ALRIGHT I saw a tutorial on blood going around earlier and it was just sooo abbreviated that it made me kind of peeved so I set out to give what little blood knowledge to the test to make a slightly more robust tutorial. (Credentials drawing? 4 years of art school plus like 16 as a hobbyist. Credentials with blood? I liked watching Dexter once and I have a period.)
OTHER THINGS FOR YOUR CONSIDERATION:
Drawing from reference is your friend! If you can find life references to go from, fucking GO HAM. Study the shit out of that, the best way to mimic something is to watch it in action. This was put together very quickly but I made sure to do a couple google image searches while I was doing this to see if I was getting the right ideas. This still isn’t perfect. I’m not perfect, I can be wrong!
ALSO: Do yourself a favor and look up stuff about Blood Pattern Analysis, I found This PDF while fact-checking and that gives a good overview of the basics, though you can probably find even more extensive information with a good google search. Forensic scientists use this all the time as a crime-solving tool and you bet your hiney there’s gonna be resources out there documenting the information. These make handy reference tools!
Menstrual blood was added for educational purposes, I don’t know if you’d necessarily be DRAWING it but if you have a period, it might be something you see regularly and might want to observe. In that case, I tried to document what’d make the composition different because it IS pretty different than blood coming from the rest of the body, if only because it’s usually seen with tissue or other fluid.

I canât stress enough the importance of stretching your hands, and forearms every morning and every evening, spend 5-10 minutes going through a stretching routine. These are very easy to do, takes little time to do them. Itâs VERY common in all animation studios. Conditions can slowly develop, the most typical one is Repetitive Strain Injury, itâs a prevalent condition resulting from overusing the hands to perform a repetitive task, such as typing, clicking a mouse, writing, and of course drawing. In simple medical terms, repetitive strain injury (RSI) stems from prolonged repetitive, forceful, or awkward hand movements. The result is minor damage to muscles, tendons, and nerves of the neck, shoulder, forearm, and most commonly hand and wrist, which can cause pain, weakness, or numbness. If youâre feeling some pains, tingles, weakness, or numbness in the wrist/forearm; one of the best ways to heal quickly are âContrasting Bathsâ. What crazy voodoo am I speaking of? A couple different physiotherapists and massage therapists had recommended this technique to me several years ago, and for anyone I knew that tried it, they all say the results are fast and effective. Commonly used by carpal tunnel suffers, itâs a method of treating muscle soreness, swelling and inflammation, itâs also known as Hot/Cold Immersion Therapy. You can use the double sink in your kitchen at home, if you donât have one, then get your hands on two very large identical bowls, it needs to be big enough to submerge your entire forearms from wrist to elbow. Fill one up with ice cold water (with a couple dozen ice cubes floating in there). The other with very warm water, not tea-kettle boiling hot water, just hot tap water, or as warm as you can handle, no sense in burning yourself of course. Have a stop watch or clock ready, and submerge your arms for 30 seconds in the hot, then switch to doing 30 sec. in the cold, and repeat a few times back and forth, 30 sec. a piece. After only a few times youâll notice the hot water getting cooler and the cold water getting warmer, so then the technique grows to be less effective, but by then, the job is done. The idea is that the extreme heat and cold contracts and expands your blood vessels, promoting greater blood flow to circulate and flush through your arms, and increased blood flow is what aids in healing faster! I see this kinda advice passed around all the time here is the thing: shading with black will indeed look bad if you don’t know what you are doing. However, telling people not to do things without explaining why is terrible advice.
Shadows are the opposite of light, this includes in colour.
This means that if you have light in one colour, the shadow will be of the opposing hue, saturation, and value.
Unless the object is white, it has its own local colour - the object’s true colour, how it would appear if the light were pure white.
The colour of the light influences the local colour of the object. so if you had yourself a brown cube and a blue light, the colours would get bluer and pinker.
now the reason shadows do not tend to be black is because pure white light is hard to find in nature.
the closest you will get to pure white light is during a really overcast day and the sun is filtering through the clouds, but even then it’ll lean towards yellow so the shadows will be slightly blue.

But! None of this means you are never allowed to use black.
realistically shadows will have a hint of a colour to them, but stylistically you might be going for, say, a film noir look and deep black shadows are needed for impact for example.
The more you know about how light works, the more informed decisions you can make about shading and the more options you have.
If someone tells you that you can’t do something, they’re wrong! you can do what you like!
yes, black is hard to use and if you just mix a colour with black it’ll get muddy, but thats easily resolved by choosing your colours manually - which ideally you want to do regardless bc the computer doesnt have your eyes & cant choose the colours you like
basically if someone gives you some art advice and says you can’t do something, they’re wrong! you can, you just might need to study a little to figure out how to make things work.
I mean for example, people will say you must make your composition follow the rule of thirds and never align centrally, but while the rule of thirds makes it easy to create visual interest, Mad Max Fury Road is a testament to the fact that central composition can and will work if you experiment.
there are no rules in art! there are theories based on reality, this has been a post on colour theory & light theory, but they exist to inform you, not to restrict you.
Do what you like! Trust your eyes, if you think something looks good, then great! If you don’t, then research & experiment until you do.
