Alright I need some opinions on this one. So I got this online group project right? It’s 3 people in the group. We did a conference call for an hour on Saturday to get the shit straight and the whole time it was me and this other Black lady getting shit together, the white man in the group was like “I’ll just do whatever you guys do” and I already felt red flags rising so fucking fast…but we assigned him work to do anyway and he said he’d do it for the assignment due Sunday. So come Sunday we’re all working on it and he gonna send his part at 4pm with an additional “So I got called into work and won’t be off until 11:15p (the project is literally due 11:30p) but I’ll just review what you guys got.” We’re like…. :/ okay.

We click on his part and for the three questions we assigned him that required paragraphs of answers, he sent 3 sentences and stole the Black lady’s part. So the Black lady and I decided to scrap it and redo the part for him. When it came time to submit the project I submitted that hoe without his name on it considering he didn’t contribute shit and wasn’t planning to. Then I sent the professor a long email explaining his lack of participation and why we don’t want him in our group. Well, this guy found out yesterday and sent me a long ass email upset his name is missing.

Was I in the right here? ‘Cause this Black lady making me feel bad even though we LITERALLY didn’t use a word he submitted due to its unrelatedness to the actual question and the lack of depth/paragraphs. And in the conference call he didn’t contribute anything but the word “Yes”.

Hi Jordan.

You sent one email, not a couple, if my mail servers are working adequately. I removed your name from the project considering your addition and your participation were so inadequate, it did not make any logical sense to keep your name in it as if you contributed as much as ——- and I did. Professor D——-asked for answers that could be melded into a coherent essay, not simple one-sentence answers to the questions. Your contribution amounted to two entire sentences that were not usable in the context of the project, let alone the website we’re creating. Considering that we could not even use the little you did send to us, I do not feel as if you have a claim to the project ——— and I worked for hours on.

We are all working and taking additional classes so that is not an excuse. I do not have any tolerance for slackers, especially with a project as heavy and detailed as this one. I had to help rewrite what you dropped the ball on, which took time out of my own work schedule, and I work for myself—so my time is very precious. If you actually want to contribute something worthwhile that I don’t have to heavily edit or rewrite, then by all means, do so. Otherwise I see no point in putting your name on a project you took no part in.

This is NOT something I will put up with for the remainder of the class. I care very much about my work and the quality of work that is associated with my name, so I will not let simply anything slide or let people take credit for something they have not done. I have no time to do any parts of the project that are not mine. If you want to continue to be in the group, do your share and do it exceptionally. My guidelines are not difficult.

First of all, I think you should be commended for being brave enough to actually take his name off the paper. I’m pretty sure all of us have been in situations with people who did not pull their weight in a project but allowed them to claim academic credit because of social pressure. The reality is that someone should not be able to claim the intellectual property of other people. Especially in situation where you’re all taking part in higher education and all have commitments outside of school. If he didn’t contribute then he shouldn’t get credit, I don’t see what there is to argue about here? No one should make you feel guilty about that. I can’t think of one argument that could be applied where he should get credit for this.
