I'd like to ask you what gender narratives you found most compelling in Homestuck!

genuinely i think June/John is one of the most competently & sophisticatedly written trans narratives i’ve ever read. this early line from Homestuck has stayed with me so much that i routinely think about it whilst lying in my bed staring at the ceiling trying to sleep

i think this paragraph has more to say about gender than the entirety of Bechdel’s combined works

it’s not a joke, it’s just subtle. a fundamental part of John’s character is that he is incredibly repressed and has a lot of conservative assumptions about the world without realising it due to his upbringing — the significance of this line is that it gives us a glimpse into how John (and his single father who he gets all his ideas about gender from) think about the world. It doesn’t matter that it is so warm that it’s uncomfortable and unpleasant to have a fire in the fireplace — the function of the fireplace is to have a fire in it, just because that’s what it’s for, personal comfort be damned. This is strikingly similar to John’s view of his own gender & sexuality, or rather, lack-thereof; he is a heterosexual boy because he is a heterosexual boy. A fireplace is supposed to have a fire. There is no second consideration; that’s all there is to say on the matter, regardless of how uncomfortable and unpleasant it is.
