Jace Beleren, Masculinity, and the Trans Experience

(This post is a Twitter thread I wrote in response to a Goblin Lore podcast episode called “Jace Beleren and Toxic Masculinity”.)

I feel I have a unique perspective on this topic as a trans man. Trans man Jace isn’t my headcanon, but it’s an interpretation I love. He’s my favorite character of all time, and as a trans man, I feel like reading Jace’s flaws as toxic masculinity isn’t quite right.

Playing MTG during Social Distancing

With COVID-19 running rampant and governments taking measures to protect us, playing paper Magic has become very difficult if not impossible for a lot of people around the globe. And especially now, in a crisis like this, people need to stay connected and still have some fun amidst it all.

That’s why the LGS I work at decided to polish up a local initiative. Perhaps you’ve seen it float around on Reddit or Twitter before, but here it is: a way to turn a fat pack box into a simple yet effective streaming setup for playing Magic over a video connection! Under the ‘Read More’ I’ve attached the pictures to show how it’s built.

After that all you need is a friend and video-calling service like Skype or Discord or Google Hangouts to play a couple of games of Magic. And not only is this really good to stay connected with your friends during quarantine, it’s also very suitable for playing MTG withh long-distance friends.

And of course, this also works for other card games and board games as well ;)

In times like this, a little fantasy escapism might just be what you need to keep your morale up. I know things can be very difficult right now, but don’t forget about the fun things, good luck, and stay healthy!
