How about Selkie Flambae putting that brain cell to use. What if... Robert also Selkie? Then Flambae can drag him around the ocean AND he can also visit that one other human he likes so much?

Do you mean turning Robert into a Selkie or if Robert just happened to also be a Selkie?

Based on this other ask, it's possible either one of them will choose to die once their Fae counterpart leaves, so it's possible they'll both be Selkies and can be together.

I think whoever was the original Selkie would be incredibly upset over their decision though, and can't believe they went through with it. They're disappointed, enraged, guilty, sad, all at once. But ultimately, they'll be together because the alternative of not being together after witnessing one of their deaths is too difficult to bear. They'll be extra paranoid and want to be together all the time.

Honestly think that would fuck Flambae up more than Robert. Flambae is so appalled by what he tried to do he will be sobbing and holding Robert for a while as Robert tries to wrap his head around what the fuck just happened.

He throws his coat at Robert in remorse. Telling fae Robert unequivocally he's his to do with as he wants. Robert feels the oath lock into place, still fucked up from being half drowned. He throws the coat back at Chad, telling him to go away and stay away this time.

Augh...no that's so painful...😭 Chad is forced to keep a distance because the oath is absolute. He can only watch Robert from afar and cannot be caught by him, else he'll feel immense pain from breaking the oath. Unless Robert changes his mind and makes a new oath, Chad will never appear before him again.

He gets caught by Hunters eventually. Robert is at the black market for some rare ingredients, trying to put his mind off of Chad, only to spot the auction. Since he can't conceivably distance himself and didn't come here of his own free will, the oath doesn't punish him. Robert rescues him, if reluctantly, dragging him home and clutching the coat the entire time.

Robert instantly recognizes the seal with an injury on its right flipper. He's in disbelief and denial that Chad would get caught, but Chad doesn't look good at all. He looks ill, barely moving, and is turned away from the glass.

Robert goes to ask about that Selkie, how it got here, what's going to happen to it, horrified to learn that people are already bidding to buy him. Something raw and primal tears away at Robert, and he decides to steal him away in the middle of the night.

It's easier to move him around as a man, so Robert asks Chad to take off his Selkie coat. Chad does, but once he turns into his human form, he breaks down crying. He asks Robert to take the coat away forever, and keeps apologizing for breaking their oath of never appearing before Robert again. The man is hysterical, and Robert is trying very hard to calm him down and shush him before people come inspecting.

He barely manages to haul Chad home, and Chad looks more and more pale, more and more in pain as time goes on. Robert finally realizes it's because of his careless oath that he spouted in the heat of the moment, and feels immensely guilty that he ever said such a thing, even if what Chad did back then was wrong. For now, Robert tells Chad to take the bed as he takes the couch, sleeping on what to do next.

Going crazy thinking about Flambae, his perfect skin, hair, figure. A vain and prideful man. Thinking about how his only injuries, his only "flaws," came from Robert.

Thinking about Robert, more trauma than man, every inch of his skin mapped with a past experience that went wrong, going all the way back to when he was eight with a bleeding ear.

Thinking about Robert being the only one to have ever hurt Flambae, and Flambae who became the gentlest touch Robert has ever known.

"So," Robert checked hesitantly, "no twinkies?"

Chase squeezed Robert's left hand. An IV was still in the other, dripping blood and who knew what else into Robert's veins. "No twinkies," Chase confirmed solemnly. "If any of these motherfuckers tries to sneak you any, I'm putting them on sewer and crossing guard duty until your skinny ass crawls back to work."

The hospital room erupted into protests, the Z-team more than happy to dismiss the resigned nurse's protest of only two visitors at a time. Robert noticed Sonar hastily shove something back into his pocket, and Visi vanished for several moments before reappearing with an innocent expression.

More importantly, he noticed how Flambae sat quietly in the corner. He didn't laugh at the comment, nor look up when Prism gently bumped his shoulder. He only silently picked at his nails.

Robert runs into Flambae outside a nightclub (he was out walking aimlessly, unable to sleep) and walks Flambae home when it becomes clear he’s had too much.

(Chad is not actually that drunk but once Robert wraps a hand around his waist he kind of feels like he is).

do you think the eridians would repatriate grace's body to earth after he inevitably dies? or would they understand that he wouldn't want to face the cold dark void of space again, and keep him on erid? would rocky trawl through the huge expanse of information stored on the hail mary, hoping to find something about earth funeral customs? do you think they would at least send a message about it to earth - after all, he was theirs first? do you think by that time, there would be people on earth who weren't even born during the astrophage crisis, but nevertheless had grown up hearing the stories of the brave astronaut and his alien friend who had saved the planet? do you think ryland grace, who starts out the movie as stratt's dispensable guinea pig, no partner or family, "you don't even have a dog", would become the first living thing to be globally mourned by TWO planets? yeah just a thought

okay, since I've been feeling very normal about Project: Hail Mary again recently, here's something I keep thinking about:

We're on Erid, and Grace is expecting Rocky for their daily walk on the beach. Only today it's not the beach; the environmental engineers tasked with developing the Earth Dome have released a patch of forest for testing, that they're going to explore. Grace is about vibrating with excitement, and kind of a mess when Rocky loudly knocks on the front door-glasses askew, only one boot on yet, the usual.

He thinks it's lack of sleep at first, making him see double, but no, that's two Eridians on his porch. Rocky says "Grace, Grace I brought Adrian to meet, I made a suit for them look!!!" Adrian hums a greeting. Grace says, "nope", and slams the door in their face. Distress noises from Adrian. Rummaging and curses from inside the house.

Grace whips open the door again, and now his hair is brushed, his glasses sit straight on his face, and he holds out a little round sphere of colored glass. He blurts:

"Rocky named a planet after you. This is Adrian." Pause. "I'm Grace. Nice to meet you!" Pause.

Rocky starts laughing uncontrollably.

in a world where grace eventually goes back to earth when erid is ready to make full contact. he's officially an eridian and earth dual citizen and is a physically very old man. it's also been a lot of earth years since he was here, especially due to time dilation. he comes off the eridian lander in a hoverchair accompanied by rocky in his little xenonite suit and is like wow, fresh air. rocky isn't it so beautiful here. rocky this is the ground i used to walk on. rocky this is the food i used to eat. rocky these are the people you helped me save. amaze amaze amaze.

and his speech has taken on eridian habits from years of only really communicating in eridian: he drops and raises octaves to show emotion, he's speaks melodically and with a rythmn that pings as music when you first hear it. his creaky old man voice is that of somebody who has spent their whole life singing, somebody who speaks for a living, because he's both of those things. his syntax is strange and his sentences are structured oddly. he looks around at everything with the delight and wonder of somebody who thought he'd never see any of this again.

he watches a sunset. he watches the rain fall. he watches a spider spin a web. he watches a waterfall. he smells and tastes and feels and sees and hears all of the things he left behind. he misses his home on erid. he's never been happier to be anywhere in his life. it's strange. rocky, it's strange. this isn't home, anymore. but it's still part of me. rocky, it's strange.

there's a statue of him in every major city he visits. he stands in front of the school he used to teach at, which was named after a dead president when he was here. now it's called ryland grace memorial middle school. it was named for him as the sun got brighter and the earth mourned his sacrifice yet again, but praised him for saving them. the lab he used to teach in, on the days he got to lead practical experiments, is named after rocky. rocky, it's for you! they love you, too! rocky, this sign is for you, it says your name!

eva stratt is an old woman, now. she was pardoned, in the end, in the wave of relief that followed the beatles' arrival with the taumeba. she's lived out the rest of her life quietly, ambition tamped down in the wake of it all. she's still sharp. harsh. she greets grace with an, "I told you so," but even after so many years, grace can see that she's glad to see him. glad he survived. glad he doesn't seem angry with her.

and it's not that grace has forgive her. he explains this to her over a cup of strong, black coffee. rocky explores the forest to give them time to speak. it's not that he forgives her. what she did, the decision she made for him, it wasn't right. it wasn't good. it saved the world, yes, but it wasn't fair. but. but, he says. i have a good life. i have friends. i have a classroom. i know now that you were wrong about me, back then. i am not a coward, and i am not selfish. i was afraid. i was terrified. i was lost. and now i am none of those things. i do not forgive you, but i am not angry with you, either. it is what it is. rocky and i, we saved two worlds. i can live with that, even if i don't forgive you. and eva stratt nods and understands. and they finish their coffee.

a handful of grace's students, the last class he taught before being wrapped up in the end of the world, they ask to see him. not all of them. some of them didn't make it through the disasters that came with the years long dimming. some of them never really believed that grace was the one who saved the world, falling into the rhetoric of those who say the whole thing was a hoax, and the weather patterns fixing themselves is just proof of it. but the ones who do come are surprised when grace remembers each of their names. remembers where they sat in his classroom, and the jokes they thought were funny and the jokes they thought were lame. they talk to him and he remembers throwing them beanbags in the end of the world and trying to make them laugh. when grace laughs at something rocky sings into the world, he's laughing through more than a few tears. he tells his students, the kids he saved the world for, that they've just been called leaky blobs by the other savior of the world.

when his students leave, grace sits in the setting sun, strong and warm, and looks out over the ocean. rocky, isn't it beautiful? rocky, don't you see? we made this possible, rocky. we saved them. we saved this. rocky, we did it.

and for maybe the first time since it all started, grace believes it. rocky, we did it. we did it. we saved them. we did it.
