i'm totally crazy, i freak out all the time, but you know what helps me most? learning. reading. studying. discussing. sometimes you do need a nap, but sometimes you need a conversation with someone more knowledgeable/experienced, or a day at the (physical or digital) library. and really i think everyone has a different baseline emotional register that's best for them and their circumstances, but i recommend aiming to feel solid and anchored, not necessarily "calm." of course we won't feel "calm" after reading about genocide. but if we approach what we're reading correctly, it can strengthen our resolve; feed our fighting spirit; show us paths to liberation. a lot of people in my life have diagnosed me with "revolutionary optimism" and wonder how i maintain that mindset but i'm not an optimist by nature, it all comes from studying

Just listened to a video essay talking about the stress around gift giving and how much junk and overconsumption is involved. This seems to be a big issue for a lot of people. As someone who loves gift giving a stupid amount but does not experience this stress, let me put you guys on to some of the gifts that have really changed the game for me and my family.

Special stuff to do together:

By this I mean, i have for almost a decade gifted my grandma a card promising her a summer picnic. She doesn't need any stuff but what both of us love is food and also spending time together, so I had the idea of taking her out on a picnic where i do all of the food, planning and organising and she gets to just sit back and enjoy. she loved it so much she said immediately that she never wanted anything else ever again. This is easy to adjust and apply for other people too: I have given my dad a planned out movie marathon night (with food) and my husband a surprise mystery date. At least for everyone I know, this is always a huge hit, and also can be done at any time of the year that is best for you

a Christmas fetch quest:

My mom is another person who is very specific about her interests and doesn't need any more stuff, so for years she's come up with some kind of a christmas task for me to do. one year it was to get her a used tea pot of a specific size and a new grapefruit spoon. another year it was a specific knitting pattern book + choosing a sweater i wanted & getting the yarn for it so she could just immediately start knitting. This too has been a huge hit. I find these quests super fun and it's worked great for us, which brings me to

Mini book club:

One year for my Christmas fetch quest mom asked me to get her a specific book, but she wanted me to read it first, so when she got done with it, we would immediately be able to talk about it together. Then if I wanted, I could also give her something else related (like last year the book dealt in part with circus performing, so I also got us tickets to the circus). This has been a huge hit, and it is what we do most years, including this year. It's been super fun for me and i have now asked this year for her to also read a book for me. It's fantastic and it is always exciting to give her the book with an "i can't WAIT till we get to talk about this soon!"
