Something is watching over you. I hope you find it comforting.
Donziger won Indigenous clients a $9.5 billion settlement from Chevron for poisoning the Amazon. Now he's gone to jail after a US judge appointed a Chevron-linked private law firm to serve as prosecutor in a contempt of court case. (Federal prosecutors refused to try the case)
One judge in the first case did not disclose he held investments in Chevron and was openly hostile to the plaintiffs. He appointed the second judge, who not only hired a law firm that works with Big Oil to prosecute Donziger, but hid the trial from the public
Via petition for Donziger's release:
Steven Donziger is a US lawyer, Harvard Law alumnus, and environmental rights defender who represented victims of oil dumping in an emblematic case against Chevron Corporation in Ecuador, following accusations that the corporation was responsible for what is widely considered one of the worst oil-related environmental disasters in recent history.
He has been under pre-trial house arrest since August 2019 after he refused to comply with a court order to hand over his electronic devices, arguing that such a disclosure could compromise the confidentiality of the communications with his clients and put them at risk. The detention follows a long-running smear campaign of intimidation and harassment against Steven Donziger and other human rights defenders by Chevron.
In September 2021, the UN Working Group on Arbitrary Detention found that Steven Donziger’s deprivation of liberty is arbitrary because it lacks any legal basis and is in violation of several norms relating to the right to a fair trial, including the apparent lack of impartiality of the courts. Moreover, the Working Group concluded that his detention appears to be in retaliation for his work as a legal representative of Indigenous communities in Ecuador.
Despite serious concerns over the lack of independence, objectivity and impartiality of the judge who ordered the pre-trial house arrest and who has overseen the trial over criminal contempt charges, Steven Donziger was sentenced on 1 October to the maximum penalty of 6 months in prison and denied the possibility to be released pending an appeal.
We urge the Department of Justice to assume jurisdiction over the case instead of the private prosecutor, and promptly implement the UN Working Group’s decision by ensuring that Steven Donziger is released immediately and unconditionally. We also call on Attorney General Garland to launch a full and independent investigation of the circumstances surrounding Steven Donziger’s arbitrary deprivation of liberty and take the necessary measures to ensure that corporations do not abuse the justice system to target and harass human rights defenders.

found a post about this to reblog bc i heard some news about this issue. just in case any of you guys need further reason to despise Chevron. Steven Donzinger was able to get home for the holidays due to pressure from some congress members, but that this happened at all is a disgrace and sets a horrible precedent. there’s more information on Donzinger’s twitter, which is @ SDonzinger

my problem with “choice feminism” à la buzzfeed isn’t that it focuses too much on choice but rather that choice feminists don’t seem to want substantive, free choice at all. they don’t want to investigate the context of women’s decisions (what atwood would call the rat’s maze). they don’t want to challenge power structures or belief systems that restrict or coerce women’s choices. just like in sex positivity, their concern is not the freedom to choose yes or no but rather the willingness & enthusiasm to say yes.
if you describe cultural coercion (like the reward-punishment system that pushes women to wear make-up), choice feminists will defend make-up by saying that they choose to wear it. they don’t attempt to refute feminist analysis, they just proudly declare that they don’t mind the coercion at all. when they say “i chose it, so those pressures don’t harm me”, they really mean “i like it, so i don’t care how those pressures harm others.”
anti-sjws sure do hate dyed hair a lot for people who watch anime
Because in anime, that’s the characters’ natural hair color nine times out of ten.
Anime Law #31 - Law of Follicular Chromatic Variability
Any color in the visible spectrum is considered a natural hair color [in anime]. This color can change without warning or explanation.
It’s almost as if the anti-sjws you rag on about can tell reality apart from fiction.
god we don’t even have to fucking try anymore
Well, I don’t see any real-world human beings with pink or neon green hair as a NATURAL hair color.
did you learn that in anime law school
Like usual, these people don’t actually make an argument and just latch on to what they deem stupid and beat it do death so they don’t actually have to make a point.
might be my prudish catholic upbringing jumping out but imho makeup companies shouldn’t name their products after explicit sexual terms
just my opinion but if the makeup industry is going to market towards young girls who haven’t even hit puberty yet and insist that they have hundreds of dollars worth of high end makeup then they cannot name their products things like ‘climax’ and ‘super orgasm’ or even make puns like ‘glow job’ or claim in bold letters that the mascara is ‘sex proof’ when these young girls have no idea what any of these terms mean and frankly they shouldn’t understand the meaning behind an eyeshadow called ‘daddy’s girl’ or a blush called deep throat it’s all part of the hyper-sexualization of young girls and it’s just getting worse and worse in this new age of instagram/youtube mua’s where girls as young as 8 years old are being pressured into having a beat face that makes them look my age
but that’s just my opinion

Proposed New Mississippi Flag, currently under consideration by the state legislature
from /r/vexillology Top comment: Context: state rep Kathy Sykes (D) introduced this flag as an alternative in the State House. The flag was designed by Laurin Stennis, an artist and granddaughter of longtime US Senator John C. Stennis. Ms Stennis aims to restore Mississippi’s reputation breaking with the darkest aspects of her state’s past, as well as bring a measure of redemption to her family name, given her grandfather’s support for segregation. Unfortunately, it’s unlikely to get far, as stage legislative elections are this year, and few lawmakers are going to risk their careers over the state flag.
#still in awe that mississippi’s flag is still Like That
Just about every major politician from Mississippi wants the flag changed. Including the Republicans. Hell, known homophobe Roger Wicker is one of the biggest proponents of changing the flag. Democrats, Republicans, everyone wants the flag gone. Everyone, that is, except governor Phil Bryant.
And his is the only opinion that matters.
I looked up the current flag and….oh…. Yeah they need to change that ASAP
