Parking Signs 101: No Standing Bus stop

Fine: $115

It is illegal in NYC to stand or park in a bus stop zone;  a bus stop parking ticket is equivalent to a  No Standing violation. This means you can stop to drop-off or pick-up passengers but you must do so immediately within 2 minutes. A bus stop zone begins at the bus stop sign and extends in the direction of the arrow(s) until the next parking sign or the end of the block.

Parking Signs 101: Taxi Stand Fine: $60-$65

The taxi stand sign designates specific areas on a  block where taxis can wait to pick up passengers.   A taxi driver MUST remain seated behind the wheel of her/his cab while in  taxi stand space. A taxi stand is a no standing zone which means any driver, taxi or not, is permitted to stop temporarily to drop-off and pick-up a passenger (but not property). However non-taxi drivers may not park or wait at these locations for an extended period of time

Parking Signs 101: Metered Parking  Fine: $35-$65

The green "metered parking" sign is ubiquitous throughout the five boroughs and is most often found on the city's most active streets and avenues. These signs stipulate that all cars must pay the meter rate and display a receipt from a Muni Meter found on the same side of the block throughout the duration of the designated hours the metered parking regulation is in effect. Each sign may have a time limit for how long you may park. (In our example you may park anywhere on the block for up to 6 hours). There is a 5 minute grace period that allows you to purchase your metered receipt; the 5 minute grace period also applies once the receipt expires.

Parking Signs 101: No Standing

Parking Signs 101: Alternate Side Parking

Fine: $45 – $65

New Yorkers know that city streets can become really grimy in a short amount of time and  if it weren't for the those street sweepers, trash may soon be piling up on a block near you! To allow street sweepers to do their much needed sweeping, the city has placed Alternate Side Parking signs across the city to prevent vehicles from parking on certain sides of the road on particular days of the week.

For 2 to 3 hours a day, you are not allowed to have your vehicle on a particular side of the street designated by an ASP sign so the NYC Department of Sanitation can clean the streets.  The sign also indicates the day/times vehicle are not allowed to park on the given side of the street you find the sign on. On Sundays, holidays and days with inclement weather, the city will suspend alternate side parking regulations, you can find a list of days when ASP is not in effect here.  However, anytime you see a sign with a symbol showing a P with a broom strike-through, beware! You may not park there for the given amount of time.

Parking Signs 101: No Stopping

The “No Stopping” sign is the ramped up sibling of the “No Standing” sign. In areas in which this sign is posted, your car must remain in motion at all times. Not for a minute, not for 30 seconds, not at all. There are a few exceptions to the rule. You may stop to obey a traffic sign or signal or at the request of a police officer. Additionally, stopping is allowed in any case where conflict with another vehicle may arise. In other words, if you’re about to get too personal with the car (or pedestrian, or animal, or even sudden sinkhole) in front of you, please do use common sense and stop your vehicle. Like the “No Standing” sign, “No Stopping” signs may include arrows that designate the beginning and end of a zone, in addition to days and times that a sign is in effect. As always, be sure to read the entire sign before taking action.

Parking Signs 101 - No Parking: Time and Day Limitations

Don't park here during the time and day posted on sign. Sign indicates that vehicles may NOT park at this location during a certain time period on certain day(s). However you can stop your vehicle temporarily to pick up or drop off people or personal property. Temporarily is considered 2 minutes or less.

Parking Signs 101 - Hourly Parking Whenever you see this sign remember! : you only pay to park between the hours displayed. This sign indicates that you may park your vehicle up to the number of hours indicated in the top left corner of the sign.  Typically this location has muni-meters; meters indicate the cost to park at this location.
