most of these things are ableism toward people with intellectual disability
because people are so unbelievably and unapologetically ableist toward id people
it has been considered acceptable for decades to make fun of and reject id people, so even progressives do it
if you ask someone to think of an insult, the first insult they'll usually think of is an insult about intelligence. and they never question why that is. they never ask "how did we get here"
intellectual disability is often left out of discussion of ableism, despite a lot of ableism being about it
disabled people will even get upset when abled people assume they're id and will act like it's an insult, instead of getting mad that id people are treated that way
all the strabismus jokes on tv come from ableism toward people with intellectual disability
but every time i say this, people with strabismus miss the point. they say "i hate that people assume i have an intellectual disability"
if you have strabismus, people with your condition often ARE intellectually disabled because strabismus and id (AND autism!) are frequently comorbid. the problem here is that id people are treated badly. that is why, when people assume you are id, they treat you badly. what you should be getting upset about instead, is the fact that id people are treated that way
anyway, i believe it drags down disability advocacy that id people are not supported enough
i think that support for id people, and id/dd people in general, should be a pillar of disability advocacy, and i think it is piss poor, and antihistorical, that they aren't
developmental and genetic conditions, especially conditions where comorbid intellectual disability is common, are highly targeted by eugenics
also, i think the way people see bigots as "stupid people who are thoughtlessly evil" is connected to the fact that abled people view id/dd people as thoughtlessly evil, especially id/dd people who have issues with empathy, theory of mind, boundaries, consequences, and morality
but no one ever even thinks about how we're treated
lastly, "smooth brain" is an actual condition called lissencephaly
("what's id/dd?" look it up. and if you're autistic: you. it's you. you're the dd part.)
