The fact that the twins gained access to the marauders map will never not be funny to me for two reasons:
1) It implies that they just went around swearing their mischief to inanimate objects
2) That actually seems like something they'd do
In ATYD the beauty of the marauders friendship for Remus was how it wasn't dependant on him being a werewolf, in either sense.
They weren't his friends because he was a werewolf, and they weren't his friends even though he was a werewolf. They were his friends, and he was a werewolf.
The tragedy of the story began when they stopped trusting Remus. When they believed that he was the traitor because he was a werewolf. That's when James chose Peter over him. And that's when everything fell apart.

Marauders singer au but its Regulus being in the audience while Sirius is singing about his brother James.
Regulus chose the right side of the war that day. He was standing outside the stadium. He wanted to tell Sirius what he was going to do, he wanted to scream, and beg, and cry, and apologize, he wanted to say goodbye, but most of all he wanted Sirius to know that in the end he chose to be brave. In the end he fought against him. In the end Regulus might actually be remembered as a good person. He moved to step away, knowing deep in his soul that this was just a fever dream, like a blurry memory he knew he'd never be able to reach, when he heard the lyrics ringing out from the stadium. It was a chorus of voices, all the marauders fans singing along, but leading them was a voice he'd never forget.

While the lyrics flowed into his ears, Regulus changed his path and stepped into the stadium.

His heart swelled for a second as the words registered. Sirius remembered him. Sirius was singing about him. Sirius didn't forget him. But he stopped dead in his tracks when he heard a different voice fling out from a different microphone, eliciting a whole new round of cheers. It was James. His James.

Of course they were singing of each other. They had each other to love, and they'd never need him. Without another step he left the stadium. Normally, Regulus is very aware of everything that happens around him, his pureblood upbringing ensured that, but what he didn't know was Sirius had noticed him the moment he stepped into view, and watched him leave seconds later.
The next day, as he fell into the water, as his soul left the world forevermore, he'd never know that Sirius had watched him leave. That Sirius would spend the next week desperately searching for him. That when the news of his death came out, Sirius blamed himself. He'd never know of the hours Sirius spent crying at his grave, the tears Sirius shed for his little brother.
And Sirius would always wonder what would've happened if he had only sang a different song, one of the hundreds he had about Regulus, about his regret, and he would die not knowing that Regulus had chosen the right side of the war, outside of the stadium, that fateful night.

Okay my favorite animagus headcannon regarding the marauders is as follows:
During spring and summer, when the group would hang out outside, James would just absentmindedly chew on grass. One time he noticed everybody staring at him and had no clue what was happening and just kept munching for a solid 60 seconds just making extreme eye-contact with everybody.
Then, for Sirius' birthday James jokingly gifted him a thing of dog treats. But, later that night, when he was very drunk he tried one and discovered that they were AMAZING. From then on he always kept one hidden around wherever he was as a snack.
Years later, when he and Remus were living together, he once went to reach for the usual jar which was tucked behind their bed, only to discover that there was nothing left but a few crumbs. Remus ate much less dinner that night then normal.

He has fully forgotten everything of the friends he made at Hogwarts, of the posh, black haired boy who had his heart, of the kind hearted quidditch player, the mousy best friend and the studious redhead. The excellent birthdays, elaborate pranks and endless laughter.
He doesn't remember the friends that made Remus Lupin Remus Lupin, but the wolf remembers.
The wolf remembers running through a deep forest with a stag and a dog and a rat. The wolf remembers the cool breeze coating his fur, the hours spent howling at the moon. The friends that had once accompanied him. The wolf continues to mourn their absence every month as Remus once did.
However, one night, twelve years later, as he is howling out in agony, the wolf hears a familiar bark. Remus doesn't know why, but for some reason, each full moon after that night, he wakes up without any new scars.
