Just learned this absolutely delightful bit of etymology:
During the 15th century, the English had an endearing practice of granting common human names to the birds that lived among them. Virtually every bird in that era had a name, and most of them, like Will Wagtail and Philip Sparrow have been long forgotten. Polly Parrot has stuck around, and Tom Tit and Jenny Wren, personable companions of the English countryside, are names still sometimes found in children’s rhymes. Other human names, however, have been incorporated so durably into the common names that still grace birds as to almost entirely obscure their origin. The Magpie, a loquacious black and white bird with a penchant for snatching shiny objects, once bore the simple name “pie,” probably coming from its Roman name, “pica.” The English named these birds Margaret, which was then abbreviated to Maggie, and finally left at Mag Pie. The vocal, crow-like bird called Jackdaw was also once just a “daw” named “Jack.” The English also gave their ubiquitous and beloved orange-bellied, orb-shaped, wren-sized bird a human name. The first recorded Anglo-Saxon name for the Eurasian Robin was ruddoc, meaning “little red one.” By the medieval period, its name evolved to redbreast (the more accurate term orange only entered the English language when the fruit of the same name reached Great Britain in the 16th century). The English chose the satisfyingly alliterative name Robert for the redbreast, which they then changed to the popular Tudor nickname Robin. Soon enough, the name Robin Redbreast became so identified with the bird that Redbreast was dropped because it seemed so redundant.
I’m not certain how accurate the magpie one is, because I know that Shakespeare made references to them as ‘Maggot pies’

That which we call a rose
I've always stood by the claim
That a rose
By any other name
Would smell as sweet
I know yours means a lot to you, and then some
But it makes no difference to me
I want you to be happy, so l'll use this one
But l'd see no change if you went by Klutzy the Nimble
The only person who seems to understand is you-
That which I should have realised that some time ago-
But even still I can only admit it to two
That mine only means discomfort to me
I recall, all the way back in nursery
The request of my name would have me freeze, panic
What if l'd fabricated every memory
Of my name, or just been pulled from a different world
I knew at the time it was silly
But I couldn't shake the feeling it was wrong every time
But something that makes me feel as though in a frilly,
Two toned collar with the loudest bells there are, is that
There's nothing l'd rather go by.
No name fits better than this
None of them are comfy, none of them are mine Some equal, some worse, none ok, none happy
If the name of the rose doesn't matter
What of rose with no name at all?
Would nothing be as good as anything on the wrapper?
Or would it simply never be called again
I suppose it's hard to refer to something without name
Without establishing what it is to begin with
But to establish what it is must be a right pain
When you've nothing at all to call it by
So why not make up a term?
Decide on something by which to refer to it
Any unused sound to indicate a person, worm or germ
Let I be the only meaning. But that's just a name again
And so what is a name, I ponder again
A string of sounds used to clarify a subject of reference
The sounds themselves shouldn't matter then
So why do mine feel so wrong?
I don’t want a new name. I don’t want one at all
But I don’t want to be ignored or forgotten
So I need something for people to call
When they want me, or to sing my praises, or curse me
Give the hypothetical that I could have any name
But I know that’s the real choice
One that just feels good is my only aim
But I can’t find that. I don’t think it exists.
I used to go by Lilly, when I played and was more young
Then it was my imaginary friend, daughter, and then gone
And now it’s on my mind again but it only feels wrong
I can’t even pretend to be Lilly anymore. That’s gone.
Perhaps I could be a bird, Swift is nice
But I’d feel awkward with it as a name
While I sort of like Sparrow, all bird names are on ice
Until the sad day they don’t all- in my mind- mean you
So what can I be called by then
I wouldn’t mind being nothing at all
A name can’t be right but I can’t be no one when
They call my name. Who will I be? Who can I be?
A rose called a poppy would smell just the same
And I still don’t fully understand the difference it rhyme with makes.
I’m sure I’ll feel right again in my own red name
Eventually. If I can convince myself I ever was.
A rose called a poppy would smell just the same
And I still don’t fully understand the difference it makes
I’m sure I’ll feel right again in my own red name
Eventually. I’ll convince me I ever was if that’s what it takes.

The gif to the picture from the weekend. As you can see the begging is a constant state of the baby crow.
Saw a stag beetle fight off a magpie today it looked like this
?????Corvid??????
No, indeed not!
It is a Red-bellied Woodpecker, I believe!distinctly known for being nature's little drill hammer.
Funnily enough they are often confused with these little critters
Which would be a red headed woodpecker!
-No CORVID detected-
-no yippee-
-just tock tock tock and hammering trees-
it’s for you!

i beat myself up for not knowing enough about my special interests a lot but then i remember the average person off the street has no idea what the carboniferous is and i feel better
are you really bad at it or are you in "good at it" spaces
Me: ah shit, I misidentified that yellow rumped warbler as a female goldfinch, I should literally be hung at the gallows for this. I'm such an IDIOT
My friend, pointing at a vulture: check out that fucked up crow lol
Crows not detected, it’s actually a vulture.
Me: I accidentally misidentified an oriental magpie as a Eurasian magpie. Everyone is going to hate me and flay me alive. I must shut down my blog.
My friend, pointing at a rook: look at that crow doing shaking its feathers
My mum, pointing at a jackdaw: Corvus! There’s a crow!
