So you just downloaded the game and are like “dafuq is going on here?”
You look around and there are unknown chicks with weird clothes spelling nonsense, posters of you and your lame clothes and the word “star” is everywhere.
Don’t worry, It gets better. I’ll help you out, ‘cause the game tutorial sucks.
Basically, the game goal is to become a Star Girl. The Star Girl is a title given to the winners of the beauty contests held weekly ingame. For that to happen, you gotta have great connections, a really cool outfit with high charm and lotsa currency to advertise your characters, ‘cause it’s up to the players’ choice who’s the winner. Animoca, the game’s company, classifies it as a “fashion RPG”.
There are four stats to which you should pay attention here, which are all displayed at the top of your screen:
Level: You need exp (stars) to level up. You get’em by performing quests, jobs and mini games. Higher levels unlock better outfits, which unlock new boyfriends.
Energy: Every action (except Job) takes up some energy. Mini games take 4 each, flirting takes two, making calls and texting take 1 to 2. Your energy gauge raises up to 30 according to your level. If you log into Facebook, that limit is raised to 40. You recover one energy every six minutes. The game auto suggests you to recover it all with your diamonds, but yo, don’t do that. They’re far too precious (and hard to get, unless you’re hacking) to be wasted on that.
Gold: Primary ingame currency. You get it mostly from jobs, quests, sometimes mini games. Also as the second gift of many boyfriends. You use it to buy clothes, flirt or to play at wheel of fortune, also to join a beauty contest.
Diamonds: Secondary currency. Used to buy top tier, high charisma outfits, hard flirting or self advertising. They can be obtained through real money investments, boyfriend gifts, leveling up, the wheel of fortune game or through Tapjoy offers. You better not believe that diamonds are gonna be your best friends here, ‘cause they’ll be gone in a whoosh.
I’m hella lazy, so Imma list them in order of appearance, from left to right.
ATM: Pretty much the game currency shop. Except for the energy, which is refilled with diamonds, you can buy gold and diamonds with real money here.
Your Place: Here you can check who voted for you (crown icon), change clothes (you can do this anytime), invite boyfriends over and collect their gifts.
Post office: Warns you about new contests.
Star Fashion Mall: Filled with places for you to waste your money at. Keep in mind: less is more. Your wardrobe can get pretty messy otherwise. I’ll make a better shop list on another post, but basically:
Star Vogue: dresses, tops, bottoms, socks, shoes.
Star Luxury: hats, bracelets, glasses, necklaces, earrings, bags.
Star Salon: hairstyles, tattoos, faces.
Rock Star: tops, bottoms, socks, shoes, piercings, glasses, necklaces and bags. If you dig rocker/harajuku-ish fashion, you know where to hang out.
Star Wow: if you’re familiar with online Otome Games such as The Cinderella Contract and Once Upon a Fairy Love Tale (might become addictive... visit them at your won risk! hahaha), you’re probably familiar with the word “Gacha”. Star Wow is an outfit Gacha, a lottery. You pay 400 diamonds or 40k coins for the chance of getting unique items (or not). If you already had what you got, you get a (surprise: another lottery) chance to refund up to 80% of its original price in diamonds or gold. The lotteries are seasonal, and it’s very hard to get the special outfits, unfortunately. I might make a video about that eventually.
Star Bridal: hats, dresses, tops, bottoms, shoes and necklaces. Fancy wedding gear.
Star Diva: hats, tops, dresses, bottoms, gloves, wings, socks, shoes, earrings and necklaces. If you dig looking like flappers or a samba schooler, come here.
Star Secrets: swim suites, lingeries
Cosplay Star: hats, dresses, tops, bottoms, gloves, wings, socks, shoes, earrings, glasses, necklaces, bags. Ever wanted to cosplay Padmé Amidala? Come on over and spend bunches of diamonds at the perfect outfit! May the force be with you, fellow fashionista.
Fashion Competition: Everything about the current contest, from the top ten to a chance to change your outfit. But you gotta spend diamonds if you wanna know your ranking.
Job Center: Here you’ll find every job for each of the ingame carreers (singing, modeling, acting). You won’t spend anything to start any of these tasks, only diamonds if you wanna finish them early or get the rewards from an expired job.
Star Cafe: Six floors, 4 handsome (?) fellas at each. To unlock higher floors, you need expensive clothes (what a wonderful world). You’ll spend energy to flirt basically, gold if you wanna flirt harder and diamonds if you wanna cash grab the guy (literally).
Bar Star Club: Six floors, 4 handsome (?) idols at each. To unlock higher floors, you need expensive clothes (yep, again). Every time you succeed on a mini game, you get to choose one of three gift boxes. You might wanna nail all these guys ‘cause they give better rewards. Instead of energy, you need buddies to aid your flirting. My suggestion is to place your phone/tablet at a safe place and slam the button with two fingers with the aid of only two friends. You’ll notice you’ll get them all quickly. Don’t worry if you fail, though, their heart gauge will increase anyways (unless you forget to play the game).
Carnival: Rewarding mini games. The better your score, the better the rewards. Just like the flirt mini game, once you fill up the gift gauge you get one out of three gifts. Good luck chasing that outfit you want!
Wheel of Fortune: This fella... It’s tough, but you might manage to get a timing for this guy. But most of the time you’ll waste 500 coins for little to no rewards.
Where are my Clothes? Easiest way to farm game rewards. You can easily pull off a 40 outfits combo if you focus, and that guarantees you at least 50% of the gauge. It consumes 4 energy units.
Jewel Blitz: A bit tricky to get over 40% of the gift gauge. You gotta make a real big combo. You can move gems while the game combos automatically. but if you rest for a short while, it quickly breaks your combo. Consumes 4 energy units.
Boyfriends: Gotta catch’em all! -- uhh, say whut?
Once you get started with the interface, you’ll notice boyfriends are some of your many quests. Don’t worry about ditching them, it can’t happen. Each boyfriend gives you three gifts: one the first time they’re invited, the next one after spending two hours at your place and lastly, after twelve hours, you get his last gift. Just like the jobs, you don’t need to be around for that to happen. You invite him in and go do your stuff, after a while you come back and the gift will be ready.
I’ll make a list of boyfriends and their gifts on another post. I might need help with that, ‘cause I already went past most of them. Ugh. So, message me and lead a hand! <3
Leveling up is pretty easy at first. You pretty much gotta pay attention to an icon at the top left of your screen. That’s the Quest Menu. You’ll probably get to level 5 or so pretty quickly. Before engaging on questing, set every job to roll on their fastest careers. Their exp will boost your early leveling.
Save your money. Save your diamonds. You’ll need them when you have to unlock new boyfriends.
Remember to set the 8/12h jobs to roll while you sleep or go to school once you reach level 8. Make sure the notifications are on. You’ll be pretty upset if you let these expire :P
You can invite a new boyfriend over even if you didn’t get the previous one’s gift. You can invite him back later by clicking on the heart icon (lower right corner) at your place. Don’t worry, you won’t have to wait for the 2 or 12 hours again, the counter will be back to where it was before. Focus on getting the first two gifts while you’re playing, use the job notifications to remind you of that. Leave the 12h ones to roll when you’re too busy to obsess over it. These gifts are usually pretty cool.
Once you unlock boyfriend floors, you’ll notice you get daily texts from a guy that isn’t at the bar nor at the club. Those guys are pricks and don’t let you call them. Remember to save a batch of energy before answering their texts, 'cause replying will lead you to a date. Flirt with them, as you won’t want to waste your precious gold with these hard to gets.
Need friends for the Club flirting? Head to the game’s Facebook page. Each post is filled with friend codes down at the comments. Focus on the girls who promise to vote back at the contests.
Even if you’re not confident with your outfit, give the contests a try! They might reward you with “x% off” tickets to be used at the stores. you’ll enjoy that, trust me.
You can play the game offline, but never forget to hit the save button as soon as you get wi-fi. The game might crash or lose progress if you alternate apps.
Invest on a good dress as soon as you get enough money. Once you’re done with the guys of one floor, try accessorizing to proceed. Focus on getting stuff you don’t own yet (tattoos, purses, necklaces) with gold.
Farm gold and diamonds, save them to unlock boyfriend floors. Leave long carreer jobs and 12h gift waits rolling as you’re busy, turn on notifications. Quest. Save energy for the unreachable boyfriend. Get Friend codes from Star Girl Facebook page. Hit save button frequently.
