I don’t know why I never mention this, but he also made a bunch of Commodore 64 games which are somewhat infamous in Australia for featuring in a horribly named compilation the U-Bewdy All Aussie Pack. Four of the 10 games were his and every single game in the compilation was substandard. This pack sold for really cheap even when new though so virtually everyone who had a C64 bought it, and virtually every used C64 comes with it (or the possibly worse Blue Ribbon and Red Ribbon packs. Who’d market a compilation as second prize anyway?) Here is one of his earlier games, African Safari, which seems heavily influenced (and possibly stealing from) an earlier Australian C64 game, ZIm Bala Zim:
Strangely, another game he made is Pingo, an early Pengo clone, but it’s not the first Australian C64 Pengo clone called Pingo! It seems to be a deliberate move, but why? Why clone a clone?
Another thing I’ve never mentioned because I can’t source it: Once maybe 10 years ago I was trying to solve many of the above mysteries before Egg Venture’s infamy took off and one of the results I found was an Australian amusement industry expo located on the Gold Coast and some sort of official blog where the guy writing it was taking the piss out of Kyle, Egg Venture and some sort of habit of turning up with his latest pissant game they’re not interested in. And I mean, keep in mind the people at this exhibition weren’t gamers, they were operators. The same people who love dumb ticket games, the same people who replaced legit Daytonas with turbo hacks, the same people who bought such crap as Egg Venture in the first place. Their standards are very low and somehow they still didn’t like it!
Basically Kyle’s games are painfully Australian and we are all very sorry about it. I honestly thought Hard Head was one of us when I first saw it. I’ve been absolutely fascinated with his shitty games all my life.
