in 1992, the writer paul auster published a novel which features a character named maria turner, a photographer and conceptual artist who lives in new york city. the character and her career were closely modeled after the artist sophie calle, a friend of auster's. calle in turn began to model her own life after the fictional artist based on herself and recreated the character's artworks, one of which involved only eating monochromatic meals for a week.
