Hi I’m having a lot of thoughts about Whitepine ep 10 so pardon me while I yap for a moment and please forgive me if I make literally zero sense. English is difficult.

The answer we got in today’s episode was unsatisfying, yes. I saw two or three comments saying just that, that it’s a bummer of a reveal, that it’s a disappointing end to such a big cliffhanger. But I got to thinking, and I wanted to write it down because I’m just weird like that.

Death isn’t satisfying. Murder isn’t satisfying. I think Whitepine is incredibly well grounded in its realism, especially the realism for the time period it’s set in, and yes a lot of us have seen the series partially as a murder mystery but that was never really the point, was it? We were never going to get a satisfying ending to this tragedy. There was never a guarantee that it would all be tied up in a neat little bow, as fun as it was to analyze and make our theories and headcanons and sus people out. Because nothing about Mysticat’s death was satisfying, so why would be the answer to the mystery be any different?

Random people kill other random people all the time. It is a horrific, awful tragedy that happens far more often than it should, but it does happen. It’s a lot rarer for there to be some sort of big conspiracy behind it, some cataclysmic reason for a human being to take another human being’s life. Most of the time it just HAPPENS, and I think it is incredibly likely that this is what Whitepine has done. It’s a period piece, it’s a critique on misogyny and the rich and the system and literally whatever else you can find in it for yourself. It never promised a clean answer to the terrible crime it showed us.

Now, could this all be a red herring? Absolutely! Whitepine is a masterful story and Ivory is excellent in her telling of it, we are never given all of the answers straight-up, that’s part of the fun! Do I think there could be a big twist later down the line, an “AHA it was THEM all along!” moment? Definitely. But I also think there’s at least a decent chance that this is the only answer we’re getting, because maybe it IS the answer. That a random man decided to murder a random woman on a random night because he decided that she deserved it.

It's done!!! Finally!!!

Two months in the making and it's finally out of my head - Huge relief, I hope you all enjoy it :) Tried a lot of new things, so it was a good learning experience.
