“I think men are very thrown off by woman with self-confidence and power. If you’re independent, you have a good job, you make good money, you’re headstrong. Even if you’re struggling with your job but are confident about your future, a lot of men are freaked out by that. Period. It’s like they don't know how to fit into your picture. They think, “Does she even need me?” I guess it taps into some part of low self-worth on their end.”

It was the year 1978 and I had just got hired as a Snow plow trucker working the night shift. The second night I had picked up a shift after some other prick decided to call off. It wasn’t a location I was familiar with but I needed the cash. It was snowing bad out that night and I accidentally lost control of the plow after hitting some ice and ended up in a ditch. I was pissed, being in the middle of nowhere, in the freezing cold with no way of contacting anyone sucked. I had no choice but to go up to the nearest house and ask if they had a landline to call for help.
I didn’t realise it was so cold and dark while in the warmth of my truck. As I stepped out I realised It was freezing to the bone and as dark as night. There were at least 2 feet of snow on the ground. Being this cold I knew I needed to hurry if I didn’t want to freeze to death. I made it to the end of the road where two houses sat, luckily for me they both had their lights on.
As I made my way up the porch I began noticing how eerie the first one appeared but I decided to try it anyways. With each step the floorboards creaked as if they would give out under the pressure. The house was screaming for me to get off it’s precious floors. Before I knew it I was in front of a large padlocked door. I know, I know that was an obviously red flag but I knocked anyways.
I knocked and knocked but no one would answer. It was clear someone in was there though because I could see them peeking at me through the window. As I stood there shivering on the porch I began to become very frustrated. I tried to explain that my plow got stuck and that I just needed to use the phone, but still no one came. I decided to give up and try the house nearby. As I was leaving I noticed something strange. There were no cars in the driveway and we were miles from the nearest city. I couldn’t imagine someone would walk all the way out here in this weather.
As I made my way up the road to the next house I realized there was no sign of life. I didn’t see one car drive by, and I’ve been walking for what felt like an hour. Being dead winter at 10 pm I guess not seeing any cars was pretty understandable, what really freaked me out was that It was dead quiet. I haven’t heard an animal since I stepped out of the cab. At this point I was just ready to get the fuck out of this place.
As I shuffled to the following house I was relieved to see it was fairly nice. I knocked once and the door swung open. I peered in and saw an old, tall man. He was wearing a suit and a top hat that must have been nice at one point, but now was now dirty featured torn edges and whos color had faded as though the man hadn’t changed in a number of years.
I explained right away that my plow had broken down and I needed to use a phone. He seem reluctant to let me in but then settled with letting me use the phone on the porch. He hurried to the phone and lunged it at me as if he couldn’t get rid of me quick enough. I dialed the number and waited as it rang.
I was terribly relieved to finally be able to call out for help. “Thanks for this, man. It’s been a rough night, and I don’t know what I would have done without your help.” He mumbled in response so I asked him if he could repeat himself. He quickly explained “ you’re welcome, you’re welcome now would you hurry up!.” “Certainly, I just wanted to show my gratitude. The people at the house next door wouldn’t even acknowledge me. ”
The color drained from his face. “Wha.. What? would you like to come inside?” I thought that was strange, before he didn’t even want me to use his phone, now he’s inviting me inside? I denied his offer explaining that I just wanted to call for help and get home to my family. As soon as I said this I realized the phone had went silent. “Would you like to come in to call for help? He asked, “I bet it’s freezing out there.” As he stared at me with his dark soulless eyes, I began to feel a sense of dread wash over me. Again, I denied and thanked him for his help. As I made my way down the porch steps he whispered, “Better watch out for the others.” Then he slammed the door.
As I was making my way to my truck I couldn’t help but feel afraid at what the old man said. “That old Geezer was just a creep trying to mess with me,’ I thought to myself. I’ve been so stressed that I didn’t realize how tired I was. I checked my watch, 12:00 a.m. already? How has two hours gone by?
I made my way passed the first house taking the same trail as I did on the way so I didn’t get lost. “Shit.” Almost tripping I looked down a noticed a second set of footprints that seemed to have followed me to the old man’s house. The footprints were not in the shape of a shoe but in the shape of bare feet.
I don’t think I have ever been that scared in my life! At this point my fat ass was running as fast as I could. I finally reached the cab and I jumped in. I locked the doors and peered out hoping not to see anyone following me.
I am a pretty big guy and I usually don’t scare easy. I was so terrified by what I saw next that I have goosebumps just telling you guys this. I heard what sounded like running towards the cab so I got down on the floorboard and tried to hide as best as I could. Not knowing what was out there was eating at me so I just had to look. I swear to this day what I am telling you is true. Standing feet away was a family of ghoulish looking shadows that seemed to be smiling at me.
I dropped back to the floor and waited for what seemed like an eternity. I must have fallen asleep because I woke to a sheriff knocking on my window. I told him about my cab and he offered to give me a ride to the nearest town. After getting into his car I thanked him and asked if he had gotten a call from the man in the house up the road. He looked at me confusily and explained that all the houses on this road had been abandoned for years. He also said I shouldn’t have even been there in the first place. On the way to town we passed sign reading Monkey Jack Road: Do NOT Enter After Dark. @sixpenceee
