this doesn't affect the outcome of eridan and feferi's fight in any way though it was always going to happen. he doesn't even find out his dad has been executed for being bad at jokes until the next day (in this universe the police force is still run by juggalos)

no, and i didn't write the ones that exist. i didn't want there to be lyrics and was never on board with the idea.

yes. back when we were first working on hiveswap, even before the new york studio fiasco, andrew and i talked a lot about how he didn't want "official voices" for characters. there are a lot of reasons for this, but primarily keeping things open to personal interpretation.

so when he asked me to do an album of songs that were BY their band, this ruling presented a sort of weird challenge. they were just a drummer and a vocalist. how could i make this work? well, in the lore the band is very anti alternian establishment. dammek and by extention xefros were rebels against the empire. so, how come they weren't immediately culled for dissent?

one of the things i suggested stemmed from this original no voice ruling: what if xefros was such a shitty singer the auto-tune mic he used made his voice just sound like warbled nonsense? nobody could understand their lyrics and so all their anti-empire songs flew completely under the radar.

much much later, the old lead writer basically just wrote lyrics and named all the songs and did all that without any input from me.

calliope's "unreliable narration" has kind of become a big conversation topic in the last couple years wrt classpects and gender biases etc but do you think we as a people are ready to have the talk about limebloods. because all that stuff she said about them having weird names and super powerful abilities and all being extinct was literally just her making some shit up so that her troll oc could be more special and unique than everybody else's and they only have to appear in hiveswap now because nobody got the joke back in 2013 and they took the whole thing deadly serious

If your contention is that limebloods were from the outset a metastasized Mary-Sue joke, Caliborn actually name drops that concept in Homosuck:

THE LUCKY MALE IS OBLIVIOUS TO HIS PRIVILEGE. OF NOT BEING CHAINED TO HIS ROOM, WITH THE HORRIBLE SISTER HE DOESN'T HAVE. THE ADVANTAGE MAKES HIM WAY TOO OVERPOWERED, AND THEREFORE HE IS WHAT SOME REFER TO AS A "HUMAN MARY SUE". THIS MAKES HIM LESS SYMPATHETIC, AND GIVES YOU ANOTHER REASON. TO ACTIVELY ROUTE FOR HIS DEATH.

I find it interesting that Caliborn ascribes MALE PRIVILEGE to John, defines MALE PRIVILEGE as being free of femininity, then describes John as a "GIRL" anyways -- though in misogynistic terms, and with scare quotes. This is ironic terf shit: the transfeminine subject is posed as intrinsically misogynistic, upon the same hatred/envy of women that drove Caliborn to kill Calliope and write in her lime blood, as though he were her (which "he" is, which is why "he" is acting as the feminist here, dutifully enacting two-fold self-hatred). This angle on predomination (hey, isn't that a synonym of "privilege"?) is also my theory of what limebloods represent on Alternia -- the lost/gynocided females of an entirely male planet.

Anyway I think limeblood-means-mary-sue has legs!

I said I would get back to this a while ago but put it off because I wasn't able to form more than some cursory thoughts.

if we're talking Caliborn's relationship to the mary sue archetype it would be remiss to overlook his SELF INSERTION GUY, who isn't referred to by that gendered slur in particular but is a direct evolution Calliope's OC: where Callie Ohpeee is a parody of the "Homestuck mary sue" as a broad concept, Caliborn's OC is riffing on one poor guy's mary sue OC in particular. so Caliborn creating his own mary sue feels a bit like crossdressing in the same vein as hemotyping-as-crossdressing. (and in the same way Doc Scratch is kind of like Caliborn crossdressing later on in his timeline.) lest we fail to mention his mary sue's whole look is obviously jacked from John to begin with...

if we're to maintain despite Calliope's fantasies that the limeblood genocide still did actually happen, it also occurs to me that this amounts to English being responsible for the very event that gave Callie Ohpee her tragic backstory; essentially he would be responsible for making Calliope into a mary sue in the first place? so what you call a gynocide also takes on shades of feminising violence.

when you think of trolls as having an insectoid social structure it can sometimes seem redundant that they essentially have two "queens" in the form of the mother grub and the condesce. and i've heard exactly this used as an argument, that "it doesn't make sense to interpret meenah as an insect queen because the mother grub is the insect queen". but trolls having what amounts to 12 genders means that, for trolls, what we think of as 2 gender roles are actually divided up between those 12 castes. so while two queens might seem redundant to a human because in our understanding "queen" or "mother" is just one gender, to a troll the role of "mother" has actually been divided into two different roles; the mother who gives birth and the mother who raises the child. which probably has a lot to do with why meenah finds sex and childbirth to be so disgusting!

looking at it like this could probably go some way to dispelling the confusion around alternia's "drones", too. the question (or assertion) i often hear is "how can drones be anything like ant or bee drones - the males of the colony - when it's trolls, not drones, who are providing the genetic material to the mother grub?" again, what we really see is that sex, reproduction and the social structure have been carefully partitioned from each other: the role of "providing genetic material" has been made totally separate from the role of actually "inseminating the queen", just as the drone's role as breeding male has almost nothing in common with the highblood's role as patriarchal male!

when Caliborn first embarks on his journey as a storyteller he starts out by making his characters act in ways that entertain him but ultimately make no sense because they totally contradicts their personalities (THE ALPHA MALE WHISTLES FOR HIS BITCHES). but his end goal is to tell stories that fit the characters so well they're indistinguishable from the "truth"; as per Hussie's commentary, Doc Scratch can only really "nudge people in the direction of doing the nasty thing that, deep down, they already know they want to do."

Caliborn's main way of interacting with the world outside his session is of course through his command terminal; and while exiles can use these to "command" the heroes, they can't just control them outright. if you command someone to do something they don't want to do, they won't do it! so in this way, Hussie's tutoring of Caliborn with self-improvement literature is a direct parallel to the Mayor improving his relationship with John through self-improvement literature not just visually but thematically; they're both, in essence, being taught to make their "commands" more effective by making their language more persuasive!

i totally think mindfang died by guillotine too btw. i know mindfang and spidermom being the same damn thing is the theme of today's chapter but i think the comic itself hints at this. vriska's guillotine attack is called "guillotine de la marquise" which leads hussie to ask in the printed commentary: "Since these dice belonged to Mindfang at one point [...] did she have to guillotine her own spider mom too?" - but we know that's not true because mindfang's lusus was swallowed whole by pyralspite. so the attack being called "marquise's guillotine" presumably alludes to something else, which i can only guess is mindfang's involvement in the revolution that ultimately ended in her own death... oh hey that's a parallel to vriska making tavros kill her too
