House Party - Seth Armstrong , 2017.
American, b. 1983 -
Oil on paper adhered to wood, 8 x 10 in.
a short poem about questions because I hate them
do you know that feeling
when you’re just existing
and suddenly, troublingly
there’s far too many questions?
“Hey, what’s that you’re drawing?”
“For your hugs, I feel a longing…”
but you don’t know what you’re drawing
for nobody’s touch, you’re longing
all you truly long for
is the comfort of home
with your silly splatoon videos
and tightly shut door
when you want to silence the questions
inside your own head
but by the time you find an answer
that train of thought has gone far off the rails
and you know, a spiral it entails.

“It’s okay to feel tired. Take yourself to bed at 9pm, and tuck yourself in like the cute burrito you are. Tomorrow is new and full of opportunities.”
— Unknown
“True friendship is when two friends can walk in opposite directions, yet remain side by side.”
— Josh Grayson
“Can you remember who you were, before the world told you who you should be?”
— Charles Bukowski
"Upon my word you’re a rum ‘un, Moon," he said. "Sometimes you seem as hard as nails and then you talk so that one thinks you’re almost human, and then, just as one thinks one’s misjudged you and you have a heart after all, you come out with something that just shocks one. I suppose that’s what they call a cynic."
"I haven’t deeply considered the matter," smiled George Moon, "but if to look truth in the face and not resent it when it’s unpalatable, and take human nature as you find it, smiling when it’s absurd and grieved without exaggeration when it’s pitiful, is to be cynical, then I suppose I’m a cynic. Mostly human nature is both absurd and pitiful, but if life has taught you tolerance you find in it more to smile at than to weep."
– W. Somerset Maugham, from “The Back of Beyond,” Collected Short Stories, Volume 4 (Penguin, 1963)
My toes are like pebbles, smoothed by the nighttime waves. My hair reaches, drifts, untangles.
