Proper Greeting
We’re not perverts! It’s tradition! Groping Norwegians is for Danes what opening Christmas presents is for everybody else: A tradition you never get tired of! There’s a reason why the commercial says, “It’s great to be Norwegian in Denmark” ;) We greet Swedes with a slap on the butt.

Haiti OC
(Kat)
Hey guys! It’s time to review another OC. I’m not sure if this one is good or bad, so I’m kind of walking in blindly here. Let’s begin.
Well, she isn’t whitewashed. That’s a start. But I don’t know why darker skinned OCs have strange amber colored eyes. It looks kind of odd. I think darkening the eyes would be a good move. The hair should also be darker, and making it curly would be better as well.
Isabelle Carriedo-Bonnefoy
Okay, let’s begin with this name.
I don’t really like the use of the name Isabelle here. It’s Spanish. There are Haitian names, and I find myself wondering why one isn’t used. Nadège would be a nice option, as it is a Haitian female name. Alternatives are Stéphanie and Mardochée, also both Haitian female names.
The last name is just a weak attempt. Why isn’t her last name Haitian? I know that it represents the fact that Haiti has deep French and Spanish roots, but a Haitian surname such as Abbé, Dabrezil, Hantus, and Papouloute would be preferable. Anyway, moving on.
is a fan-made character for the series, Axis Powers Hetalia. She represents the country of Haiti
Appearance
Isabelle has very curly dark brown hair,
From what I see, that isn’t curly. I should know. I have curly hair myself. Some alternative hairstyles would be these:
God, I love black women’s hair. It’s so gorgeous.
Another common thing that women in Haiti do is something like this:
in which she likes to put in a braid with three scrunchies of her flag.
That doesn’t sound traditional at all. I would really much prefer one of the two hairstyles I mentioned above.
Also, super curly hair is really hard to braid. You should see me when I wake up. If I tried to braid it without using water on my brush, It would hurt. A lot. I also have a black friend who doesn’t even bother. She just lets her (gorgeous) hair do it’s own thing because it’s too curly for her to do much else than put it in a ponytail or a bun, and she says that those hurt to take out.
She has brown eyes, which can sometimes become hazel.
No. The most common eye color in Haiti is brown, and her eyes should stay that color.
Her uniform is is a multi layered one. It has a light blue long-sleeved shirt with a blue-gray vest. She also wears dark gray puffed pants. She wears light black laced boots, and black gloves. The outfit is topped off with Her blue and white striped hat [with a sun on it], red hair bows, and a small bag that goes across to her chest to her side.
That is not the official military uniform of Haiti.
Since her hair is long, she wears two hair clips; one red, and one blue. |Casual Wear| For her casual attire, she usually wears a sundress, but her favorite is an orange sun dress with white stripes. She also wears sandals with this, revealing an ocean blue nail polish. She also wears a mini conch shell necklace.
I’d really prefer if she wore something like this.
Personality & Interests
This girl appears to be the most shyest and sweetest person in the world at first glance. Deep inside, she is one temperamental, loud mouthed, spoiled brat and otaku.
Please give me a good reason why she should be an otaku.
Also, Haiti would not be spoiled. Do you remember the earthquake in 2010? And then the hurricane that happened this year? Hurricane Matthew? Yeah, I think she’d be a person who enjoyed small things and small acts of kindness, and someone who knows suffering. Those traits do not equal a spoiled brat. Someone who has had those experiences probably would not be all that loudmouthed either.
Being raised by both Spain and France [France mostly], she has two split personalities.
Nope. That is not okay. She would very much have her own personality, and would despise both France and Spain. I made a London OC, and she’s pretty dang British. She isn’t a split personality between Rome, the Scandinavians, Saxons, and Britain. That’s just an unneeded trait.
When around other people, she becomes very nervous, and reveals being anti-social. But, when around her friends, she can’t shut up. She is one friendly person who shows the qualities of a secretary.
Dang it, no! The Haitian people have been through suffering. She would be quite the strong willed person, and would definitely not want to be a secretary.
She’s also a fast learner, and was always a valedictorian.
Haiti’s literacy rate is 64.3% for males and 57.3% for females. It is below the 90% average literacy rate for Latin American and Caribbean countries.
When it comes to her horrible side, you could blame this on both Spain and France. They spoiled her rotten. When she doesn’t get her way, she throws a massive fit, which ends up getting what she wants.
NO. She would not be spoiled, dang it!
None of the European powers were good colonists. The Spanish especially. Both the French and the Spanish did not treat the Haitian people well.
They treated them like dirt, again, the Spanish especially. They took slaves from Haiti, and tried to turn their country into farmland. Another thing that happened was after enslavement, a Haitian slave called Toussaint L’Oveture led an uprising that basically kicked the French out. French pirates during the 1700′s robbed the Haitian people as well, and stole their hunting game.
Napoleon Bonaparte tried to take over during the Napoleonic War, and he was driven out. And also, if she was so called ‘spoiled rotten’ then why did Jean-Jacques Dessalines (who was involved in said revolution during the time that Toussaint L’Oveture was) proclaim the independence of Saint-Domingue two months after the defeat of Napoleon Bonaparte’s colonial forces? He also renamed it Haiti after its original Arawak name. He was the one who led the Haitian people to drive Napoleon out. He also was one of the main people who led the Haitian Revolution from 1791 to 1804. If she loved Spain and France so much, then tell me why she felt the need to rebel against them?
Isabelle likes to listen to music,
Understandable, as music is important to Haitian culture. As it is to most cultures.
draw/paint,
You should probably add quilting, as that is a major art form in Haiti.
read,
As I said, the Haitian literacy rate isn’t very high. It’s below average for the region. So I’d assume that she isn’t very good at reading.
and beautify herself.
She would have no time for that. She would have to deal with problems in her country, and there are quite a few, as Haiti isn’t entirely a wealthy nation. I believe that enjoying beauty and clothes would be fine, as there are some pretty famous fashion designers from Haiti.
She’s also a master at cooking and baking. [France had taught her these things].
She wouldn’t want do do anything with France, seeing as how poorly he treated her. Also, Haiti has it’s own cuisine.
Although she prefers to be alone, she hates being lonely.
She is also an otaku at heart, ever since her first encounter with Japan. She even learned to speak Japanese so that she could read any raw manga.
I have several things to say about that.
For one, Japan and Haiti have basic relations such as trade, but they aren’t strong. They would be enough to qualify Japan and Haiti as acquaintances, but not a strong friendship. And a first encounter would not reveal anything about a person unless you talked to them for a while.
Second, the official languages of Haiti are French and Haitian Creole French. Not Japanese. She has absolutely no reason in the world to learn Japanese or read manga.
Relationships
Francis Bonnefoy [France]
Isabelle really despises him,
Pfft. And she has a good reason to.
but loves him at heart.
That’s okay, as Haitian culture is heavily influenced by French culture.
Every time she encounters France, he immediately calls her his “petite princesse” or “little princess”, although she rejects him.
As she should. Also, that’s creepy. France no.
After her independence from him, she tries to keep her distance, but fails. She usually meets him for lunch, a family reunion, or just to say hi.
I assure you, she’d stay a pretty good distance from him.
Antonio Fernandez Carriedo [Spain]-
As one of her formal parents, Isabelle loves Spain.
As a child, she was spoiled by Spain, and mostly got her friendly and shy traits from him. When around Spain, she feels at home, ignoring the fact that she spent most of her years with France.
True about the France thing, but my explanation above about how poorly the Haitians were treated by the Spanish explains why this is not good.
Dominican Republic [Male]-
Isabelle’s childhood friend; her first friend and lover. When they were kids, they used to do everything together, like living in their little hide-out. Once Spain and France came to colonize, they were separated. A couple years after the separation, they became distant towards each other, but still are lovers deep at heart. *Both are tsunderes, so it’s a perfect match.*
The Dominicans do not like the Haitians. This video explains why:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qKqL8BZqo8Q
ALSO WHY IS SHE A TSUNDERE?!
Ludwig Beilschmidt [Germany]- A person that Isabelle adores. She loves his culture and language, and always travels through his cities. When facing problems, Germany rushes to offer his services. He also counts her as his “little princess”, although France rejects of this relationship, claiming that Germany stole his phrase, and his daughter.
Why? Why is my question for this entire relation. Also, the Germans broke off relations and trade with Haiti in 1918. So that’s a definite no.
Kiku Honda [Japan]-
With Japan’s interesting culture, Isabelle got reeled in. She became an otaku, along with Japan himself, and is an extreme one.
Since Japan and Isabelle share the same traits,
Which are….?
they get along very well. She also visits Japan to see Pochi, since she is a dog lover.
As I said before, there is reason for them to be acquaintances, but no reason for a strong friendship.
Alfred F. Jones [America]-
The “big brother” model towards Isabelle.
Okay, I have a bit to say here. First, I don’t think Haiti would like America for a while after she met him, as he refused to recognize Haiti’s independence when she earned it from France in 1804. He finally did in 1862. He didn’t recognize her as independent for 58 years. I think she’s have some bitterness about that. She would have even more resentment over the fact that he occupied her country from 1915 to 1935. Also, the Americans try to help Haiti in times of conflict or crisis, but they usually just make it worse or don’t help at all.
He always is the first person to help her when she is in the time of crisis.
True, but as I said, it isn’t usually very affective.
Like America, Isabelle loves hamburgers, fries, soda, and other junk food; though she always will remain as a gourmet at heart. She usually comes to visit him for several occasions, or to watch one of his movies.
These relations are giving me a migraine.
Belgium-
Both chocolate lovers, the two share several similarities. They both like to eat waffles, and like to hang out and eat Love Waffles, Isabelle’s favorite. She also counts Belgium as her older sister.
Belgium and Haiti literally have no relations. They’re both influenced by French culture, but that’s about it. They could be acquaintances, but that doesn’t qualify as a strong friendship, let alone sister figures.
Matthias (Mathias) Køhler [Denmark]-
Isabelle counts Denmark as her “supreme bro”, for they are an awesome duo when drunk. She likes to go and visit him to have some beer, or to eat some Danish rings.
Must I repeat myself? The Danish and the Haitians have no relations at all. The Danish have an embassy in Haiti, so they would probably acknowledge each other’s presence at World Meetings and whatnot, but not much else. They barely have a reason to be acquaintances. There is no reason in the world for them to be drinking buddies.
Tino Väinämöinen [Finland]-
Isabelle acts like one heck of a spoiled brat when talking to Finland.
Because her birthday is the day after Christmas [December 26th],
No. In Haiti on December 26th, literally nothing happened. Haiti’s independence day is on January 1st, so that would make more sense.
she expects him to give her what she wants.
Why does this make me so mad? The only thing that Finland and Haiti have relations wise is trade deals, and the fact that after the earthquake in 2010, the Finnish donated a large sum of money to help with repairs.
This, of course, includes Christmas Eve, Christmas, her birthday, and the day after her birthday.
That is really spoiled. And should not even be a thing. Because as I said, the Nation of Haiti has seen suffering. She would not expect much for her birthday.
Finland’s kind-hearted nature finds this nothing but fulfilling a christmas/birthday wish.
Of course it does.
Lukas (Lucas) Bondevik [Norway]-
Isabelle loves Norway’s culture and language. She can’t help but to scream every time she sees him, in a good way, of course. At times, she tries to mimic his blank expressions, finding it hilarious.
No relations.
AGAIN.
Im Yong Soo [(South) Korea]-
Korea loves the fact that Isabelle loves him. She loves his language, culture, music, and dramas that he makes. She’s a big fan of his music, such as BigBang and 2NE1. She would go and visit him once in a while to watch dramas, eat some kimchi, or go karaoking. She also calls him “Oppa”, or brother/a name for a boyfriend; in this case, she uses “Oppa” in the term of a brother.
South Korea and Haiti have basic diplomatic relationships, so like I said with Denmark, barely a reason to be acquaintances, but enough to acknowledge each other at World Meeting and whatnot.
Matthew Williams [Canada]-
Also being a child of France, Canada and Isabelle share a bond between each other.
But France actually treated the Canadians decently.
Canada also gets surprised by the fact that she can see him; since nobody can. She and Canada meet each other on a daily basis: to talk about how to release their feelings, or to eat some pancakes. She also loves to hug Kumajirou, although she may hug him to the extent of choking him.
Miscellaneous
Isabelle’s last name “Carriedo-Bonnefoy” simply means the blood relation between Spain and France. *Although “Bonnefoy” is placed at the end because of the longer relationship*
I does make sense to some extent, but typically nations that were colonized by other nations in canon have their own last names. North Italy was part of the Habsburg Empire, but is his surname Edelstein? No. And South Italy was colonized by Spain, but his name is still Vargas, as is North Italy’s. Though Vargas is Spanish. Which still makes little sense to much of the APH fandom. And that’s my reasoning why her name should be Haitian.
She may be the poorest country in Hispaniola, but her beauty hides it.
While I won’t deny that Haitian women are beautiful, this is just a Mary Sue trait.
She’s a tsundere.
Tell me why. Tell me why this is so.
Okay, the OC isn’t awful, but it also isn’t the best it could possibly could be. It need work. A lot of it. And research. The OC disregards history on major regards, and her appearance is a bit funky. Some of her traits, such as her skin tone are accurate, as well as the supposed texture of her hair. The creator needs to change her clothing choices for both military and casual wear, as neither are accurate. It feels to me like the creator did a small amount of research, and then inserted them self, which irks me to no end.
Anyway, now I will exclaim my catchphrase.
Do your research, Hetalia fans!
See you guys later!
