So it turns out that the post I spent a while writing didn't actually make it here! I hit send and then it got lost somewhere in the wild barrens of the tumblr upload process. So. Let's try this again!

I'm Ash, and this is an oil pastel drawing (painting?) based on a coffee mug I painted a few years ago with a similar visual. That original painting has been falling apart for years now, and this was my way of both experimenting with oil pastels and giving that older idea a new lease on life.

Back when I first painted that coffee mug I was going through a period of self discovery. I wanted to once again embrace my younger self's interest in wolves and their related mythology. This artwork evolved from that desire. In going from ceramic mug to canvas board, and from acrylic paint to oil pastel, certain details changed. The forest background was added with this newer iteration for example. I like to think I kept the essence of that first attempt though.

The hole in the fence being a little bigger after she goes missing is such a cool detail. Like it's been going on for a while. I love the "before" and "after" structure too. It gives it a sense of narrative from the passing of time. So so well done.

no dude it's so cool how attached you are to that character who is singled out and ostracized due to the external monstrousness that clashes with their internal spark of humanity. and i love how drawn you are to themes of horror and love, nature versus nurture, otherness, isolation, and the abject. i bet you have normal feelings about your own personhood
