Desert Hearts (1985)
finally got around to watching this film. to me, the script felt very reminiscent of a Katherine V. Forrest novel, tentative and quick to ignite all at the same time.
it’s not every day that you see a story like theirs in a western setting, let alone in the 50s in said western setting. i will say, in terms of the time period that the film was set in, it reminded me a lot of dirty dancing, where the attitude and looks were giving 80s but it was actually the 50s.
more often than not lesbian films like to add elements of unconventionality into the plot, almost to dwarf the act of lesbianism by saying, hey, this other thing (in the case of Desert Hearts, divorce) is also going on when it’s really not supposed to be!
i really enjoyed the film, though. it was borderline revolutionary for its time. patricia charbonneau was spectacular in it, wish i got to see her in more riveting roles after this but i’m pretty sure this movie got her a little bit blacklisted!
