“Mythology is quite generally supposed to show us the way the human race thought and felt untold ages ago. Through it, according to this view, we can retraced the path from civilized man who lives so far from nature, to man who lived in close companionship with nature; and the real interest of the myths is that they lead us back to a time when the world was young and people had a connection with the earth, with trees and seas and flowers and hills, unlike anything we ourselves can feel.”
- Edith Hamilton; Mythology (Timeless Tales of Gods and Heroes)

The Ice Box Murders occurred in Houston in June 1965 when elderly couple Fred and Edwina Rodgers were killed in their own home. Edwina had been beaten and shot, and her husband had his head crushed by a claw hammer, his eyes gouged out and genitals removed. Their dismembered body parts, including their severed heads, were found in a refrigerator. Both the couple’s organs were flushed down the toilet and found in a nearby sewer. What is most eerie about this case is that Fred and Edwina were killed on Father’s Day–one week prior to being placed in their ‘’ice box’’. The only suspect in this double homicide is their son, Charles Rogers, 43, who lived with his parents at the time. Charles was described as ‘’reclusive’’ and only communicated with his parents by slipping notes under the door. Most neighbors were unaware he lived with the elderly couple as he was seldom home. Charles disappeared shortly after the act of violence and the case is considered unsolved.
