PSA: Writing is a cultivatable skill, not an innate talent.
âI am hugely flattered when people tell me they think Iâm a good writer (personally I think I am âreasonably capableâ) BUT in any conversation about my writing, itâs VERY important to note that Iâve been writing for fun in some capacity, pretty much daily, since about 2002. The way that I got âgoodâ at writing was by doing it. A LOT. (Trust me: I still have some of the old stuff, and looking at it makes me CRINGE. Hard.) So please, donât ever look at your own writing and say âOther people are better at this, why should I bother?â There will always be someone whose writing you look up to, and thatâs okay. If writing brings you joy or you have a story you want to tell, you deserve to do it! The worst that will happen is that your writing will get a little better with each thing you write.
Yep, I definitely needed to hear this.
To anyone looking at her, Hotaru seems to be having a good time at Usagi and Mamoruâs wedding. But there is something unpleasant gnawing at the back of her mind. Manga canon. Written for Hotaruâs birthday 2022.

Call for Sailor Moon Fandom History Testimonials
Hi, everyone! As part of an essay I'm writing for the @dropsofmoonlightzine on the history of the Sailor Moon fandom, I'm collecting fan testimonials using this Google Form. Some of you may have listened to a @mondsteinflug podcast episode series from 2020 on this topic. For that interview series, I talked to a lot of different people within the Sailor Moon fandom about their experiences as a fan, identified themes that emerged from their responses, and put them into a sort of historical narrative. For this essay, I'm trying to update some of that content. If I interviewed you back then and you'd like to contribute again through this survey, please do so! If you weren't around or weren't able to participate back then, I would love your contributions this time around! Thank you, and don't hesitate to reach out on Tumblr or Discord if you have questions! PS: Please spread the word!
Little Mermaid Beryl AU
What if Beryl was the mermaid who chose to kill her prince? Who asked the Sea Goddess for human legs and lived with her beloved until he chose another? She was told if she stabbed his heart she could return to the sea, so that is what she did. His blood spilled on her legs, splitting them into eight and staining them crimson. The tentacles pulled her overboard, deep into the gray waters below.

This was my first fic and it is my baby. However, since it was my first fic, it is definitely in need of some TLC to get it on par with my improved writing ability. No major plot changes, just better words.
When Usagi crashes at Mamoruâs for the weekend, it throws a serious wrench in his plans. How will he ever figure out what his dreams are telling him with that annoying Odango-Atama hanging around? Throw in a life-altering stomach virus and chaos will ensue. UsaMamo beginnings. AU. Reincarnation.

Ooo I am excited!
I would really really really like to just enjoy reading fics again instead of constantly comparing my writing to others
So, if youâve never had a chance to explore it, I would check out Carol Dweckâs research on Growth Mindset.
The short version is:
People with a fixed mindset tend to assume that talent/intelligence is innate and canât be changed.
People with a growth mindset tend to assume that talent/intelligence is a skill that can be developed over time.
Certain thinking patterns are associated with each one. Generally, a fixed mindset gets you stuck and you tend to avoid challenge. Whereas, a growth mindset youâre always thinking about how you can grow and develop and improve so the assumption is that you CAN get to the place where your talent is as amazing as anyoneâs.
When someone with a fixed mindset encounters someone âbetterâ than they are they tend to compare and they tend to see it as evidence that their own skill is worthless and that they shouldnât bother. They donât practice as much and they donât get better.
When someone with a growth mindset encounters someone âbetterâ than they are they tend to see it as an opportunity to learn. They study the other work, they ask the other performer about their technique and how they developed their skill. And they start practicing those things. And they tend to improve.
The cool thing about this, is that when you can recognize the fixed mindset thoughts and learn to replace them with growth mindset thoughts you can start adopting a growth mindset really easily. (like seriously a fifteen minute training/intervention in identifying fixed thought patterns and replacing them with growth thought patterns makes a LONG LASTING impact on studentsâ willingness to engage in âdifficultâ tasks and concepts).
A common misconception is people assume you can only be one or the other. When Iâm actuality all of us are both in different areas and spheres. We tend to practice a growth mindset when we are confident - areas where we have experience and expertise. We tend to be fixed where we donât have a lot of confidence. Like when youâre learning a new skill for the first time or trying to do something outside of your comfort zone. But again, if you catch yourself being fixed (if you know what that means) itâs pretty easy to reprogram yourself in how you react to challenge or facing others who are âbetterâ than you.
Honestly, Iâve been writing fic for 18 years. I remember feeling threatened by amazing fic. And feeling sad that I would never be that good. But now, whenever I find an amazing fic I get super excited!! When I find someone whoâs really good at description ( @ellorgast ) I literally copy and paste swaths of it into a document, then I tear it apart and use it to make sentence frames for myself to write my own unique descriptors until I master the style. Or if I find someone who is super good at battles (cough @chronicallylatetotheparty cough) I pour over it again and again asking myself what did they do here that makes that subtext so real and so emotionally raw that Iâm on the edge of my seat for 40k words in a row!!
And ALSO, itâs just so exciting to find a fic thatâs âbetterâ than mine because I get to friggin read and consume it without pouring in the hours of labor myself to create it!! And that is just AWESOME!!
(At some point, I really stopped comparing amazing fics to one another. I mean, I stopped ranking them. I remember now as this is the writer thatâs really good at character arcs, this is the story that taught what itâs like to have epilepsy or be biracial, this is the story that is my model for witty banter, this is the story that always makes me friggin cry. Like instead of ranking them, I learned to sort fics based on their own individual strengths).
You also donât have to be the best at something for it to be amazing! Someone will connect to your story more than anyone elseâs they have ever read for personal reasons or you write it in a different style that may not be technically as good, but made it more accessible for that person.
Your feelings are also completely normal and completely valid. Feelings always are. Let yourself feel them and donât beat yourself up for having them. And I hope, then you donât let them stop you from finding inspiration to continue your writing journey.
Reblogging because this is beautiful and so important to remember

Sorry if this sounds rude and/or demanding, but what are the "rules of fanfic?" I have been in the community for a while, but have only learned from osmosis and want to make sure I'm doing it right.
There arenât really any set-in-stone rules, just common accepted behavior that the wider fandom community agrees on through practice. The issue is that different fandoms, and in this case different fanfiction sites, have different standards of behavior and itâs annoying to see people not adjust their behavior when coming to a different site. Â Most of it is learned through osmosis like you said, but some people need it spelled out.
- Donât steal shit - Art or fic. The post i made earlier was inspired by seeing a fic where the author said not to repost their work on another site without permission, than admitted the fic featured art they stole from google images. Super hypocritical. Donât do that.
- Donât copy other peopleâs fics - âInspired byâ does not mean tell the exact same story beat for beat with only a few minor changes to detail and word choice. This has happened to me twice now. Insert Doofenshmertz meme.
- If you want to write something inspired by someone else, ask first. Itâs polite.
- Donât beg for updates in the comments
- Donât advertise your own work in the comments of someone elseâs fic
- Donât spam comments
- Donât write sexual comments on nonsexual works
- Donât talk about ships on a gen work
- Donât leave criticisms the author didnât ask for
- Donât ârequestâ what authors should write in future chapters. Speculate what might happen sure, donât demand it.
- Donât make posts/send messages fishing for someone to write/draw your idea for you, like âfeel free to use this idea ;).â Â If you want it so bad, either make it yourself or commission someone.
- Donât bother with that read-for-read stuff. There are discord servers and such to advertise your work, donât demand attention from other authors, then get upset when they arenât interested.
- Donât shame/guilt trip people for not reading your work.
- Donât make a fic on ao3 thatâs just âlooking for a ficâ or âfic requestâ or the like. There are plenty of other social media platforms to ask people for help finding something specific. Doing it on ao3 clogs the feed.
- Speaking of clogging the feed, donât tag every single character who happens to have a speaking line or cameo. The tags are for people trying to find stories that feature the character in question and itâs annoying to have to sort though things where they only appear once and have maybe two lines. Stick to the ones who matter in the story.
- Be diligent in tagging other things. Not just potentially triggering topics. Do research and learn what tags mean and when they are warranted. Unlike wattpad, ao3 doesnât have an algorithm so tags matter more than anything. Â They let people find what they want to see, and block what they donât.
- Donât tagscum, aka stuffing tags that donât/barely apply in order to get attention.
- Just donât be an inconsiderate jerk.
Thereâs also a decent tvtropes forum discussion with these points and others if you want further reading:
https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/posts.php?discussion=14350378750A28171600&page=1
A great starter list of the unwritten rules for not pissing people off in the realm of fanfiction. Not stealing others work or ideas without permission is the most important.
The rules on tagging are really critical but Iâd say I worry less about over-tagging and more about triggers NOT being tagged. Iâm glad AO3 instated a 75 tag limit now, but I also love to laugh at the creative tags. So thereâs a sweet spot. But definitely TAG THE TRIGGERS.
If I were to add to this I would also say respect the authorâs privacy. Donât ask for personal information they havenât shared and donât spread it to others if they DO share personal details with you.
