like many others joining this group, it has been ages since i've roleplayed on tumblr (or at all really) which may or may not be why i entirely forgot to do this part of my intro ;-; but hello everyone! i'm silas, 27, she/they, in gmt-5/est and it's very nice to meet you all! my sleep schedule is a mess and i am a yappaholic and i'm so sorry <3 enough about me though, i'm really happy to introduce my awkward turtle yet best girl dao! i have some bullet points below about her as well as some brief plot ideas to supplement the ones on my plot page! it has been a pleasure getting to know you and your muses so far and i'm super excited about what shape the rp takes! <3
venita kaykam, 1997, nonthaburi, thailand. born with powers bestowed upon her by not only the moon, but a lineage full of magic.
a planned conception by a bonded witch and familiar, dao recieved her nickname from the very moment her abilities began to present themselves. spots of light filtering through her irises as she was rocked in her bassinet reminded her parents of starlight.
loved following her parents around as a toddler. seeing her father fly across the river in jovial circles in his flying fox form would always send her into fits of giggles, while her mother's fixation on herbalism when it came to cooking and healing was one of her favorite things to emulate.
really happy family from the outside looking in, and even from dao's position looking up to her parents. they were her everything. they would always protect her, always be there for her. right?
she should have sensed something was amiss when her mother would never reveal her own unique ability as a witch. she'd go on and on about dao's ocular light generation, gushing about how proud she was that she'd learn to utilize it so quickly, yet even when prodded by friends, loved ones and even her own daughter, she remained silent on the matter. it almost seemed like she was ashamed.
2004. dao is soon to be seven years old as the summer sun is already soaking thailand's coast. her maternal grandfather, a binturong familiar, had started visiting far more often than usual. it seemed strange even to a mannerly dao, who'd quickly learned not to ask questions to avoid ruffling feathers. but he'd always take her out to do fun things, so distractions were a given. cryptic words that she didn't entirely understand would meet some of her more direct questions, giving her some inkling that her home life was not as idyllic as her imaginative mind would have her believe.
perhaps that's what made it so painful when she came home from school one day to see her grandfather in hysterics while her father spat anger about blood magic. when they noticed her there, she was sent immediately to her room with little explanation. all she knew was that her mother was gone and she probably wasn't coming back. it was so much to conceptualize at her age, especially when her father wouldn't give her a straight answer.
the tonal shift in her home caused dao to throw herself into school; even being teased by other students as the only witch in her class was better than the icy atmosphere the loss of her mother left behind. despite her father's insistence that she leave magic by the wayside entirely, she still practiced whenever she could, usually in solitude to spare her father's feelings. she continued pouring over her mother's herbal grimoires, learning the safe application of many plants found around the world.
even as she was preparing to head off into the next phase of her education, she would solely consider furthering her herbal knowledge with an herbal sciences degree in south korea. there was something so...inviting about the country, especially the area where she'd arranged housing. it was like she was fated to the area in some, yet another facet of her existence she couldn't explain.
as clueless as she was before setting off into the world, her father's ominous parting words did give her some indication that her mother's story may not be over just yet.
after gaining her degree, she felt more confident in her herbalism skills than ever. her potion crafting had come on leaps and bounds with little infusions of magic here and there. she was able to launch an online business selling potions of all types; luck, healing, sleep, protection, vitality -- though she adamantly refused any requests for love potions as she felt it was highly unethical. she's like dom toretto, she lives by a code~
found the boarding school through some friends and is currently in her second year of studies! genuinely couldn't be happier to be getting a dedicated magic education and just being around people where she feels like she can be herself. hasn't met her familiar yet in canon, but knows she is definitely in the right place.
personality. dao is a very deferential girly, respect and hierarchy are very important to her, though she doesn't perceive ceremonial slights against her as much as she overthinks any mistaken ones she makes toward others. she's v v kind and considerate of how she speaks to people and her ethical code can actually be a little overbearing but she always means well <3 all her potion ingredients are gathered, prepared and dried with care (that's, uhhhh, totally not the english slogan for her online apothecary service >.>) and it's quite important to her that she source everything responsibly and legally. while she's often working alone due to being hyper-focused, she loves company and talking to people and being a light source for them if they ever need it!
some more plot ideas!!
her familiar/roommate?? can coincide with the 'swallow me whole with the moon on my back' plot listed here, but can also be organically brainstormed between muses ^~^
moon witch friend group pls!!
a familiar who gets very mischievous in their animal form and is constantly trolling dao while she tries to pick potion ingredients
people she met and stayed friends with when she first came to south korea or met at some point while she was there (since around 2016-2017)
someone who often tags along on her trips into the city to get shipping materials and other errands
you committed the grave sin of using dao's cauldron and not cleaning it afterward, rip
another unbonded witch or familiar with whom dao often discusses what getting to the end of that red string must be like
general study buddies/fellow insomniacs
you live across the hall from dao and you are really tired of those weird 3am smells coming from her cauldron
a dark magic user that dao is both terrified of and enthralled by
someone with the audacity to call her venita instead of dao
