Lyssen was born in 125 AC, at a time when the winds of war were already sweeping across Westeros. Her arrival was surrounded by omens, as a red moon lit the sky, and many claimed that her mother, Serenya Velaryon, had invoked ancient powers by the sea to ensure the survival of her line.
She belonged to a minor branch of House Velaryon, whose lineage—though removed from the main line—still carried Valyrian blood and, with it, the right to dream of dragons. Serenya was known for her affinity with forbidden texts and ancient secrets, and whispers of witchcraft never left her name. It was said she performed rituals along the coast and poisoned supporters of the Greens during the war, spreading terror among the people of King’s Landing. That fear quelled potential uprisings and prevented assaults on the Dragonpit.
Lyss was a quiet and observant child, more at ease among the lilies of Driftmark or with animals that seemed to seek her out than in the grand halls. Her gray eyes saw far more than her lips ever spoke.
In 131 AC, while the Dance of the Dragons ravaged the Seven Kingdoms, she was brought before a forgotten dragon egg in Driftmark. The moment she touched it, the shell began to crack. From within emerged an extraordinary dragon: pearl-colored scales with blue highlights and steel-bright eyes. They named it Seasnake, in honor of Lord Corlys, though many said this creature surpassed in majesty the war dragons of old.
The war ended with the improbable victory of Rhaenyra Targaryen, who took the Iron Throne. To honor Serenya’s decisive support during the war, Lyssen was later wed to Prince Aegon, the queen’s heir, sealing the blood union between the houses and acknowledging her mother’s sacrifices.
By the age of twenty, Lyss had become a figure of legend: tall and ethereal, with silver hair streaked with a blue strand that seemed to hold the reflection of the waves. At court, she was called the Fleur de Lyss, but among common folk, she was known as the Sea Witch, for no one doubted that ancient ran in her blood.
