Hey there! Sorry, I seem to have abandoned Tumblr a bit, haven’t I? I always think it might be useful to use as some kind of scrapbook for posting random things which might turn into articles, but frankly my Twitter feed has ended up as more useful for that these days. I never really quite found a community over here in the same way as I did on Twitter.

So who knows if I’ll ever be back posting here regularly. Maybe I’ll find a use for it again one day, maybe I won’t. In the meantime, I’ve been writing some stuff over on the main Dirty Feed site - including this look at the unbroadcast pilot of Drop the Dead Donkey, which is pretty much encapsulates everything about my writing, for good and ill. So please go over there and have a click around if you’re at all interested in anything I have to say.

EDIT (04/12/18): I left the above open in case I ever did want to come back at some point, but with the recent announcement that Tumblr is banning adult content, I most definitely am NOT coming back.

I have no particular interest in posting porn over here; but it’s such a ludicrous decision that I have no interest in being on a platform which makes such ludicrous decisions.

I haven’t linked to much of what I’ve been doing over on my main site recently. Here’s a good example of the kind of thing I’ve been up to over there - looking at an early version of the famous letter from The Breakfast Club.

Hopefully it’s been improving, rather than steadily getting worse. I think the last one is more readable and shows more of the picture, which is a win-win.

Hey there. Not posted to Tumblr in ages, have I? Sorry, I just haven’t needed to use this place as a scratchpad for a while. Check out the main Dirty Feed site for everything I’ve been up to.

Currently messing around with a new logo for the site though, and this seemed an appropriate place to post my test designs. The idea is that each article will have its own appropriate version of the logo. Still a work in progress, but it’s already better than the current awful one, I think.

Whenever people talk about Rob and Doug’s early radio stuff and Red Dwarf, “Dave Hollins: Space Cadet” is usually dragged out as an example. But if you dig a little deeper into their radio oeuvre, you can find out all kinds of other interesting stuff.

Like, say, a sketch which reads remarkably like an early version of Better Than Life...

Box Office: Hollywood's Franchise Crisis Worsens Over July Fourth

Domestic summer revenue has tumbled more than 8 percent behind 2016 after a string of misses.

So, this is a weird article. The central thesis of the piece is that Hollywood is putting out too many franchise films, and they’d be better off doing more original, one-off films. I make no comment on that. That is endlessly discussed elsewhere.

What I do want to make a comment on is the last paragraph, and the quote from media analyst Paul Dergarabedian.

"Maybe it's time to throw out the current summer playbook and time to adopt the spirit of more gleeful abandon that fueled an excellent first quarter of moviegoing gems, including Beauty and the Beast, Get Out, Split and Logan. It is not too late to course correct. The warning signs are right in front of of us."

Right. Except... Beauty and the Beast and Logan are franchise films. Those examples don’t fit in with the argument the article or the analyst is making at all.

It’s almost as though they don’t understand what the hell they’re talking about, or something.

It’s been a while since I ran down a few recent pieces over on my main Dirty Feed site. Let’s take a look at what December and January had to offer the poor, unsuspecting reader:

The Saga of ofla.info - All about the ridiculous shenanigans on my old blog from over ten years ago. (I spend so much time criticising others for shit like this, so I really need to point out my own nonsense occasionally.)

Tweaking - A few thoughts on the upcoming site redesign of Dirty Feed.

On Permalinks - A short essay about permalink structure... and whether you can ever have a “definitive goddamn opinion” on anything.

Our Little Genius - About a scandal-ridden and unbroadcast Fox game show. Again, I was quite proud of this one, but it didn’t really get the interest I thought it might.

‘Allo ‘Allo: Pigeon Post - All about the edits made to the recent BBC One broadcast of ‘Allo ‘Allo, in memory of Gorden Kaye. Unlike a couple of pieces above, this one did pretty well. Write about something broadcast recently, and people apparently want to read it. How amazing.

I always find it interesting looking back on my pieces after a couple of months, and seeing which bits work and which bits really should have had an extra draft. Maybe I’ll collect together a book of the best stuff one day. 

With some extremely heavy rewriting here and there.
