Design for the project : Jack and Jill

[Part 2]

Props(The design of the space ship):

In addition to the character I wanted to design a spaceship where the main characters leave the planet at the end, and before I came up with the design I thought that paper aeroplanes look pretty futuristic.

I asked my tutor to make a paper aeroplane for me. Then I took a piece of paper and repeated the same way the tutor made paper aeroplanes and glued two small versions of the aeroplanes on the back and the front.

I then used the 3d model as a reference for the design. I really like how the ship turned out sharp and emphasises its unusual triangular shaped aircraft parts.

I found this experience working for the project very fun and rewarding, there were loads of opportunities to learn new things.

Design for the project : Jack and Jill

[Part 1]

Location:

For the project, I created a location design from two storyboard frames. The first one is a rusty desert planet and the desert itself. All the inspiration I took from the animation Invisible.

Character Design:

The most interesting and most exciting part of the process is creating the character. In the team we agreed that we would split into two people, two people would design Jill and the other two participants would design Jack. At the end there will be a vote on whose design will be the final one. And so I designed Jack, I was inspired by old cowboy toys and their style so I tried to combine those toys and the style of Invisible.

For the project, I still had to make a small version of the magazine that says everything about animation.

I decided to make a little collage about the design of our project. The first spread is about storyboard and locations where everything happens

The second spread is about character design, I was doing Jack's design and decided to put in his and everything that inspired me to design him.

And the last pages are refoins and more things that inspired and were used for the aesthetics of the project.

Thursday and Friday 18th-19th March:

These days I was the group leader and we were asked to find relevant research for our project. We each were given a component to focus on, I was looking at character design/fashion, Naomi was looking at landscapes and backgrounds, hlib was creating the animatic for our group from our storyboard and aoife was looking at prop design.

We then had to hang up all of our images on the wall in the hallway.

We then had to decide on an animation style we wanted to use for this project, we settled on the invincible style, I then made a mood board to help us forward. This is composed of character designs, background, colour schemes and some prop examples.

We then did two scenes of our storyboard each to be more refined and coloured in and in the style we chose.

On Friday we started creating character designs, we split the idea by two people doing one character and the other two the other character. This is my line drawing for my design of jack so far.

Research Gathering and Mood board creation and choosing the Style for Animation piece and Drawing an Interpretation of the Storyboard

Research Gathering:

Me and My Group Gathered all our research from aesthetics ,background,props, character Design Research, technology. We printed and stuck up all our research on the wall with Masking tape. We gathered this information to get ideas on how to create our world in the story we made from informed research to know what are world would look like realistically and so we would have all the Research in One place .We did by looking at images Online and in books to get references to what the story could look like

One of the people in my group made a mood board on digital programme. this was created to use as a reference for the colour palette for our future Animated piece.

Choosing an Animation Style:

We individually researched an Animation Style we liked and voted which style we liked the most to use for our story. We did this so we could decide on which to use an animation style appropriate to the story. We decided as a group TV show invincible animation style .

Jack and Jill. Group project

After the storyboard was ready, everyone had to draw two frames from it. Preferably repeating the style and aesthetics of the animation that was chosen. We collectively chose Invisible

I drew the first two frames from the storyboard, the solution was to draw everything digitally. Invisible's animation style, the backgrounds are very ditalised. You can compare it to Disney animations where you can see what will move and what won't, and the same was done in Invisible.

Storyboard

The next stage was to make a storyboard, I had time to make my version on the computer, but I redid some scenes on paper. All the scenes were drawn according to the script

After everyone finished working on their storyboards we started putting them together. Everyone got one frame at a time and that's how we got the final total.We tried to balance getting everyone's drawing into the storyboard and animatic.

At the end of the day, all of the storyboard work was merged into the animatic. A couple of transitions were added to the animatic so that they were not so sharp. And the editing itself was not something difficult.

Animation Week 8th April to 12th April

Part №1

On the first day we played such a game even we had to draw a separate character without seeing the previous one. It turned out such funny characters, then, at will it was possible to take one of such characters and to draw it. Here is such a fashion monster I got

The church then had the task of drawing poses while the other part of the group played with the figures.

On Tuesday we went to a big park to draw animals from life, it was fun very interesting experience, I will definitely go there myself to draw animals

Animation Week 8th April to 12th April

Part №2

Thursday the project started, we were put into groups of 4 and given nursery rhymes, where the story takes place and an aesthetic in which to remake the story.

My group got Jake and Jill, western, futuristic 2100+.

That's all the developments so far, there's a couple of pieces here of what I imagine the characters look like. Cyborg Jack and cowgirl Jill.

Project: Mini-me

Part ³

The following week we had to draw sketches of buildings and streetscape in the city centre. I didn't do a lot of sketches, but I got some done

For the large format I chose this sketch and photo( I didn't notice but the photo was taken from a different angle)

It's messy on the large format. I didn't really know what I was doing and just tried to use black pastel and charcoal for the tone. Because of the references I had to draw with pencils but that would have taken forever so pastel and charcoal was the only solution. This background will be used in the final animation.

Mouth animation

Using the reference on the right I made a mouth animation for the phrase "Good morning". And then photographed all the objects for animation.

In the end, this is how the animation turned out. For animation I used: Photoshop, Adobe Animate and Adobe Premiere Pro.

Project: Mini-me

Part ²

Making a Mini myself is the next step. I drew a little drawing of myself in the format of a children's book. I immediately decided to create a paper model.

I don't want to post my face here, but I've been comparing it to my view from the mirror to accurately portray my facial features and and character

Using a cardboard box, the core of a roll of paper I made a support for the head. Then using scotch tape and paper mesh I made the head itself. It turned out pretty good. I tried to make the head as flat as possible so that the paper would lay on it properly.

Then I took the paper and started to drive a soft pencil over it creating a sketch effect. The next step is cut it with a guillotine to make the hair smooth and thin, otherwise it wouldn't be curly at the end of it. The glasses were made from wire, and I decided to make the nose a simple shape to fit the style of my head completely.

The latter consist of clothing. To make the garments appear three-dimensional, I drew each component independently. In particular, the hood came out well; all I had to do was cut two sheets of paper, concealment, and glue them to the back of the neck. And the outcome pleased me in the end.

Project : Mini-me

Part ¹

Choosing a children's book, comic book, or graphic novel to serve as inspiration for the setting and three-dimensional character was the first task assigned on the first day of animation instruction.

I was not able to find a suitable book in the Limrik library. But my classmate showed and lent the book to Eric. Illustrations by Shane Tan

I liked the pencil technique in his illustration. And in technique it would be easier to execute

The next day we had to draw a landscape from a people's park for the background of the animation. The first picture is a colour sketch and the second is an unfinished full work.

(Part 2)

Book

The last thing left to do is design the little book. First I made a prototype, I drew roughly how I see my little book. After which I proceeded to illustrate in pages.

When I created illustrations and added text, I tried to make the viewer's eyes move forward on the page. I hope I was able to make the design dynamic. All inspiration is drawn from reserches, artists I met while working on the project.

Graphic Design

(Part1)

In the last week of the project, I went to a graphic design workshop.

Mood board

I needed to gather my inspiration and feeling before beginning the job. I began by drawing two moodboards: one with the word pulse associated with it, and the other with the word calmness. Eventually, I went with calm. It's not necessary for the movement to be precise; calm can be conveyed through images. I made this board with that purpose in mind.

A simple illustration

I was instructed to create a design using basic shapes, but since waves and fish are the focus of my design, I went with simple lines. I experimented a little bit with ilustrator and came up with this.

Research

Jack McLaren • 1970

Jack frequently uses lively colors, angular lines, and flowing brushstrokes to highlight dynamic movement in his artwork. His dynamic compositions draw the spectator in and elicit a sense of motion and rhythm from the observer. Whether he is painting abstract shapes or natural landscapes, Jack's art captivates the viewer with a sense of movement that produces a vibrant visual experience. Those what I want to make in my current project artworks.
