Youth Jailed Since April For Alleged $5 Grocery Theft, Found Dead In Jail Cell
A young man was arrested by Portsmouth, Virginia police over a mere $5 in groceries that he stole because he was hungry.
The arrest came on the same day a Portsmouth cop shot and killed an unarmed African American 18-year-old.
But now, Jamycheal Mitchell, 24, has been found dead in his jail cell, after spending four months behind bars with no conviction and no bail.
Mitchell had no muscle mass left by the time he died. As a registered nurse, she said she believes he was starving himself, apparently to pressure the âjusticeâ system to  stop locking him up indefinitely.
Mitchell was accused of stealing a $1 bottle of Mountain Dew, a Snickers bar and a Zebra Cake. Combined, these amounted to a total of $5 he is accused of stealing from a 7-Eleven.
For that, he has been locked up for months, awaiting trail, and it is not even clear that he committed those crimes. There may have, perhaps, been a dispute about payment. Or perhaps he began consuming the food in the store and his credit or debit card was declined. Both of these scenarios could result in the same charges.
Perhaps still, he was poor, hungry, and stole food from time to time. Are we really in the business of locking people in cages for months over stealing food?
Mitchellâs death has not been covered by national, or even local media in Virginia, aside from a brief mention on the 11 oâclock news. Help us SPREAD THE WORD before the police start shaping the narrative of this young manâs death!

Hawking was a passionate defender of the NHS, and also believed that automation should liberate the people not enrich those with capital. He was granted by technology a life longer than anyone thought possible for someone with his illness.
How many geniuses have we lost or overlooked because they werenât granted the resources to thrive in our unequal society? How can this be right when scarcity of basic needs is entirely manufactured?

New study: 60% of Muslims in the US reported religious discrimination in the past year
A new study from the Institute for Social Policy and Understanding, a social science research institute, finally offers the public an accurate depiction of Muslim life in Trumpâs America.
The study, released on Tuesday, found that a total of 60% of Muslims in the U.S. experienced some form of religious discrimination in 2016.Â
The study also found that Muslim women (68%) are more likely than Muslim men (55%) to report religious discrimination in the last year.Â
In addition, the report found Muslims are more than twice as likely as Jewish, Catholics and Protestants to be stopped at the U.S. border for additional screening.
ISPUâs study also found that Muslims expressed fear that the result of the 2016 presidential elections emboldened white extremists: About 38% of Muslims expressed fear over their familyâs and own personal safety from white supremacist groups.
According to the study, about 42% of Muslims with children reportedly religiously-motivated bullying. One in four of these bullying incidents reportedly came from a teacher or school official. Read more (3/21/17 6 PM)
