Day 1 of the non-dominant hand challenge!

Non-Dom December!

Hello everyone! You know how artists can get those nasty wrist and arm pains? And if unchecked, or not taken care of properly, those wrist pains can get bad enough to make tendinitis, or other serious debilitating problems- limiting art, and writing, and all sorts of stuff like that? Its a serious, VERY serious issue that can impact you the rest of your life– and people say that it makes it so that you can no longer draw the way you used to. But whenever people say that, they always seem to ignore one major thing- that we were born with TWO hands and two arms, not just one– and our other arm can be trained as well!  People can become Ambidextrous who didn’t start out like that, even if the work is hard!! And by learning how to use BOTH your hands/arms for the same tasks, you can alleviate stress on either one of them.

This is why I’m creating NON-DOMINANT DECEMBER, where you can have fun and build confidence, in building the strength in your non-dominant arm/hand!

Your brain already KNOWS how to draw, and/or write, you just need to TRAIN your other arm to do so!

My wrist has been hurting on and off, and although I take the precautions, such as wrist-stretches, hot and cold water therapy, taking breaks, blah blah, having to halt my work for a couple days to recover is still an issue- especially when I’m inspired. And the fear of permanent damage is always there.

That is why, I thought this challenge would be both fun, and beneficial for all artists of any type!

Important: BEFORE BEGINNING THIS CHALLENGE: Know and read these things.

-Do not get mad or frustrated if your non-dom arm isn’t making things work out like they do with your primary arm. Also, understand that it is WEAKER than your primary arm, and is not used to repeated use. If it starts feeling weird, take a break and do stretches, take hours if necessary for your own health- when its back to normal, start again. - Be proud of what your non-dom arm can accomplish, and do not compare what it can do to your dominant hand. You don’t compare the intellect of a college graduate to a kindergartner! Your non-dom arm is doing something new, and must be taught! - WikiHow - 3 ways to become Ambidextrous  -How to Strengthen Your Less Dominant Hand -Video - Wrist/Arm exercises for Tendinitis/Carpal Tunnel (Also just use these in general if you’re an artist anyway, they’re important and great for preventative work)

-and of course- DO NOT OVERBURDEN YOURSELF or push yourself too hard, period! Pain is pain, and pain means something is wrong. If it hurts, stop, period! - P.S. Use a pen that glides ink easily. No need to deal with frustrating cheap ball points on TOP of slow, steady, glitchy handwriting.

The Challenge:

Every day, or close to every day, write or draw something with your non-dominant hand and perhaps even post it. It doesn’t matter how good it is at the start, the major thing is the improvement by the end. This can also include: practicing everyday activities you tend to do with your dominant hand, to do instead with your non-Dominant hand. (The Wikihow, once again, is a great example for this) According to a Wikihow contributor - with daily practice you can learn how to draw and/or write as well with your non dominant hand as your dominant hand, in about 2-3 months. That is INCREDIBLE. Just from a day of practicing, I could believe it. Some prompts to try, and try your own!

-Write the alphabet 6-10 times.

-Write the names of characters you enjoy

-Draw OUT characters you enjoy -Draw faces, or hairstyles, practice comics. -Draw or write what YOU want to draw, this is for fun and improvement! I’ve decided to start this challenge early, and I hope to continue months afterward as well, to become truly ambidextrous.
