Kingdom Hearts 2 sure had some…interesting taglines:

1. “Distant hearts, when rejoined as one… May find the light within.”

2. “When distant hearts beat as one, their hands will be joined together once again.”

3. “A scattered heart unites once hands join.”

The common theme in each of these is separated hearts being rejoined as one. Interesting that these taglines were written as they were, considering the main drive of Sora’s journey in kh2 was to find and reunite with Riku, and even more interesting in light of Yozora…who is possibly a literal union of Sora and Riku’s hearts into one. Of course, I doubt Nomura had much beyond the beginnings of BBS planned when KH2 came out so I’m not saying that these quotes originally were hinting at anything beyond KH2, but one thing Nomura loves to do is continue to expand on vague themes and concepts introduced in previous titles. And we know the theme of two hearts beating as one/becoming one is something the series has continuously been moving towards more and more, with regards to Sora and Riku.

Just some more disorganized thoughts about these under the cut:

@icing-on-the-icecream #ya know i’ve suspected for a while now that the scattered dream that’s like a far off memory quote has to do with sora and riku#especially since in the jp version sora says at the end 一緒に (issho ni) meaning together#which is the same wording he uses at the end of 2 when he says we’ll go together

Ooooh, very interesting! So he says something like “I want to line the pieces up, yours and mine- together”?

If what Sora says at the end is meant to be taken as a parallel to his opening words, and the opening is also in the same vein as these taglines, it also lines up with the whole “hands joining” thing, as Sora extends his hand to Riku as he says it.

Here’s the full quote in Japanese if you’re interested:

遠い思い出のようなちぎれた夢

ちぎれた夢のような遠い思い出

The first two lines are accurately translated (a far off memory…etc.) with the minor exception of the verb ちぎれた which means to be torn to pieces, which has a slightly different connotation than scattered.

As for the other two lines, they can be read more accurately as:

It’s that I want to connect them (lit. join/tie/knot together)

Together (with you)

On top of that, Sora is shown standing at the crossroads seen in CoM, a place with undeniable connections to Riku…
