Marco survived, but received terrible scars (burns / loss of half his face). He survived on his own, but returned a changed man: withdrawn, ashamed of his appearance.

Jean, who had already mourned his friend, finds him in the infirmary. Guilt (Jean believes he abandoned him) clashes with Marco's unwillingness to be seen in public.

Jean brings Marco books and food every day, annoying him with his persistence.

Marco is told that he can no longer serve anywhere (due to the loss of his arm and eye). This, of course, upsets him greatly.

Marco has a major complex about his face, so at first he doesn't show it fully to Jean.
