’s specific parts but I still don’t get it.

Can someone please help me understand the socs?

I’ve read the book 2 times and the movie 3 times yet I can’t seem to understand them. Maybe it’s because we mostly see the greasers’ point of view but there’s a few key points I still have trouble understanding, and I would love other people’s insights/opinions.

1-Cherry says she doesn’t like the side of Bob that’s drunk and rude, as well as what she said about hating fights; yet she says if she ever sees Dally again (arguably the most ‘hood’ out of the main greasers) she’ll fall in love with him.

2- Randy’s conversation with Ponyboy. I understand the base layer of their conversation but I don’t really *understand* it you know?

3- Bobs reason for drinking. Yes, I understand he was in a way neglected his whole life and just wanted to be truly seen by his parents but at the same time that just has a hint of it being such a non-issue you know?

4- Cherrys last (?) interaction with Ponyboy (before the rumble). Maybe I don’t understand it because I read through it fast to get to the rumble on the first read; yet I still can’t seem to understand it. Mainly the reason why Pony thinks she’s pitying him.

5- Just Cherry’s character in general. She is probably the person I understand the least out of everyone in the book/movie.

so the socs are hypocritical in nature and they're a reflection of middle to upper class baby boomers at the time. bob and dallas have a few similarities but where she will gloss over or outright deny bob's bad parts, she acknowledges and even puts dallas down for his because dallas is poor and not rich. you see this in her being angry and pushing dallas off while only standing up to bob once and still eventually getting in the car with him and still singing his praises somewhat.

it continues after bob dies, she sort of backpedals on his behavior she didn't like when she and ponyboy talk again. cherry talks up his good qualities then even though she has the evidence in front of her he was way worse. on one hand, this can be chalked up to grieving and not wanting to speak ill of her boyfriend. on the other hand, it's clear she would never do this for any greaser she knows. there's also how gender is viewed at this point in time; it's not acceptable for a good rich girl to be with a bad greaser, because she'd be labeled a certain way she would not get with a rich, bad boy.

that last interaction is sort of a part of that conflict where in order to stay in the good graces of her class, to protect herself and out of her own ego, cherry aligns herself with being rich and not wanting to see bob's long time victim. she doesn't want to really look at someone bob harmed because she still think bob was intrinsically somewhat good. pony thinks she's pitying him because she's talking to him but won't be seen in public with him or with johnny who is again bob's victim. she's known he was bob's victim the moment ponyboy told her about the story of johnny being beaten. randy is similar in that while he knows the conflict is wrong, he'd prefer to align with his class while also being a bit of a jerk here. he tells ponyboy directly he would've let the kids burn to death and then only seeks out ponyboy to make himself look better and grovel.

they're hypocritical and self serving.

drinking is a problem affecting all classes but bob's drinking seems to stem out of rich kid boredom more than anything along with his inherent abusive nature. two bit drinks excessively but we never see him willfully abusing someone while drunk. bob has power and two bit doesn't. bob had a mean streak to him which while dallas would take it out on others in a way that was lateral, bob punched down which was very different. and bob notably hurt people much weaker than him whereas dallas would take the action to different hoods and different gangs and people his age vs bob hunting kids in groups while inebriated.

Ok! So- I have a headcannon that Marvin’s ‘Highschool sweetheart’ was actually Cordelia!! Now you might be thinking “but she’s a lesbian!! How could she be into Marvin??” Wellll!! I (also have another headcannon in there) have an explanation!! I think in the song I Wear A Hat that during the song Dr. Charlotte was looking at Cordelia at the table! And that they met and then Cordelia realized she was a lesbian and Charlotte loves when Cordelia wears hats so they have a collection of hats in their house!!!

Do I have any proof to back up my claims?? No!! :D

Today at a bookstore I saw my favorite book franchise, heartstopper and I started to look through the pages and I found a piece of paper. On it where bible verses on how you should ’repent’ for being LGBTQ+ and “let god have mercy on your soul”. I’m writing this because I think that’s such an awful thing to do, how that might hurt people who are going through a rough time and lead them to do something horrible. To themselves or others. But I just felt like you should know that I love you. Wherever you are, whoever you are. You are worthy of love and you are not a burden. And I need you to remember that there are people like you who know what you’re going through, they might have experienced the same. There is room on this planet for you and your beautiful identity

You are worthy and deserving of love.❤️
