don't know much about networking, but @andmaybegayer posted a bunch about privacy software earlier - they might have a good read

ProtonVPN is reliable, they also run ProtonMail, a well regarded secure email service, RiseUp has a good team, what infrastructure of theirs I have used is sound. As for their VPN, I've never used it but it'll definitely bypass censorship, it wouldn't be my first choice for secure communications without adding TOR on top, and I'm not familiar with Calyx.
