clarification: im once again at risk of homelessness (fucking surprise surprise) because apparently 80% of my pitiful earnings going towards keeping me housed isnt enough, and the fact that im going without food to pay to live here also isnt enough. i dont really know what im supposed to do. so i need help to keep me afloat and actually eat while i navigate the very tense and volatile housing situation im in without getting outright booted out.
I just recently learned of something extremely dangerous. I haven't looked into it too deep yet, but basically YouTube is introducing their own version of KOSA and they're enforcing it with AI. They have an AI scan your watch history, and will flag you as a specific age group. The only way to undo this flag is to send a picture of your PERSONAL ID to YouTube. This is incredibly intrusive.
Please please please speak out against this! This is a really dubious thing YouTube is doing.
Not so gentle reminder that internet censorship “for the children” via KOSA and the SCREEN Act will only either cut those children out of this heavily internet-dependent world, or will encourage them to get online in ways that are extremely unsafe to people with an age appropriate lack of critical thinking skills.
It will likely effect their schooling to the point where they will have no choice but to give up their information, and if they don’t have a standard id (rare unless they travel with their families or are sick), they will likely have to use face id.

I just activated social anxiety. I called both my Senators to urge them to oppose KOSA, which harms free speech. It scared the shit out of me. I was too scared to continue with the Congressmen and Congresswomen. It should take a while for my anxiety to cool down….

They're trying to bring back KOSA here in the States because OSA successfully passed in the UK. CALL YOUR REPS AND YOUR SENATORS. This would affect fandom. Fanfiction and fanart would no longer be as easily accessible. It's also most definitely going to affect queer people and shows, movies, books, and music that contain queer themes.
You would need to enter your ID to access any of these, which is obviously a horrible idea, considering what the government and world are like right now. They're saying its for the sake of children's safety online. It isn't. It's to monitor what you're doing while you're on the internet and to block you from accessing shit they dont want you to see. It's a mass censorship and surveillance bill.
It's so fucking important that you use your voices right now. Do not stay silent. Call, call, call. Call after business hours so you don't have to speak to anyone if you don't want to. Call frequently. Be as polite and well-spoken as you're able. Let them know how it makes you feel. Tell them how unnecessary it is. Write yourself a script and read it if you have to! JUST CALL.
A child's safety online is the responsibility of their guardian(s). It's not ours.

So, with KOSA apparently being reintroduced all over again, I once again urge my USAmerican followers - call your representatives and make sure that shit doesn't get voted in.
(EDIT: There is now an even worse act that got introduced in the form of the SCREEN act - in a nutshell, it's UK's Online Safety Act on steroids, and if it passes, will be enforced by the FTC, who can and will go even after non-profits like AO3. Call your reps and tell them to vote no on it!)
UK followers - continue signing that one petition to repeal the Online Safety Act.
Canadian - apparently there is another bill they're trying to push through, so you know, take action against that as well.
Reminder that those are NOT about safety, but about control.

Age verification for Wikipedia and Spotify. YouTube banning accounts for under-16s, and rolling out AI to detect if someone is actually 18 based on their viewing history (100% guaranteed to falsely mark autistic adults as children at an irregularly high rate, btw). Banning porn off Steam and itch. Attempts to ban and IP range-block VPNs. Age verification for not just porn, but anywhere you could maybe possibly see porn, including basic social media features like DMs.
