the difference
a man will kill for you, but a woman! a woman will die for you.

Post-hike, I turned my phone off airplane mode and was greeted by a string of texts: “Can I get your moisturizer for you?” “I got it [heart emoji]” “If you don’t need it, it can be stocked at my house too” I was floored. A boy would never! A boy would have no idea I was out of moisturizer, let alone what brand I use, let alone be shopping for his own moisturizer, let alone buy mine for me. Boys are unobservant and don’t value skincare. Anyways, dating women still rocks
in this year 2019 I am no longer encouraging heterosexuality
giving thanks
Thankful for my houseplants for giving me something to nurture. For group texts and all of the technology that bring far away friends closer to me. Thankful for my hands and for my mind. For friendship of all shapes and sizes. For the fact that I get to kiss the prettiest girl in the whole damn world anytime I want. Thankful for the Pacific Northwest for raising me, Pittsburgh for educating me, and Los Angeles for its endless sunshine and tacos.
For resilience, persistence, hope, and the other things that allow us to keep going.
I moved my desk into my studio (oh! I got a studio, a huge deal for me), and my room feels a million times roomier and more relaxing. I bumped my bed out from the corner; for the first time in my life I can get out of my bed on either side, which makes me feel like a real adult. I built a second tiny shelf-nightstand and dug up a second phone charger and plugged it into the wall. Millenial domesticity. I know I am a biased source, but I don’t know how anyone could go back to dating men after dating a woman. When she stays over, there is a whole array of skincare for her to use. What lipstick are you wearing she asks, I want to try it. She showed up at my doorstep with an armful of sunflowers and a loaf of bread last night. She has a cold-- I made her lentil soup and a big mug of tea. Why would you date a man when you could date someone that will always text you back, will happily DM you about jumpsuits all day, is genuinely interested in where you got your linen sheets. Why would you date a man when you could be seen and heard and loved so thoroughly.
(Here is the secret truth: sexuality is fake, everyone is bi, lesbians are just bi women that are completely unwilling to date men, and everyone else who is willing to date a man, will end up dating a man because they are so freaking convenient.)

You can see right through the curtain. Can you?… can you?
Leap Year (2010) dir. Anand Tucker
Never going to get over the fact that my coworker THOUGHT FEBRUARY HAD EITHER 30 OR 31 DAYS, HE COULDN’T REMEMBER, WHICH BY EXTENSION, MEANS HE DIDN’T KNOW LEAP YEAR EXISTED. WHICH IS ESPECIALLY INSANE CONSIDERING HE HAS SEEN THIS MOVIE AND REFERENCED IT MULTIPLE TIMES.

In 2017 I decided that metaphor was dead, but just one last one:
On one of the longest, darkest nights of the year, I planted a seed in the snow and crossed my fingers, hoping against hope that it would sprout.
seeds sprout, y’all
How do you feel about aesthetically "pretty" art? (Basically the stuff successful Instagram artists are churning out.)
At this point I am assuming that the same person is sending me all of these questions in some sort of attempt to keep this blog alive (thank you! I will answer all of them!)
Hmmmmm, I have always been a conceptually minded artist, and both entering art school, and entering the broader art world post grad, was a kind of brutal awakening that the vast majority of artists are not concerned with concept. Ideas have always been central to art for me, and I personally connect most with artwork that is also attempting to communicate an idea.
That being said, in terms of simple “pretty” instagram art, who cares? People can make whatever they want, it doesn’t really hurt me/affect me. Do I wish more artists made art that is ABOUT something? Absolutely. Do I wish audiences were looking for more than just something pretty? Sure.
But in the end, aesthetically pleasing if empty art is better than ugly and empty art (of which their is PLENTY). I appreciate that at the very least, these artists are not putting ugly things into the world.
