You have made think more deeply about this whole situation. There is a level of accountability that some members need to take when it comes to things like these, because while we can never put it on any memberās shoulders how their fans act we could maybe expect them to be more firm about their stances on some behaviors.
For a while now we have all said at some point or another that tkkrs are like larrys (from 1D) and to be honest this is true and incredibly concerning. Larrys to this day, years after the band disbanded and years after one of the members of their pairing had a child and got married, are still holding onto the delusion that larry is real. They go so far as to harass Louis and his family (including his son), and no matter how much he has said he hates larrys they never stop.
How long are hybe/big hit and bts as a whole going to keep turning a blind eye to this behavior? I get that in the kpop industry shipping is as common as breathing and idols and their companies tend to never full on address it because it generates money and interest and they donāt want to alienate a large portion of fans. But, this is getting worse and worse.
I canāt debate the morality of shipping real life people, iām a jikooker. Even though i call myself a supporter, it still can be considered shipping by the general public and until jikook themselves come out and confirm their relationship, what we are doing IS shipping. And I also canāt say that jkkrs are completely innocent and there arenāt crazies amongst us, although I want to believe the crazies are less than the sane ones.
But one thing i have seen is that out of all the crazy shippers in all the ships in bts, tkkrs are the ones who consistently keep taking things into real life and outside of social media discourse. Just in these last few months we have had 2 tkkrs go to to korea in person to cause harm to Jimin. One even talking about killing him.
I fear that at this point a lot of them are too far gone in their delusions that they will not stop even if taekook themselves tell them to stop, but at least they and hybe can start setting the precedent soon that this is not okay. Because the longer this type of behavior is not addressed properly (and by that i mean with the law and real life consequences) the more we are going to keep seeing cases like these.
Thank you for sharing your nuanced take.
You sent in this ask weeks ago, can you believe it's gotten even worse since then?
Your answer was in regards to this post?
Oh anon,.. I want the spring back in my step... š®āšØš®āšØ December, I am counting on you bitchhhh
The topics raised are indeed something to think carefully about. I don't have the answer and in any case, I can only speak for myself and my behaviour.
The members need to decide for themselves what amount - if any - of accountability they're willing to take on regarding this topic of fan engagement. Yet, I don't think the members have any control over the genie once it was released from the bottle., i.e. the fandom. They too can only take control of their own behaviour. And are people listening when they speak? Not all of them are.
So it's rather up to the agency, and the industry to challenge the toxicity that is partly baked in. It sorta upholds the entire industry. And it's also a double edged sword.
It will probably take industry leaders to demand action. I've always thought the members hinted at wanting to be these change makers, for the sake of their sanity and private lives, but they're victims atp, so we can't demand they be the first to step through the Rubicon and change things.
For now, they have signed a deal with the devil and who knows who the true victims will be in the end.
Let's hope it doesn't come to that. Damn.. even today there was a person with luggage at jk's doorstep. Beyond fucked up.
When it comes to the members, I think of them as separate entities now. So anything coming from each member should be judged separately. There is little to no coordinated strategy here when it comes to their online interactions. We shouldn't overcompensate by blaming people for interacting, in public, with their friends. We can't know what dynamics are really at play behind all this.
We also know the members are completely different people. Maybe only two of them share the most similar ethos in life, but overall they can't be in control of their fellow members' behaviours. You can look at the lack of reciprocity as a gage of how exited or not the other members are at being put on the spot sometimes, but still..it's a skewed perspective to judge from.
Maybe we shouldn't judge at all and just make sure you yourself aren't engaging with that kind of behaviour?
Or is that too much of a cop out answer?
It is the most sane one though. A healthy one too because over-investing in online spaces is slowly robbing us of our ability to empathise at all. We all know it. Still, these asks, this platform, healthy discussions where you're not burning bridges just over a difference of opinion, these too are healthy. Just as long as you know your place in the equation and don't become overly invested, or an asshole.
Random thoughts here, please add your own.
Shipping within kpop is effective engagement
But people do not know their boundaries
Members have a part to play. The older they get the less instruction they need, what you see now is just their personalities, like it or not.
Natural chemistry can't be faked
Friendships and deep bonds form within groups all the time.
Even within real friendships there exists toxic dynamics
Age hierarchy has been described as a toxic element by a lot of Koreans, it overcomplicates friendships in the modern age
People are complicated beings!
Desires like greed and validation are real and should be worked out through therapy
BTS is a lifelong commitment, like it or not, you can't put the genie back in the bottle!!
You can outgrow friends yet still have a relationship with them
I am projecting throughout this list btw, life is messy! like Jikook
No victim is responsible for the behaviour of their - emotional or otherwise - attacker. Full stop.
Being a responsible public figure requires behaviour that is well thought out but people gonna people. Stop judging!
Online platforms fuel the dopamine addiction
The spotlight is bright and casts a dark shadow
