"cut them down, jack"
In Defense of "Snake/Otacon"
Let me talk about the Snake/Otacon ship from the Metal Gear Solid series.
I consider them a canon couple ship them as a non-canon, but textually-supported “couple,” even though they are both supposedly heterosexual in the series. As in they’ve both fucked women before.
Or at least Otacon did. I don’t know about Snake, since he had the habit of picking bitches up, and then leaving them at last moment’s notice because of whiskey dick or something, idk. Snake openly ogles the game’s female characters and gravure models, though.
But as it is, Snake and Otacon were each others’ first (and perhaps last) long-term relationship.
Even though the Meryl ending is the canon ending to MGS1, somehow Snake ended up losing her and going back to Otacon. Snake and Otacon found the two-member organization Philanthrophy, where together, they fight nuclear weapons and injustice, and Otacon fits Snake with skin-tight sneaking suits because Hideo Kojima really loves CG-programming Snake’s asscheeks (no, he really does).
And then after Raiden rescues Olga’s little daughter from the Patriots, Snake and Otacon adopt Sunny. She lives with the two of them, they bicker and nag at each other over their respective “parenting skills” (or lack of), and for all intents and purposes, they become a little family. It’s not until Naomi that Sunny even has a female parental figure in her life.
Then, after MGS4—after Naomi dies following her brief “plot device-ish” fling with Otacon…after Meryl officially dumps Snake for younger, hotter meat…after the entire world turns its back on Snake because he is old and “ugly” and not human—Otacon (and Sunny) are the only ones there for him.
Just…listen to Snake and Otacon’s after-credits codec call in MGS4. If it doesn’t play like a love confession scene, then I don’t know what is. Also, provided that MGS4 stays chronologically the last game in the series, the last thing Snake ever says is Otacon’s name.
Oh, and Snake and Otacon’s voice actors deliberately played their dialogue together in MGS1 as love scenes. Those two are written so gay that even their voice actors caught onto and played along with it.
I ship Snake and Otacon, not because I think it’s attractive (I don’t even want to think about them sexually because ew…no…Otacon…just no), but because their dynamic and everything about their relationship is fantastic. They’re like an old married couple who I do not want to see going at it, but I can still appreciate their emotional loveliness.
A hero of war, is that what they see? Just medals and scars, so damn proud of me
