“That said, we got some time before it comes up. Hopefully the island’s government does better this time around.”

“Would really hate to see the mayor or police catch any heat over yet an—”

“—only be one. And this is it.”

“Well, exactly none of that went according to plan.”

“Cae.” 

“When you really think about it, I’m not sure what anyone expected. Obviously there is some discourse and no one wants to talk about it.”

Reggie sighs, a muffled including me barely audible over the radio waves.

“Let’s just do a quick recap.” Cae ignores the sounds of protest. “Pretty sure next year is cancelled, but everything is good and great and then wham!, they’re popping out eyeballs—”

“One. It was one eye.”

“So, Markus is gone, right? People are going nuts. Screaming, running, fightin’. That whole ear thing? That’s pretty badass.”

“Cae.”

“I know. And the craziest thing is—”

“Okay. No. We are going to do this the right way.” Silence. Reg clears his throat. “Wickway Police are cleaning up after a botched Winter Social. No arrests have been made at this time. Which is, you know, kind of bullshit. Anyway. It was unprecedented. The Santoro family nearly killed a man in front of everyone. Would have, too, if it hadn’t gotten messy. They are responsible for countless other attacks that night on good people. What those people don’t realize is that they saved a life last night, and if they keep it up, they will continue saving lives—”

“Wow.”

“What?”

“Say more.”

“...Get it together, Wickway. Have a great night.”

“Reggie and Cae, over and out.”

“How did it even end last night, Reg?”

“I don’t know, Cae. It just did." Reg clears his throat. "Good morning, Wickway. For those just tuning in, last night was a doozy. Chaos erupted in City Hall when Dominic Santoro’s dead body was found outside the meeting room. Residents went into fight or flight—”

“No, no, no, no. I saw that Santoro chick pull out a gun and then people were all over the—”

“Cae—”

“We all saw it. There’s no reason to not say it. She pulled out a gun and it was like 2016 all over again. Longest night of my life. The gang tried to make a comeback, and the good ones fought back. Just like we said last week, Reg. The good ones are trying to protect—”

“There’s no such thing as a good gang member, Cae. Anyway.”

“I stayed out, too. I saw a bunch of people. Like the ones they said had to do with that boat? I saw them real early on. And that real angry guy that owns the bar? He was busy. Dominic’s giant brother, too. He was fighting that guy from the motel. And the cops were all over the place.”

“Can we please get back to—”

BROADCAST INTERRUPTED

“To the residents of Wickway that are innocent in this, we are sorry for your suffering. We fought for you before; we fight for you now." Beat. "That fight will not end until they are gone, and if you are tired and fed up , you are invited to join us. You know where to find us.”

Static momentarily consumes the airways.

“Leo Santoro, you are— what?”

“Jack—”

“Fucking find him —”

A strained voice, softened by a dry throat and thickened by a swollen tongue is nearly indistinguishable from the soft crackling of static in the distance. A high level heist and they can’t even afford a good microphone… But that is always how it goes, isn’t it? The little guys get their stab at the big ones. After so many years of defeat, something in Dominic says hey… maybe they deserve some kind of pity win. “They want me to--” he gulps down the syrupy saliva that has begun to coat the inside of his cheeks, “They want me to read this bullshit-- like we’re in a movie.” The laugh that follows is more of a croak, gravel grinding against his larynx. He coughs, but the itch is still there. “I’m supposed to read my fucking lines and they won’t even get me water?” “You know what? Fuck this. I’m not about to--” another series of coughs, tighter and rumbling in his chest. “I don’t wanna do this shit. Fuck all of you-- fuck everybody who did this, fuck all you bastards I helped back then--” Panic overtakes his voice as a keen listener’s ear may pick up on a click! In the background, “--hell, fuck Leo, cause it’s probably his fucking fau--”

“You have twenty-four hours to comply.” Static. Barely rising above the white noise, the muffled groans of Dominic Santoro.

Static. Another voice, vaguely familiar but not the same as the first. “We have Dominic Santoro. Give up the locations of every missing person on the island, or he will join them.”

“Early this morning, it was brought to our attention that Dominic Santoro has been reported missing.” “Reg, do you think that has to do with—” “—Yesterday’s broadcast is currently being investigated by local police in connection to his disappearance.”

A voice, vaguely familiar but impossible to pinpoint through the static comes across the airwaves. “...our island. We will not stand by. We have to fight. Now is the time.They cannot have our island. Cae clears his throat. "Yours truly has an anonymous source at the Wickway Police Department." "You have to be kidding me—" "Nope! Police have identified two of the three, uh, dead people from the church. Shannon Lakely and Sarah Kramer—"

Reggie clears his throat. “We are interrupting our normal broadcast with breaking news. Tomorrow morning, Wickway Police will be releasing updates and details pertaining to the findings after last month’s storm, as well as more recent events. As always, we will be—”

“Wait, wait, wait. You mean we can’t tell them now?”

“Cae.”

“Right. Stay tuned, Wickway!”
