how do you know when an idea is 'the one'?
I liked the process of making the effigies and engaging with materials in the labs. But I feel like I could have been more experimental, and intentional... made more prototypes, further expand the concept and explore alternative final outcomes....
idky but i just dont feel 100% satisfied with what I have created
Photos from a 2015 visit to Penang
Short video documentation of the altar
Final Effigies
Behind the Scenes
Trying to capture the reflections was way harder than I had expected........ and to an extent it kind of looked stupid HAHHAHAHA it wasn't reflective of the experience of standing infront of them irl
Behind the Scenes
Using the largest sheet of white paper I could find hahahahha
Disastrous lighting .....
Attaching the mirrors were the hardest part..... I had to use scrap paper and cardboard to create supports in order to angle the mirrors
Chat w Cytheria
Cytheria mentioned that she lives 5 minutes away from a temple and wanted to share this with me since she noticed I was visiting temples :')
People write down their wishes on wooden panels and hang them on the board, but this kid wrote 祝世界上的每一个家庭平安 (hope that every family on the earth is safe/peace). So cute
Prototype 2
Just 2 pieces to check the fit of the slots
Comparison between the dimensions I wanted and Prototype 1 hahhhahahahahahhahahahaaha
A number of tiny pieces got lost/didn't fit into the final one
Prototype 1
Turned out WAY too big... and the slots weren't tight enough. Didn't really like the orientation of the slices too.
I didn't know that the orientation of the obj that you bring into Slicer would affect its dimensions. When I brought in the obj file, it was on its side, which was why that was the width became the height and the largest dimension of the whole figure. I unknowingly changed the height(which was the width) to the size I wanted, which was why the figure did not turn out in the right dimensions (HAHAHA I don't sound like I'm making sense right now I'm sorry)
Sometimes its hard working digitally because you can't factor in the real life elements like strength/thickness of material, weight.... (that's why we have to prototype and try things out)
Final touches!
Beads, coins, barcodes, zippers....
Joining base and body
Soaking gold parts of joss paper so rub the foil onto the clay as clothes
