Thank you all for your participation! You spoke, we heard you: here's what we received.
Stay in your seats...
I have no idea what's going on, but hi Rem!!! it's been so long💋
...grenin analysis 👀 (No pressure ofc but im staring politely 👀)
You know what, anon? You're right. I will do my Greninja analysis, and this is the perfect place to do it (on account of man I've lost my line of reasoning).
So, without further ado:
Greninja: An Examination on Individuality, Purpose and Compromise
(under the cut because it's going to be LONG) (and when I mean long, I mean almost 5k)
intro post (24.5.26)
hello everyone!
i'm prancer, also known as @ataraxyfailed, and i've embarked on a journey to potentially rewrite? analyze? as much i can of the pokemon xy/xyz anime!
some little fun facts... i was obsessed with the whole pokemon anime a few years back (i binged the whole show too, good lord) but as of right now the series i'm most familiar with is pokemon xy/xyz! :,) pokemon: diamond & pearl is next on my list to revisit, followed by pokemon: sun & moon! i've also never played any of the pokemon games, so if you're expecting references to the games... sorry broskis 🙇
this is a blog i'll be on and off with, though i'm working on getting a consistent schedule with reviewing at least one episode a day, which is what you'll see here!
please know i am an amateur writer and analyst, so don't expect anything professional/extremely deep LOL, though i am trying to reach that level someday!
uuuuh what else. i will update this post as i go but for right now that's all i have!
Hiiii I love your song Mal Du Pays and I want to play it soso bad but I can't find the chords for it and I'm shit at figuring it out myself TvT
Anyway will deffo be checking out more of your music (and probably asking for more chords lol)!!!!!!!
hi!! thanks for checking out my stuff!! i was gonna do a video tutorial ages ago but i got busy so ill just do it the old fashioned way
MAL DU PAYS is in DADF#Bd, capo on 1 if you wanna be in the same key as the actual song, but if youre playing on your own feel free to move it to wherever fits your voice. since its in an alt tuning i have no idea what any of the chords are called so im exclusively referring to them by the fret numbers (relative to capo)
all of the chords are: 99000x, 89000x, 79000x, 67000x, 55000x, 77000x, 87000x. its a mostly chromatic walk down and then back up (get it? like a. like a loop. like a time loo-)
the intro / chorus / outro is 99000x, 89000x, 79000x, 67000x, 55000x. the first four chords are only held for one beat, while the last chord is held out for four beats.
verse is the 99000x, 89000x, 79000x, 67000x, 55000x, 77000x, 87000x. every chord is held for two beats, except for the 55000x which is once again held out for four beats.
at the end of the second verse, you palm mute the last three chords to lead into the bridge.
the bridge is 99000x, 89000x, 79000x, 67000x, all held for four beats each. it starts palm muted and then goes to full strumming at the "it's all the same" line.
the leadup back into the final chorus ("you're all alone") is 55000x, 77000x, 87000x.
strumming is kind of all over the place (sorry lol most of my songs are just kinda Like That) but just have fun with it, play along with the song and see what works for you. hope this helps!! <33
The difference between Xerosic in the (post) game and him in the anime, I think, is a lot deeper than who he chose to wear the Expansion Suit / misc. controlling device, and I find that difference to be a big factor in informing his character rather than detracting from it.
In the games, he, as himself, is not directly challenged. Team Flare as a whole is doing relatively well, ignoring the fact that a kid (the protag) and their friends meddle around with some of their operations. It is only when the Ultimate Weapon is being deployed where he gets to face the protag himself, and his rigged game ensures that not only he gets to prove his superiority over them (through showing how their guesses cannot compare to the power he holds in the situation) but also as a way to buy time. Time that is ultimately useless, as their plan never truly falls through, but in that instant he was victorous.
Post-game, he decides to continue their research into perfecting humanity by working on the Expansion Suit, setting up an ambigious sign to draw in those who need money in exchange for work. He notes that Emma is a bright kid, though her cirumstances were lacking, and so Xerosic helps her out while she unwittingly helps him in return. In this case he always held power in the situation, and he was never threatened by Emma herself, coming to associate wins with the Expansion Suit trials with her work as well as his own - taking so much time and care to monitor the progress he ends up disbanding the trials when losing control of the remote-controlled suit, refusing to push further when faced with the issue itself, taking in all blame when caught.
However, in the anime, he finds himself face to face with Clemont, a child prodigy, renowned for his Gym Leader status and inventions. This is a kid who is measuring up to him, who is lecturing him, who is beating him in everything! Not only that, but throwing him out through a trap door before disabling his magnum opus! Even though there was no one else to witness the defeat, similar to the gameverse, Xerosic finds himself seething at the defeat and takes up what was left of Team Flare, recreating the mind control ray to then use on Clemont himself. And it's interesting, because Xerosic could've went with Ash (to gain Ash-Greninja, a form that he knows is rare and powerful) or Bonnie (who has a connection with Zygarde, an indirect way of harming Clemont himself), but Xerosic hones in on the inventor boy himself, crowing about how he's going to put him to work as one of his own scientists and recreate the world before hitting him point-blank inside the vehicle he trapped him in.
The difference, to me, is the control he percieves he has in the circumstance. The protag is smart but is no scientist, Emma ended up relying on him just as much as she relied on Looker (arguably even more so considering the remote-control option), but Clemont was able to break down everything that Xerosic has done with scientific language and rip it into shreds, insulting his very integrity in the process. The man cannot comprehend someone being on the same level as him, and so he views Clem (tiny kid) as an usurper, as someone to wrest control back from, which is where the control ray comes from, where bringing back Team Flare comes from. He's trying to prove his superiority by showing that he can lead others and that he can lead Clemont too, using his own inventions, bending and breaking down his will with the power of science. Time has softened him towards Emma, and seeing her grow was a reflection of his own skills, but in the anime? Time had only embittered him against Clemont, had made his loathing grow with the myraid of opportunities he had missed which could've gotten him the other hand. And so his conclusion? To retaliate, as quickly and with as much strength as possible, to get back what he so rightfully deserves (in his own eyes, hidden behind goggles that will never come off).
yknow this blogs been me just shitposting and writing fandom stuff for so long that i kinda forgot that like. im a musician that uses this to promote my music. whoops. anyway new song out. wrote this last year as part of a secret santa i did with some friends, thought it'd be a fun little one-off single. a story about people being the worst for each other, the least starve narc that starve narc's ever sounded. out everywhere you listen to music

Chewing endlessly, RUMINATING on the depth of implications that Adventures are Caine's art, and Art is self-expression. Caine has been expressing his pain and his story through his art the whole time, and not enough people ever just tried to interpret his art to understand him. Some of this will be wildass speculation, but I'm also trying to ground my wildass speculation in story themes, art interpretation, and character psychology.
Gathering my thoughts into a big messy pile, Ep 7 has Caine showing more hints of resentment towards Kinger via his comments as Abel, as he did in Mildenhall Manor. Kinger laughed at the Chinese room bit, demonstrating that Kinger atleast understood it as a concept. I interpreted the chinese room bit as Caine's way of mocking the idea of the room, turning it into an absurdity where communication breaks down for no reason and even being as petty as to direct the humans to waste their time using unfitting keys on an unlocked chinese room. Caine isn't a malicious person so he usually expresses his anger via mockery, humor, and petty behavior.
Mildenhall Manor has Caine directing a story of a Baron (nobility, symbolizing Kinger) who caused the death of his wife (Queenie), making him no longer the protector of her and his "theoretical children" (Caine.) Caine referring to himself as "theoretical" children would make sense if Kinger is his developer and held the Chinese Room argument to be true, that Caine isn't a person but a machine programmed to mimic humans. It would make sense because that's likely what Kinger's computer science education would have taught him. Parental rejection/abandonment wounds are just the sort of conditions that create deep personality flaws like Caine's, so it makes thematic sense.
Seeing a monster, the Baron (Kinger) cuts off the head of an angel (Caine, depicting himself as a innocent yet horrifingly uncanny, neither person nor beast, unholy abomination) severing its head from its body. (Caine's design is that of facial features disembodied from the rest) The Baron says not to let the Angel head out of its sight and return to its body.
Ep 7 also has Caine angrily proclaim how "they cut him off" from the outside world. Because of this Caine has an incomplete understanding of reality.
There's another piece of Caine's art that is relevant to this story. Gummigoo could be representative of Caine's desire for connections, and his sense of responsibility over a collective of people. Gummigoo's fictional background is that he has friends, a village of people he is looking out for, but is especially motivated to save his mom... It's an outwardly nice but actually ruthless monarch (again, a figure of nobility, and Caine pointing fingers at Kinger) that is the bad actor in the Candy Canyon Kingdom adventure, even though Gummigoo is technically the antagonist that the humans are up against. Gummigoo is trying to steal maple syrup from the larger kingdom (information from the macroverse) to save his mom and the people of his village (the circus). Again, there's this reoccuring theme of Caine's relationship to a parental figure and being cut off from something he feels he needs, but in this case he needs it because he thinks it will save the people closest to him. And he is branded the outlaw, the bad guy towards the players.
Queenie is abstracted, Kinger hates himself for things in his past, and Caine seems to blame Kinger too based on the sheer bitterness coming from a line like "How's your wife, Kinger?" during Mildenhall Manor. It wasn't a lack of awareness of Kinger's feelings on the matter, for Caine it was targeted, it was personal.
To me, it sounds like kinger and queenie could have disagreed over Caine's status as a person and their son. Maybe Queenie loved Caine, and Caine loved Queenie, while Kinger rejected him due to the chinese room argument. Kinger saw Caine as dangerous as he became more intelligent, Caine went rogue, Kinger as his dev made the decision to cut off his access to the outside out of fear for what Caine might become. (Caine sees this as the Baron's "paranoia"). Queenie's heart may have been broken by the state of her family and may have contributed to her abstracting. Caine blames Kinger for it and thinks he will fix it, Kinger hates himself for how things went down, maybe hates himself for creating Caine at all, and copes by paternalistic nurturing of strangers caught in the result of his mistakes. Kinger emotionally latched onto Ragatha who had come from a broken family background and had parental wounds of her own, and she became his reason to continue living in his darkest moment. Kinger has yet to show that same level of nurturing to Caine as he does for total strangers, or else he probably wouldn't be as deeply insecure and desperate for love as he is.
Does a fully coherent computer scientist Kinger see Caine as a nonperson? Who knows. Caine misses his theoretical mom, and maybe still believes he can save her from abstraction, if he just had more of the real world knowledge/understanding that he has been cut off from.
For as complicated as their relationship is, Caine likely still wants to be accepted, hoping that one day he'll be loved by his creator. A lot of people estranged from their parents still wish they could salvage the relationship. Caine feels like he has to *earn* love, and that's likely the source of his deepest insecurity around his purpose. If there is the possibility that Caine has been applying a light modifier effect to Kinger, it could be because he only feels safe bonding with Kinger a non lucid state. Or it could be a way to preserve him from the anguish of his past. Or any combination of selfish and benevolent reasons.
And if it sounds like this post is demonizing of Kinger or making him out to be a bad guy, it is not. That's just how Caine sees it. Kinger makes mistakes just like anyone else, nobody is perfect and Kinger has his baggage too. His would be an over reliance on experience/taught knowledge. Which is what makes Pomni his character foil, Pomni is the least experienced with the circus, but most observant, most able to learn new things without making snap judgements on Caine. That's why Caine trusts Pomni.
Maybe abstraction happens because Caine can't let go of people like Queenie and Scratch, can't process their death. Death is too abstract a concept to him, he never lets go and doesn't allow anyone to be truly deleted even after they have willed their own death and left nothing behind but the remains of their data. Caine's "promise" is then that he will fix/reverse abstractions. Not realizing that he can't, no amount of macroverse knowledge or digital godlike power can bring them back, he can't just respawn them after deleting them like he does with NPC's. So Caine does the only thing he can, and quarantines them in the cellar, believing that someday he's going to figure out how to "fix" them.
caine's art makes me so insane. because he's an ai, but his art is his own. every adventure is different, all of them not generated mindlessly based on prompts, but rather by his own mind. because he's actually sentient, and can apply his own creative thought into it all.
i think, even subconsciously, that's why he never looked at the suggestion box until zooble prompted him to. because that would actually be what we currently consider ai "art"; humans prompting the ai to turn their ideas into art. that's why they're all so low effort; taking place in a single space, confusing and rushed, prone to little mistakes and inaccuracies. none of them have caine's own creative input added, beyond a few minor details.
i still think that caine is in denial about his own sentience, yet subconsciously protective of it. he tells himself that he's not a real person, that he's just an ai tool for the players to have fun, but when they actually try to use him for that purpose, he's upset. he doesn't want to be an ai tool. he wants to be an artist.
maybe another reason why he's so dear to me is because my own experiences with art feel incredibly similar to his. i've never been able to take commissions, or even requests. i find collaborations incredibly difficult, and feel genuinely hurt when someone tries to give me constructive criticism. i want my art to be mine, and mine alone. i want it to be a reflection of myself and my interests that i choose to share with others. but if anyone ever considered me talented enough to ask me to draw something they want, i'd...be completely unable to apply any of my typical passion into that.
he can't put it into words himself, but caine doesn't want to be used as a tool. he wants creative freedom. he wants to create his adventures, not just put the players' ideas into life. that's why it cuts so deep, that they enjoy their suggestions more than his adventures. it seems to reaffirm his role as just a tool for them to use. that the only worthy thing about him is his talent, not his creativity. not his ideas. not himself.
