Kitsune Tsuki
When they heard her speaking in Japanese, they were not so concerned. It was a longing for her past or something, they rationalized, and it was not hurting anyone. When they saw her reading a book in Chinese, the same could be said. It was only a sad – perhaps even pitiful – longing for an era long since passed. However, when they heard her speak in Russian, this sentiment quickly changed. As far as they knew, she was not familiar with the language in the way that she spoke it – as if she had lived in Russia her whole, immortal life. There was even an odd, unnatural intonation in her voice which was even more off-putting. Then, she started speaking Greek.
Something was definitely wrong.
No one was quite sure how to handle the situation, as when they attempted to speak with her, she would reply in a language they did not know. Worry began to manifest and grow in the hearts of her people. What was happening to Taiwan?
It only became worse from there. About a week into the strange behavior, she began switching languages more frequently. In fact, nearly every other word she spoke was in a different language. She would greet them in Japanese, ask how they were in Russian and English, alternating with each word, and then continue the conversation in this horrid combination of Greek and Latin.
Then came the outbursts, which were random, unpredictable, and quite frightening, to say the least. They were highly uncharacteristic of her, and they were akin to those of a mental patient. She would get hysterical over the smallest, most insignificant things, such as the temperature of the room. She had once cried and wailed for a full hour due to this reason alone.
The country was at a standstill and a complete loss. Every high-ranking official, including her president, met in secret and away from her to discuss her concerning behavior. That was when a pattern was found, and an odd, yet somehow convincing, theory was formed.
“Every time she greets us, it’s in Japanese. Do you think this has something to do with Japan?”
“I don’t know what it has to do with, but it isn’t natural. It’s… It’s supernatural.”
“You must be joking. There is no such thing as supernatural phenomena.”
“I don’t know, but I think getting Japan up here is worth a try.”
***
Japan had just settled into a nice warm bath. His beloved shiba inu, Pochi, was resting by the tub, nearly snoring at this point. Both of them jumped as his phone rang, frightening them out of their relaxed stupor. He had to be quick; this call must have been important – he could feel it somehow. He was right.
On the phone was Taiwan’s president, who explained the situation as calmly as she could. It was clear that she was panicking; her voice was tremulous and she would occasionally pause to think about what she was saying. Time was precious here, and she had to convey everything in the proper manner. The call ended with Japan agreeing to help, draining his bath, and boarding the next flight to Taipei.
Once there, Japan was led to the last place Taiwan had been seen. Luckily, she was still there, and she smiled brightly upon his approach. Japan’s Taiwanese escorts moved away, almost as if in fear of her, leaving him to continue his approach alone.
“Kon’nichiwa!” she said brightly. “Kak dela?”
Japan studied the features of her face. Once more delicate, they now appeared angular and animalistic somehow. She appeared almost catlike, or perhaps she appeared fox-like. Her teeth even seemed sharper than before, but perhaps he was imagining the small, triangular points in her mouth, some of which seemed to lightly graze her pastel lips. No, his – whatever it was – was real.
It was such an odd phenomenon, but a vaguely familiar one as well. He could faintly remember this happening frequently many centuries ago, but why was this? He then surmised that there must be something about it written within the old tomes of one of his libraries. With a promise to return, Japan flew back to his own country to do his research.
***
It took five and a half days of constant reading before he finally found something that matched. The description lined up with Taiwan’s odd behavior, but… weren’t these just myths? Myth or not, Japan decided that it would not hurt to attempt an exorcism of sorts. Boarding a flight to Taipei once more – this time with Pochi in tow – he set out to free his fellow nation.
The book said that they were called kitsune, and that they were mischievous fox spirits who sometimes possessed people. It never said anything about them possessing a national personification, but this was to be expected. They caused their hosts to understand other languages and act erratically, and they sometimes altered their physical appearance. The fox spirit took the form of a small lump on the host’s body which would move when they felt threatened. Kitsune apparently perfected to possess poor women, which Taiwan was not. Due to this small fact, Japan believed that this one was attempting to send a message.
The safest, most painless way to exorcise a kitsune was to introduce it to its natural fear: the dog. Japan’s loyal companion Pochi was perfect for this job. He might have been small, but he liked Taiwan quite a lot and was never stingy when it came to giving her little puppy kisses. This was the entirety of his plan, and if it failed, he would have to resort to more dangerous methods that he did not even want to consider. Often the other methods included attempting to physically harm the kitsune, which usually killed the host.
Taiwan’s reaction to Pochi was all Japan needed to confirm his suspensions and quell his skepticism. As the dog bounded forward innocently and happily, Taiwan pressed herself against the wall. She attempted to make herself appear as small as possible, hoping that the horrifying creature would not notice her. However, Pochi had already set his sights on her and was pattering forward to show her some doggy affection.
To her great dismay, Pochi began licking her everywhere he could reach; her face, her hands, even her shoes were not safe. Japan wondered if he could sense the foreign presence within her. He scarcely had time to ponder the thought, however, as the kitsune quickly released her, revealing itself to him.
It was a beautiful creature with golden fur and nine tails that flowed gently behind it. It stood like a human, dressed in a traditional white kimono adorned with cyan leaves and flower patterns.
“Get it away from me!” it shrieked in an ethereal female voice. “Get that thing away from me, please!”
He was not sure why, but Japan complied. He lifted the wiggling dog into his arms. Pochi gave a slight bark of protest, but did nothing more to indicate his dislike of his master’s decision.
“Why did you do this?” Japan asked gently, still uncertain of his own actions. He did not know why he was being so kind to the creature which had possessed his friend. Perhaps it was this odd sense of familiarity that continued to haunt him.
“I just wanted to speak to you,” the kitsune answered, voice still slightly tremulous, “but you could never see me when I appeared to you alone. There used to be a time when you could see me; you could see me and many other yokai. We lived among your people for many years. However, as generations passed, the humans began to forget about us. They stopped believing in us, and, in turn, so did you.”
Japan closed his eyes. Was this true? His memories of such things seemed so fuzzy, but her words slowly brought them back to him. Kappas, noperra-bõ, otoroshi, komainu, zashiki-warashi… All of these creatures used to call his land their home, and while not all of them were friendly, many of them simply coexisted peacefully with his people.
There was so much he wanted to tell the kitsune. He wanted to thank it for opening his eyes again, for not harming Taiwan, for speaking to it. He wanted to ask if he had been friends with it in the distant, foggy past. However, all he could manage was two words.
“I’m sorry.”
“I am, too,” the kitsune said calmly. “I just did not want to remain forgotten. Please… Please remember us. Please don’t forget us again.”
“I do,” Japan said with a nod, “and I won’t.”
The kitsune bowed respectfully as a brilliant golden light surrounded it. “Arigato.” With this simple word which reverberated around the room, the otherworldly being vanished, leaving Japan and Pochi alone with Taiwan.
Taiwan stood slowly and looked around, eyes falling on Japan. A small smile crossed her lips and she approached. “It was so strange,” she said after a moment. “It was like I could hear and see everything, but nothing else…”
Japan nodded, matching her smile with a smaller, tired smile of his own. “It is over now,” he said softly. Though it was truly over, Japan had vowed never to forget the incident or the yokai, and he knew that he would not.
“I should thank you for this,” Taiwan went on. “Come on, I’ll buy you a drink or two.”
“There is no need for that,” Japan stated, studying her delicate features. It seemed that no damage was done at all and she was truly herself once again.
“I insist,” she said simply. Then, in one swift motion, she moved forward and planted a small kiss on his cheek. After this she turned away, walking out of the room in hopes that he would follow… and he did.

Prince Ivan stood in his room as he thought about what else he needed to pack. He felt pretty sure he had everything, but maybe…
Princess Natalya opened the door and walked in. “All ready?”
“I think so,” he said. “Is my horse ready?”
“Lovino is getting it ready now. He’s joining you.”
Ivan lowered the shirt he’d been considering and looked at Natalya. “Lovino is going? I told you I could do this alone.”
“I know that, and I don’t doubt you, it’s just…,” she sighed and looked away. “The forest can be dangerous, and you’re the heir. If something were to happen to you, something would happen to the kingdom. And I’d miss you.”
Ivan put the shirt down. He clipped his sword and scabbard around his waist. “I’ve traveled that way plenty of times alone. I’ll be fine.”
Natalya eyed the decorated sword. She looked worried. “Please don’t tell me you won’t need to use that.”
“Well-”
She started giggling. “I’m kidding. I know you know how to use that, I know you can take care of yourself. Lovino is being sent just for field experience, he’s hopeless. Just be safe, okay?”
Ivan looked at her, somewhat wary at the sudden change in demeanor, but nodded anyway. It’d be fine.

It’s the sixth day of what will later be called year 0 when Estonia sees Finland off on one of the last flights to leave Tallinn, hugging him hard in the hall of the nearly abandoned airport. Every tourist has been sent home, wherever possible, with several countries having closed their borders. Both Finland’s and Estonia’s governments have plans in that direction, although they’re waiting to see what Sweden and Russia will do.
It has been chaos, these past days. Not just in their corner of Europe, but all over the world, people are getting ill.
They’ve both been through pandemics, but it seems worse now that the lines of communication are so short. Spain sends updates on the original eleven patients, who are in his country, daily. They’re not bettering.

“C’mon this will be fun!” Gilbert motioned for his younger brother to follow him as he held various items in his hands. He had a wide grin on his face as he pushed the door to his room open. As soon as he was there he dropped the items on his bed.
Ludwig reluctantly followed after him, he did not want to participate in this at all, but he was somewhat curious of what would happen, it wasn’t like he had anything better to do anyway. He opened the book on the page Gilbert had marked with a post-it. “At least we should follow it properly, I don’t want to get in trouble.” Of course this was odd. Did he expect not to get in trouble when he followed a demon summoning perfectly? Maybe it would be better if he just did it wrong on purpose, so that devil would not show up. Maybe it would result in the devil getting angry, that would definitely be worse. He sighed. The best would just be to not summon the devil, but it would be impossible to make Gilbert change his mind.
“Yea, yea sure Lud, now wrap this around yourself,” he said and he tossed him his old bed sheets, black with thin white stripes. He himself wrapped himself in a black blanket as well.
The other looked at it sceptical. “It says here to use robes, I don’t think sheets will work, maybe he will be mad or something and pierce us with his trident or something.” He put it around himself nevertheless and watched Gilbert make a salt circle on the floor. “It’ll be fine, little bro! He is cool with a lot of stuff so surely he’s cool with sheets too.”
Gilbert really was a lot more confident in this all than Ludwig was. The youngest was only here because he was curious what would happen, but the longer he was here the more he wished to leave. He glanced at the door and wanted to leave. He was about to stand up from the bed and walk over when his brother called out to him.
“Hand me those matches there, will you,” he asked him. The albino was holding one of three black candles. Or well, they used to be green, but a quick painting job had changed that. “Once we light these on, it’s time for the ritual, do you want to say it or should I?”
He tried to light a match, but he failed. He tried it another few times but it constantly got out before he could light the match, or the head broke off. Eventually Ludwig got enough of it and grissed the package from his brother’s hand. It took him two matches before all candles were on fire.
Gilbert grinned and rubbed his hand together. “Thanks bro! Well all preparations are done! We can get on to the real ritual now!” He held out an umbrella to Ludwig, who pushed it away.
“I’m not gonna do this ritual! It’s your idea.” The younger boy stepped away from the salt circle and the burning candles. His skin was tingling and he started to really really dislike this. He didn’t particularly believe in satan or god, but he did not like the idea of unnecessarily messing with them. He was about to walk over to the door when Gilbert had began chanting. He knew better than to leave now. After all, the one thing worse than a successful summoning of Satan, and that was an interrupted one.
Gilbert was walking around the salt circle in the middle of the room, making sure not to step on the candles around it. “Oh hear the Infernal Names of: Abaddon, Kali, Sekhmet, and Dagon.” He then took a sip from a cup he held in his left hand. He wasn’t sure what he was supposed to put in his ‘chalice’, but it had some coke in it. He hoped the devil liked that. He then pointed his umbrella, or cane as it was actually supposed to be, to every quarter. “Lucifer from the north, Lucifer from the West, Belial from the South, and Leviathan from the East.”
When he was done he looked back at Ludwig and the items in their room. “And? Did it work? Did you see something happen?” he asked, maybe a little too excited for someone summoning the devil. He hadn’t even thought about what to ask him yet!
Ludwig shook his head. “Nothing happened,” he said, his brows were furrowed as he glanced around the room for any change. His shoulders dropped in relieve when it seemed that was not the case.
Gilbert pouted. “That sucks, and I was hoping this would work. I wanted to ask him so many cool things.” He sighed and let the sheets drop from his shoulders. “We should probably clean this up before mum comes home.”
“I’ll get the vacuum cleaner, you should put those sheets away,” Ludwig instructed and together the two boys left the room, neither of them looking back.
Unbeknownst to them, a thick, foggy layer of black smoke began forming in the room, and soon it turned into a human shape.

“Ready?” Feliks asks after handing his ticket to the collector. Feliciano nods and grabs his hand. He’s bouncing on his toes, both from excitement and a little bit of nervousness.
They walk through the first doorway, then through a second. The room they enter is too dark to see anything clearly, and almost as soon as they’re inside, the door shuts and everything is pitch black. Feliks feels Feliciano squeezing his hand even tighter and he gives a light squeeze back.
Lights turn on, one by one, until the entire room is bathed in a warm, almost welcoming glow. The room isn’t welcoming, though. The walls have been torn into, chips of plaster hanging from gashes that can’t have been made by a human. The coffee table is turned on its side and stuffing spills from tears in the couch. There’s a photo on the wall and Feliciano yelps when he realizes it is staring right back at him.
“Feliks! Feliks that picture has eyes!”
Feliks looks up and furrows his brow. “Yeah, all pictures have eyes. I think what you should be scared of is the guy’s beard. He totally needs a trim,” he replies, giving a little snort of laughter. Feliciano tries to laugh as well, but it comes out nervous. He still feels like the picture is looking right at him, following his every move. It’s unnerving to say the least.
“Come on, I wanna see the next room!” Feliks says. He tugs on Feliciano’s hand and the Italian reluctantly follows, glancing back at the photo every few seconds until he can’t see it anymore. The next room is a kitchen, and Feliciano’s eyes are immediately drawn to a bloodied body laying across the countertop. It’s shrouded in smoke, making it even more eerie, and he clings even closer to Feliks.
The body rises up slowly, causing blood to cascade down the counter, leaving shining puddles on the floor. This time, Feliciano feels Feliks stiffen next to him, almost as though he’s scared as well, before he suddenly relaxes, a smug look on his face. “That’s not blood. It’s raspberry syrup. We use the exact same type at work to make halloween drinks.”
Feliciano nods, but this doesn’t reassure him much. The person’s feet have hit the ground and they’re slowly shuffling towards them. He steps back a little, and the person looks up, a hood falling away to reveal their face. Where their eyes should be are two pitch black holes, dripping with blood. Feliciano stumbles to the side until he’s pressed against Feliks, and lets out a shriek.
“Oh my god, Feliciano, it’s just raspberry syrup, there’s nothing scary about it,” Feliks says, though his voice is also shaking a little, and he involuntarily holds tighter to his hand. Even though he knows it’s fake, he has to admit that the bloody-ghost-person is a little scary. Not that he’d admit that to anyone other than himself.
The bloodied person stops a few feet away from them and hangs their head and arms, like a puppet whose strings have been dropped. Feliks waits for a few seconds before deciding he’s done with that room and pulling Feliciano along with him to the next one.
As soon as they walk in, something starts rattling against the windows, and one of them starts to crack. By now, Feliciano is clinging to Feliks’s entire arm. The crack on the window spreads as it is pounded against a second time, before the glass shatters to pieces and someone walks in, holding up an axe. There’s a wild smile on their face, and it spreads all the way to their eyes at the sight of the two people in front of them. The person with the axe stomps towards them, every step causing the windows to rattle, until Feliks and Feliciano start backing away. Then, they let out a loud laugh that could only be described as evil, and started walking faster. It wasn’t long before Feliciano began running, Feliks following because their hands were intertwined and he didn’t have much choice.
The person chases them out of the room and up a flight of stairs. Eventually the pair escapes, running into what looks like a bedroom. They stop when they realize they’re no longer being followed, and Feliks leans against a broken-down wardrobe to catch his breath.
“Did that scare you? Because it scared me! I thought I was going to die for a second there!” Feliciano lets out a nervous laugh, his voice much higher-pitched than normal.
Feliks crosses his arms over his chest and shakes his head. “No, that wasn’t scary. In fact, I kind of want to hire that guy to chase me on the treadmill at the gym, it would be good motiva-”
He’s cut off by the wardrobe bursting open. Someone in a ski mask, holding a chainsaw, jumps out, and without even realizing he’s doing it, Feliks screams. He runs to Feliciano, hugging him tightly and pulling him backwards away from the person with the chainsaw.
The chainsaw turns on, making an earsplitting noise as it’s revved up. This time it’s Feliks who pulls Feliciano along with him, and they run at lightning speed down the hall, into another room that looks relatively safe. When they stop this time, Feliciano pulls Feliks close and gives him a hug almost immediately. “You can let me know if you’re scared, you know that, right?” Feliciano asks. He’s concerned now, because he doesn’t think he’s ever seen Feliks get so scared.
Feliks doesn’t respond immediately. He pulls away from the hug after a few seconds, and grabs Feliciano’s hands, a smile on his face. “That was so much fun!” he replies, squeezing his hands for a moment. At first, Feliciano is confused, before he understands what he means and smiles as well.
“Yeah! That was really fun!”
