Have been rewatching S3, and this scene really warms my heart in some ways.
This scene, Alec awkwardly tried to explain why he had t leave early, but actually very cute I think. Maybe Ellie and their coworkers thought so too. These people are police, and they have known Hardy for years. It wouldn’t be so hard to guess what their boss would do, especially when he was awkward like this.
And look at the smile they shared! It wasn't mocking, instead, this smile felt kind and genuine and they were really happy for him, like 'Awww, our grumpy boss finally has some personal life except work! He's definitely going to see someone!'
Coworkers know what kind of person Alec Hardy really is now after all those things. His gruff exterior is a suit of armor that shields the heart of one of the most gentle, decent men. His temper is still awful during a horrible case, and he is still insociable and grouchy as always, but they do respect him now, and tbh, like him. He might not realise but his coworkers care about him. They might still call Alec Hardy 'shitface' sometimes, but I don't think this name now is as bad as it was in S1, or say, those time Alec just started working with them. More like something only they can say, and they will NOT allow anyone else to use this or anything to insult their boss.
Alec Hardy isn't an outsider anymore, he's one of them, part of this town now. (well, guess how long it will take him to notice this? Someone really should remind him, guess that person will be Daisy or Ellie)

Broadchurch ramble 3
So, I've been thinking, the friendship(or maybe more?) between Daisy and Chloe is soooooo cuteeeeee!! But sadly, we didn't get enough in the show...
And tbh I also believe Alec, Ellie and Beth are sharing some bonds as well (not just the single parent thing ofc).
Look at them in S3, especially between Beth and Alec, they were clearly not strangers to each other like they used to be in S1. Maybe not that close yet, like Ellie with Beth or Ellie with Alec, but there's a good chance they will become great friends and even family. Not only because their daughters' relationship, but also their own similarities. They had both experienced painful losses and long periods of darkness and pain. But all of these horrors made them stronger, they're always fighters and they never give in. Surely the better they get to know each other, the more they will respect each other, they just need some time.
In my Broadchurch headcanon, Hardys, Millers and Latimers will become a family. Family of choice. They understand each other, respect each other and ofc, love each other. Also have some domestic routines, like Alec babysits boys when others go out for a girls night, Daisy asks Ellie and Beth for help with some girl stuff like shopping advice, Tom asks Alec to teach him how to shave...They won't hesitate to help each other, or even, defend for/protect others when needed.
They've been through so much shit, all of them. So yeah, let's give them sooo much love they really deserve, but didn't get in the show.
We need domestic fluff and comfort.
Broadchurch ramble 2
Sometimes I wonder whether BLOODY Tess ever told Daisy the truth about Sandbrook, about HER cheating, the evidence SHE lost, the family SHE destroyed. Instead of Alec Hardy.
And I don’t think she did. She prefers to selfishly keep the truth hidden forever. Or she will lose Daisy for good, at least I believe so. Because look at S3, there’s something missing between Alec and Daisy. Yes, maybe it’s due to their long time apart, they need to warm up and adjust to each other, and Alec was busy. But still, their relationship didn’t seem to get any better compared to S2, still distant (Daisy), awkward and cautious (Alec) until S3E8.
And tbh I really don’t think Daisy would be willing to go back to Tess after knowing the truth. She gave up Alec so easily that she didn’t even want to give her dad a chance to do something. It REALLY broke my heart to see this…how would Alec feel…
There’re so many things unsaid between them in S3. And I do believe something actually happened before S3E8.
God I really can’t stop thinking about this and have already written pieces. And this AU I’m currently writing now is SO much longer than I thought.
Ah, one last thing. Tess will always be Daisy’s mum, she loves Daisy, she and Alec loved each other once, nothing will change these.
But Tess in S2 and now? God no! I don’t know what was she like before, but Tess in and maybe after S2 is awful to me. Really. The way she made fun of Alec when he called her ‘love’ subconsciously in the cut… and OMG she even didn’t have the decency to help Alec to repair his relationship with his own daughter, especially it wasn’t Alec’s fault at the very beginning for god’s sake! What kind of person would do that! Hasn't she hurt him enough??
Christ, she’s so selfish and mean and awful and self-centered now. Alec and Daisy both deserve so much better than her.

Hear me out alec has 3 hobbies he sticks with. 2 were developed pre sandbrook and one post.
Gardening, baked goods decorating and photography
Alec started gardening in sandbrook because it helped him relax. He had quite a green thumb and took pride in it. It certainly made tess and daisy happy having fresh herbs and veggies in the backyard to pick and eat.
After broadchurch when Daisy went to live with him, she encouraged him to pick it back up. At first he started with a windo planter only growing herbs. Eventually he moved to a bigger planter and started growing veggies again. Sometimes when he has too many he brings them to the station and gives them up freely to his Co workers. They're not sure if its alec or daisy growing them at first. Until one day PC Bob catches DI hardy kneeling over a plot in jeans and a tshirt clearly planting something. Snaps a picture and runs off. The next day the office shows small appreciations by talking about how they used something alec grew. Or how his mint was so fresh in their tea. Their boss was slightly nicer that month.
Alec showed intrest in baked good decorating when Daisy showed intrest in baking. She'd make stuff and then hand it to him to decorate. With time he got pretty damn good at it and turned it into a minor hobby. (He's good enough people assume they were bought at a store)
I'd say in broadchurch Daisy kept baking during weekends and encouraged her dad to decorate again. So he did. It started off small with cookies. He'd bring extras into the station, or allow daisy to give them to friends. Sometimes he'd give a baggie to Miller, who'd hand some to the latimers. Either way rumour spread that someone in the Hardy household was rather gifted with decorating. Some people thought they bought them some thought it was all Daisy. (Miller of course knows it's hardy as she visits often) one day at work someone was commenting how much better store bought cookies look these days and how it was nice Alec would bring them, Albeit odd.
Alec in a mildly annoyed tone responds saying "uh excuse me, I decorated those and my daughter baked them" then stormed into his office slamming the door. The station is stunned to say the least. This info spreads through broadchudch and someone actually asks alec to decorate a cake for them. Daisy takes their money and convinces her dad to do it.
Daisy and Alec spend time together during these baking decorating moments. This is why Alec enjoys it so much cause he can talk with his daughter.
The photography came after daisy moved to broadchurch. She noticed how lost her dad seemed at times. She worried about his health. He was always stressed and could never settle in the moment. One day she found a small old digital camera in a yard sale and bought it. She gave it to him as a gift and recommended he snap pictures of the day to day life of alec hardy, as a way to ground himself
At first he thought it was stupid, but one day he decided to take a picture of maybe his desk, or maybe Miller's shoe as the two of them sit outside for lunch. He kinda enjoyed it so he kept going till eventually, he put a drive together with the images he'd take. Daisy has full access and occasionally prints and frames them. She puts them around the house. The images are nothing to gawk at bur alec has a small sense of artistry with them.
(I have a bonus idea)
Daisy brings home a 2 week old kitten and convinces alec to help care for it. At first he's appaled but with time he really ends up liking the cats company. Especially when Daisy visits her mum and he's alone. He never gives the cat a name nor does he spoil it. Daisy has given it a name but it never responds to her. So it doesn't matter.
The cat ends up growing smaller than expected and enjoys sitting on alecs head and shoulder.
One quiet weekend at the station alec convinces jenkinson to allow the cat in his office while he works. Because it hasn't been feeling great and daisy isnt home to watch it.
This is the day Miller learns alec has a cat. When she walks into his office to hand him her finished paper work only to see her boss typing on his computer with a cat on his head.
She just stares and Alec stares right back before barking "what do you want millarh?!" To which she throws the paperwork on his desk and mumbles "there's something on your head sir" and leaves with a huff
After this, Miller starts bringing alec cat toys and cat treats time to time.
