Funny to say, I never posted my take on this famous illustration here on Tumblr (And is like one of the first things I drawn abt Transformers). So I thought it was a good moment to remember that I am gay as fuck a proud member and ally of LGBTQ+ community (I would have been strange otherwise). Also, a small thanks to TF community that is canonically and fandomically very queer and welcoming (ofc exception are anywhere but still one of the nicest and most comfortable community I'd ever been). Also, yesterday was 2 june, is the Festa della Repubblica in Italy. The day commemorates the 1946 Italian institutional referendum held by universal suffrage, in which the Italian people were called to the polls to decide on the form of government following the Second World War and the fall of Fascism.

So, very important celebration ( often quite ignored one since fascist wind in this country but still...)

I think Resurrection's biggest issue really is that New Blood is a deconstruction of the original premise. The original show tells us that Dexter is a psychopath and Harry was helping him by training him to be a good serial killer rather than a bad serial killer. Brain represents what Dexter would be without Harry. Harry saved Dexter from a worse fate.

Now the original show starts to question this premise. Starts to ask the question what if Harry was wrong? What if Dexter wasn't destined to be a serial killer? What if Dexter could have had a normal life if he just got appropriate help for his severe childhood trauma? But it never really answers these questions. It asks the audience to make them think but it doesn't commit to an answer.

New Blood then comes along and says what Harry did to Dexter was child abuse. Then it explores this explicitly through Dexter's abusive relationship with Harrison. It explicitly shows Dexter grooming Harrison.

Resurrection then sort of fumbles into well umm what if Dexter likes killing and what if it's good actually and well umm he apologised for the child abuse and umm look here is a serial killer club.

Don't get me wrong Resurrection is fun. And it doesn't completely abandon the child abuse storyline. We still see how negatively effected Harrison is by Dexter's abuse. But it wants to continue the story as if it didn't deconstruct it. Which makes Dexter look like he learnt nothing.

I feel like dexter being an abuse victim and him liking murder go hand in hand cause he likes murder AS A RESULT of said abuse and grooming, it’s been established since the og show that dexter does like killing, however what it tries to question is whether or not he was always meant to be that way, or if it was Harry’s training that made him become what he was and if it could’ve been prevented, still it doesn’t take away the fact that he likes killing people and that is part of what makes him so messed up.

also rather than saying said abuse it’s good cause killing bad people it’s good I feel like it’s more of a mixture of resignation to never being truly able to change (I feel like in resurrection dexter just resigned to his “fate” of always being a monster-that-hunts-monsters and decided to make the most of it) and also the fact that while it’s bad that he was groomed into becoming a serial killer that kills criminals, to many people (not everyone, and it’s up to the viewer whether or not they agree) it’s gonna be seen as GOOD that he kills due to the nature of his victims regardless of the abuse or how he became what he became.

The serial killer club is a volatile concept that could’ve been executed better, they could’ve done far more with it and would’ve been interesting if done well but because all dexter villains are seasonal of course they had to take the convenient hype moments and aura route, wished dexter had been more challenged by the other serial killers than what he was.

As for Harrison and dexter I really can’t say anything that hasn’t been said before, initially I was kinda optimistic that they hadn’t forgotten completely about dexter’s abuse and had him acknowledge that he did that to Harrison and that it messed him up horribly enough to end up killing another person. I hoped we’d see them have their ups and downs as they rebuild their relationship cause healing isn’t lineal but of course the fucking 4 year timeskip had to happen so… yeah no I still think that was one of the worst decisions they could’ve taken for this season, it’d take a miracle for it to work out

Overall I think certain writing decisions in resurrection don’t exactly contradict or ignore what had already been established before, but it’s true that it feels like they are prioritizing “hype moments and aura” and the spectacle of dexter in general over consistent and/or thoughtful writing which ends up taking away the weight of it’s themes and concepts and instead leaves a confusing mess that wants to address the elephant in the room but is too scared to do so

Going off into not so far future where dexter recognizes brian at the diner and they somewhat try to reconnect,

Brian would be so jealous of not only the Morgan’s for obvious reasons but also people like angel and masuka who seemingly were able to hit it off with his baby brother while he struggles to have a single conversation with him without dexter looking ready to bolt and he doesn’t get why

Meanwhile dexter tries to spend as much time possible away from ANY of his family on purpose (the memories are just too painful and he knows that they’d probably be able to clock that something’s off with him if he stayed around too long) so he goes out with the guys whenever he can cause like, either way it’s what Harry and deb always wanted right? To socialize and make friends? To stop acting so weird and awkward? To stop always relying on his family when it came to social interactions because he was too much of a monster, of a freak to even be able to establish a human connection with someone else?

Harry tries to tell himself that dexter’s odd behaviour is just him trying to build a reputation and blend in (he always comes to him and tells him him everything, so he shouldn’t worry much, right?)

deb is happy that his brother is finally making friends but can’t help that something is amiss (why does it feel like he’s avoiding her?)

And dexter is just a MESS, he doesn’t want to screw up the second chance he’s been given but he doesn’t even know where to begin or what to fix or if he can even fix anything at all, his father’s death? His fault for killing in front of him, so… don’t do that, deb’s miserable life and death? His fault for killing but also for NOT killing, Brian’s death? He LITERALLY killed him, but if he doesn’t he might go after his sister again or even Harry, what about doakes? Laguerta? Rita? Harrison?

What if he gets caught again? What if they find out? Should he stop killing altogether again? No, he already tried that and it didn’t work out, be more careful? Kill less? What about all the criminals that’s roam free? How many more would die if he didn’t kill them when he did? What should he do?? WHAT CAN HE DO???

Angel and masuka think he’s awkward but neat :D

wait im not crazy for thinking most of dexter fandom (especially men) think rita is best dexter's gf because she is the perfect female model for the patriarchal system (practically no development, she just remains a sweet and supportive girl who cooks for the family, takes care of the children, obidient due to trauma her husband left)

i mean, they don't even see her as an individual human being, just another part of dexter's character

and before you jump on me, I adore rita and she is also one of my favorite ship with dex.

The ONLY way they’d ever get me to even CONSIDER forgiving them for the 4 year timeskip is if we get ghost!Angel and it’s well executed and not just for the cameo or hype moments and it affects dexter’s character in a meaningful way.
