Lexa (레카) (2001-2002) -> Part 1/2
Lexa is a 3D animated fantasy series produced by Dream Pictures 21 in South Korea. The show was supervised by Kim Il-kwon, with the script penned by Park Ji-yeon. It was broadcast on EBS and made available on VHS and DVD formats.
In addition to EBS, Lexa was also aired on various other platforms, including Talent Self-Broadcasting, Arirang TV, iTV Gyeongin Broadcasting, OBS Gyeongin TV, and Tooniverse. This broad distribution helped the series reach a wider audience within South Korea.
The series ran for a total of 26 episodes, with its broadcast period spanning from August 22, 2001, to May 31, 2002. Lexa's unique blend of 3D animation and fantasy elements contributed to its appeal during its airing.
Introduction
'Lexa' (Pronounced as Rekka/ Reka in Korean) holds the distinction of being South Korea's first 3D animated television series. Produced by Dream Pictures 21 in collaboration with EBS in 2001, it premiered on EBS 1TV two years prior to the debut of 'Pororo the Little Penguin.' The series comprises a total of 26 episodes, and its title is derived from the ancient Hebrew term 'Lekreka,' which translates to "go for you."
As a unique entry in the realm of early 2000s Korean animation, 'Lexa' stands out as a fantasy series. This uniqueness may explain the involvement of voice actors from the popular series 'Pororo,' who lent their talents to this project. The animation's distinct style and narrative set it apart from other contemporary works.
The story line follows the protagonist, Dori, as she embarks on a quest with her friends to rescue her mother, Gaia, who has been captured by the Demon King. Their adventure is not only a personal mission but also a race against time to prevent the world from succumbing to evil forces. This blend of personal stakes and broader themes of heroism and friendship contributes to the series' appeal.
The main characters from the animated tv series and in the bottom right corner was the coed group that are called 'Lexa' that portrayed these characters and sung the opening and closing songs from the same show.
Plot
Dori, a resident of the tranquil fairy village, unwittingly falls victim to the schemes of the villainous Rosia, leading her to read a spell from a sinister black magic tome. This fateful act results in the abduction of Gaia, Dori's mother and the goddess of the earth, whose essence is seized by the malevolent demon lord Katan, long imprisoned for a millennium.
In the wake of this devastating loss, Dori receives a prophetic message from the Tree of Wisdom, prompting her to embark on a quest to gather ten jewels that embody fragments of Gaia's power. Joined by her friends Gonji, Chris, and Jam Jam, Dori confronts her own vulnerabilities, transforming them into sources of strength as they journey together toward the Demon King's castle.
Upon reaching the castle, Dori and her companions successfully locate the ten jewels necessary to seal Katan and restore Gaia, who is revealed to be an angel. With Katan defeated and Gaia revived, she ascends to the heavens, leaving the children with a solemn promise to safeguard their world with beauty and grace.
Introduction 2
The work immerses viewers in a narrative reminiscent of a live-action role-playing game, drawing heavily from the rich tapestry of Greek and Roman mythology, Norse legends, and classic fairy tales. This familiarity lends a sense of nostalgia, even as the story unfolds with a blend of traditional and innovative elements.
Released in 2001, the limitations of 3D technology are evident, resulting in stiff and awkward character movements. While the evolving costumes and items add visual interest, the action sequences often lack the necessary tension to engage the audience fully. Although magic is a component of the narrative, its infrequent appearances diminish its impact, leaving the adventure scenes feeling somewhat underwhelming.
Initially, the series received criticism from both teenagers and adults for its perceived immaturity; however, its ratings improved significantly after its conclusion. The first half may induce discomfort due to its awkwardness, yet viewers appreciated the darker, more immersive plot developments that followed. The protagonists' growth during their adventures resonated with elementary school audiences, and the surprisingly appealing 3D characters contributed to a favourable reception, ultimately leading to respectable ratings.
The latter half of the narrative certainly captivates the audience more than the conclusion, which bears a striking resemblance to Sword Master Yamato. Despite the series achieving commendable ratings, there was a notable absence of merchandise or related products, primarily due to a lack of strategic financial planning. The sequel, Recca Sangokuji, aired on MBC in 2004, and the decision to rename it Reka, despite its focus on the Three Kingdoms and characters like Liu Bei, Guan Yu, and Zhang Fei depicted as insects, stemmed from a sense of missed opportunities.
Although Reka Three Kingdoms garnered a positive reception, it struggled to gain traction and was overshadowed by its predecessor, Reka, ultimately fading into obscurity due to limited rebroadcasts. Initially intended as a direct sequel, Reka 2 was announced following the conclusion of its compilation on EBS in 2002. However, the project underwent numerous changes, including shifts in the production team, before evolving into Reka Three Kingdoms, which incorporated elements of both the Three Kingdoms narrative and insect characters. Insights shared by the scenario writer during this period shed light on the complexities of the project.
Plans for Season 2 included a web novel release through Dream Webtoon on YouTube, managed by the production company Dream Pictures 21, but serialization has yet to commence. While a book was published, only Volume 4, titled 'Water Bow,' was released before the series was discontinued, disappointing fans. The voice cast featured notable talents such as Eom Sang-hyun, Cha Myung-hwa, Son Won-il, Koo Ja-hyung, and Kim Hwan-jin, whose performances received acclaim. Interestingly, the casting choices led to a unique dynamic, as the voice of the main character's girlfriend was the same as that of his mother, creating a playful narrative twist.
The three primary characters in this narrative—Dori, Gonji, and Jam Jam—derive their names from playful sounds that children often make, specifically "Dori Dori~ Gonji Gonji~ Jam Jam!" These names are rooted in the ten lessons of Dandong, a traditional oral parenting method. Each name carries a specific meaning: Dori Dori (道理道理) encourages children to ponder the principles of the universe by shaking their heads, Gonji Gonji (坤地坤地) uses a gesture of tapping the left palm with the right index finger to convey the concept of Earth, and Jam Jam (持闇持闇) imparts the wisdom of balance through the act of clenching and unclenching hands, symbolizing the importance of knowing when to hold on and when to let go.
As the narrative unfolds, the characters' dynamics and rhythm become increasingly captivating. Despite the passage of over two decades since the game's initial release, the allure of its setting and characters remains strong, prompting a significant number of fans to express a desire for a high-quality remake. This enduring appeal highlights the timeless nature of the story and its characters, suggesting that they continue to resonate with audiences across generations.
Opening Theme Song -> 'Go your way'
The group that performed the opening song is known as 'Reka,' featuring Geumbi from Turtles as 'Sua' and Boom as 'Mino,' with both the singer and the anime character sharing the same name. They adopted the name Reka in connection with their involvement in this song, and their English name is Lexa. During broadcasts, Boom often reflected on his challenging past, humorously presenting himself as a jokester while expressing his aspirations to dominate the music industry, a goal he ultimately did not achieve.
In the song 'Rekareka Chan! Chan!', listeners can distinctly hear Boom's voice in the middle section. When they performed this piece, Geumbi donned a costume as Gonji, while Boom took on the role of Dori. Surprisingly, their portrayals were quite fitting, showcasing their ability to embody the characters effectively.

Closing Theme Song -> 'Take off'
Lyrics in English: Your dream that won't stop Now I'm about to leave you Because I love you So that you can fly far away You secretly turn your head away from my love that has become a burden Even though you feel me leaving you, you pretend not to notice Thinking of you differently My appearance is shabby I can't see youChange my life Think again Break your heart Look into your heart Show me now There's no love in it anymore Change my life Take off me, who wants to escape You need to know my heart Bye Bye Bye Now you're without me You know I can't take you Lately, the heart that I've been longing for Now take all the hearts that I've loved I know I can't just get back Thinking of you differently My appearance is shabby I can't see youChange my life Think again Break your heart Look into your heart Show me now There's no love in it anymore Change my life Take off me, who wants to escape You need to know my heart Bye Bye Bye Now you're without me The image of you in the past The me who loved you is disappearing I can't stand it anymore, there's no end Change my life (Erase all the images of me that came to you) Break your heart Bye Bye, erase everything, it never happened

Characters:
In this narrative context, all characters mentioned are fairies unless specified otherwise. The staff at Witch School, however, seem to be human, as indicated by their rounded ears. Additionally, the inhabitants of the Kingdom of Kudi, along with the mermaids and demons, including those from the Boba tribe, represent distinct races separate from fairies.
From left to right: Elder Kilroman - Gaia - Shuri - Cardamom - Jam Jam - Dori - Gonji - Chris - Kira - Chief Boba - Rosia.
Main Characters:
The narrative features main characters often referred to as legendary warriors, collectively known as the Children of Destiny. This group consists of six individuals, recognized for their remarkable achievements and the order in which they ascended to legendary status.
Dori, voiced by Eom Sang-hyun (엄상현), is the central character of this narrative, a fairy residing in a quaint fairy village. Her journey begins when she sets out to rescue her mother, who has been captured and taken to the castle of the Demon King. Throughout her quest, Dori harnesses the power of fire-attribute magic, which plays a crucial role in her adventure.
Gonji, voiced by Cha Myeong-hwa (차명화), is an elf hailing from a lakeside village, encounters Dory in the city while accompanied by Chris. Their initial interactions are marked by tension, but as time progresses, their relationship evolves positively. Gonji possesses the ability to wield water magic, complementing her combat skills with her physical prowess.
Jam Jam, voiced by Jeong Ok-ju (정옥주), is a boy genius characterized by his arrogant demeanor. He embarks on adventures alongside Dory, Gonji, Chris, and their companions. Although he wields wind magic, his proficiency in its application leaves much to be desired.
Cardamom, known as Shuri and voiced by Son Won-il (손원일), is a character who was raised by the fairy elder Kilroman in the absence of his parents. His upbringing left him with a profound sense of neglect and an inferiority complex related to his responsibilities. Following the shattering of the barrier with Gaia, Shuri returned to his human form. However, he succumbed to the manipulations of the villain Rosia, leading to a significant misinterpretation of the intentions of his guardian, which ultimately resulted in his transformation into a demon. Aligned with the forces of evil and exploited by the Demon King, he obstructed the quest of Dori and his allies. The narrative takes a poignant turn when the fairy elder sacrifices himself for Shuri, prompting the latter to reflect on his actions and seek redemption. Shuri possesses the abilities to wield shadow and electric magic, as well as the power of flight.
Chris, known as Koo Ja-hyung (구자형), is a striking young man hailing from a lakeside village alongside Gonji. As a disciple of Gonji's grandfather, Helios, he possesses a range of healing and auxiliary magic, akin to a priest in a bookstore. Despite his promising abilities, Chris's character is somewhat undermined by the voice actor's portrayal, leading to perceptions of him being less impactful. Early in the narrative, he is unexpectedly kidnapped by Kira, the daughter of the Demon King, which significantly alters his trajectory. During his captivity in the Demon King's castle, Chris finds himself in a state of melancholy, contemplating escape while remaining largely inactive until he eventually joins the main party. In a surprising twist, he is later revealed to be a legendary warrior, ultimately becoming a formidable weapon before meeting a heroic end. His tendency to faint after using recovery magic adds a layer of complexity to his character, though it may also come off as a humorous quirk. Despite his striking appearance, which initially suggests he would be popular, Chris does not fare well in popularity polls. His early capture limits his role, and upon joining the protagonist's group, he quickly transitions into a weaponized figure, leaving little room for character development. While his looks attract attention from female characters and occasionally lead to misunderstandings with male characters, his overall impact on the story remains subdued, overshadowed by the more dynamic arcs of those around him.
Kira, voiced by Choi Hyang-yoon (최향윤), is a fairy and the offspring of Naefin, the Forest Spirit King, and Angelica, the Queen of Vegetation, has a complex backstory marked by adversity. After being abducted by Rosia, she fell under a curse and was raised by the Demon King, which initially instilled in her a sense of arrogance and self-doubt. However, as time passed, Kira underwent a significant transformation, cultivating a compassionate nature that led her to assist others, including Cardamom. She possesses the ability to wield ice-attribute magic, further enhancing her unique character within the narrative.
Other Characters:
Guide Station -> Rim, voiced by Hong So-young (홍수영), is not a legendary warrior but rather a spirited animal that wields Gaia's treasure known as the "Key of Wisdom." This talkative rabbit spirit, who prefers to be called the 'Legendary Guardian' and the 'Spirit that Rules the Guardians,' exhibits a certain pride in his status as a high-class guardian, despite his somewhat troublesome nature. Interestingly, he harbors a fear of heights, even though he possesses the ability to float. True to his name, Rim has the power to command and control all animals and can perform simple magic. In the Magic School episode, he takes control of a magical bird created by Rosia, wielding it like a spear, while in Vivi's Cave, he transforms a nervous chick into a water-squirting elephant to defeat Vivi's match doll. His enthusiasm is palpable when he encounters new treasures, as he eagerly explains their names and functions, hinting that his full name may be even more elaborate.
The Great Demon King Catan/ Katan -> Demon King Katan, voiced by Kim Hwan-jin (김환지), is a character endowed with remarkable powers that emit light from his eyes, coupled with a benevolent nature. A millennium ago, he valiantly battled against Gaia, who descended from the heavens with the intent to envelop both the fairy and human realms in darkness. Despite his efforts, Katan was ultimately defeated and imprisoned. However, after a thousand years, he orchestrated his revenge by abducting Gaia and bringing her to his castle, marking a significant turn in their tumultuous history.
Executive Members:
Rosia, voiced by Lee So-young (이소영), is a cunning and meticulous witch known for her vicious nature. As the trusted advisor to the immobilized Demon King Katan, she orchestrates various schemes on his behalf from the confines of the Demon King's castle. Proficient in both earth-attribute and dark magic, she also demonstrates considerable skill in swordsmanship. It is rumoured that Rosia was once a fairy, but she underwent a transformation into a demon after forging a pact with an earth demon.
Lower-ranking Members:
Boba Clan Leader, previously referred to as the 'Boba tribe leader,' is a member of the Boba tribe, and his name is indeed Boba. Voiced by Hong So-young (홍수영) and Son Won-il (손원일), he occupies a unique position within the narrative, residing in the Demon King’s castle as a subordinate of Roshia, who serves the Demon King Katan. Although he is not a traditional antagonist, his role as the leader of the Boba tribe involves the creation of various monsters, which often exhibit flaws due to his lack of intelligence. Despite this, the main characters also display weaknesses, ensuring that Boba's creations pose some level of threat. Notably, he is characterized by a flower in his hair, suggesting a male identity, and his name reflects his foolish nature. In episode 16, a pivotal moment occurs when Roshia slaps Boba, causing him to fall and temporarily gain intelligence. During this brief period, his voice changes to a more regal tone akin to Katan's, and he commands an armoured knight to confront legendary warriors alongside Roshia. However, this newfound intelligence is short-lived; after a fierce battle, he inadvertently reverts to his original state by striking his own head against the knight's after it is damaged by Alexandra. While he appreciates the power of his creations during his intelligent phase, his return to foolishness leads to frustration rather than mere annoyance, highlighting the complexities of his character within the story. He serves as a comedic supporting character, often the target of bullying from Roshia and Kira, yet he harbors a secret affection for Roshia. In episode 7, Kira is depicted soaring through the air while cradling Roshia like a princess, during which she playfully scrawls messages on a wall proclaiming 'Cardamon♡Kira' and 'Boba♡Roshia.' However, labelling this dynamic as mere unrequited love may be an oversimplification. Roshia, who embodies a villainous persona through her various nefarious actions, appears to lose her composure only when engaging in disputes with the leader of the Boba tribe. This has led some to speculate that her interactions with him are not merely those of a foolish infatuation but may indicate a deeper, more complex relationship, suggesting that she is not just a simple fool but rather someone with hidden motivations.
Koba, voiced by Choi Hyang-yoon (최향윤), is a male character whose name is derived from a blend of "kids" and "Boba." He stands out as the most endearing member of the Boba tribe and has a history of accompanying legendary warriors. Notably intelligent for his kind, Koba expresses his insights during the quest for the Key of Wisdom, remarking on the changes in circumstances over time. His interactions with Dori and Shuri, who are associated with cardamom, highlight his role in assisting them to uncover the Key of Wisdom from the Well of the Goddesses. When the legendary warriors reached the Great Demon King's Castle, they encountered a locked door that would not budge from the outside, prompting Dori to cry out in frustration. However, the door miraculously opened from within at just the right moment. This incident suggests that Koba and the Boba tribe possess demonic qualities, as they were able to access the castle. Additionally, Koba has been observed retrieving small, urgently needed items from his hat, a feat attributed to his ability to perform simple summoning magic, as noted in a special broadcast.
Nervous Chick, voiced by Jeong Ok-ju (정옥주), is a character who expresses frustration towards Boba, exclaiming that all the eggs were ruined due to his actions. Boba, who hatches from one of these eggs, emerges during a dramatic display where a large Boba showcases itself atop an egg carton, an event orchestrated to entertain Kira. Following this, Boba embarks on adventures with Koba. Despite his neurotic tendencies, Nervous Chick demonstrates a surprising level of realism and intelligence for his age, often teasing Koba throughout their journey. As time passes, he matures into a chicken, transitioning from being nestled inside Koba's helmet to becoming a mount for Koba, illustrating his growth and the evolving dynamics of their relationship.
The black pig is a sizable, dark green avian species known for its unique call, which resembles 'Gwaeak, Gwaeak.' The choice to name a bird after a pig reflects a creative approach to nomenclature. In the context of the Reka demons, who possess a humanoid appearance, the black pig is perceived as an animal. This creature was presented as a gift from the Boba tribe to Kira, who was then known as Neroli. As the narrative unfolds, the black pig assumes a crucial role, serving as a means of flight and facilitating journeys to the afterlife.
Other supporting roles:
Gaia, voiced by Cha Myung-hwa (차명화), is the goddess of the earth and the mother of Dori. A millennium ago, she descended from the heavens to confront the formidable demon lord Katan. While she succeeded in sealing him away, she could not vanquish him entirely. To thwart his return, Gaia divided her remaining powers into ten fragments and dispersed them across the globe. After exhausting her abilities, she transformed into an ordinary fairy and lived for another decade before ascending back to the celestial realm. However, Dori and Shuri fell victim to Rosia's deceit, leading them to the demon lord's castle instead of heaven. The central narrative revolves around the quest to locate the ten treasures Gaia left behind in order to rescue her from her imprisonment. Notably, in the work "Better than Gonji," she is depicted as the most beautiful woman.
Elder Kilroman, voiced by Jeon Tae-yeol (전태열), is a devoted figure from the hometown of Dori and Shuri, who nurtured Shuri with unwavering love and care. Despite his efforts, Shuri succumbs to Rosia's manipulative schemes and becomes a cardamom, leaving Elder Kilroman tormented by feelings of inadequacy and helplessness in his inability to protect her.
The Legendary Turtle Ship (The City Where Jam Jam Lived):
Jason, voiced by Kim Hwan-jin (김환진), serves as Jamjam's devoted butler, providing care and companionship after Jamjam's father abandoned him due to his wind fairy instincts. When Rosia attempted to steal the legendary turtle egg, Jason demonstrated his expertise by utilizing a talisman known as Fireball. Despite showcasing his veteran skills, he ultimately fell victim to a formidable opponent, leading to his tragic demise. This loss left a profound impact on Jamjam, as Jason was essentially his only family. In subsequent encounters, whenever Jamjam faces the enemy's illusionary magic, Jason's image resurfaces, indicating that his death has left a lasting trauma on Jamjam.
Sword of Fire (Magic School):
The majority of the members seem human, yet Dailyne's existence spans over a millennium, which raises questions about her nature. It appears that the Demon King's faction is aware of Gaia's treasure hidden within the school, prompting Rosia and others to propose strategies to bring the institution under the Demon King's influence. Had there been an active witch queen, the school might not have succumbed to crisis so easily; however, her prolonged slumber for decades renders her presence irrelevant. Although the institution is officially designated as a magic school, it is often perceived as a witch school due to its exclusively female student body. Notably, the title of episode 5 is "The Witches of Magic School," further emphasizing this perception.
Dailyne, the Queen Witch, is portrayed by the voice of Hong So-young (홍수영).
Teacher Kellen, voiced by Lee So-young (이소영), was once a student at the magic school a decade ago and the best friend of Rebecca, serving as a senior to both Witch and Marsha. His aspiration to become a teacher was thwarted when he was separated from Rebecca due to a scheme orchestrated by Rosia, which stemmed from a misunderstanding rather than any deterioration in their relationship. Now a teacher at the same magic school, Kellen demonstrates his abilities when he casts a haste spell on Dory, who is being pursued by a bird summoned by Rosia; however, the spell only increases her speed, making her struggle to keep up. Kellen's skills are further highlighted when he successfully dispels Rosia's Earthquake spell. Ultimately, he learns the truth from the Queen Witch, leading to a reconciliation with Rebecca. Additionally, when the Sword of Fire does not yet recognize Dory, he places it into the orb on her glove, signifying his support.
Rebecca, voiced by Jung Yoon-jung (정윤정), was once a prominent student at the magic school and the closest friend of Kellen, serving as a senior to both Whisky and Marsha a decade ago. Specializing in illusion magic, she fell victim to Rosia's manipulative schemes, which led her to abandon her studies and delve into forbidden black magic, ultimately resulting in her estrangement from Kellen and the institution. For ten years, she was confined in the underground classroom of the witch school by the royal witch Dailene, who aimed to eradicate Rebecca's dark powers. Despite her involvement with Rosia, who abandoned her, Rebecca managed to retain her sense of self, and upon learning the truth from the royal witch, she reconciled with Kellen. Her striking beauty contributed to her popularity, as she consistently ranked high in polls for female characters.
Whichi, voiced by Cha Myung-hwa (차명화), is a seven-year-old class president at a magic school and the best friend of Marsha. Although he is not inherently bad-tempered, his strong inclination to act on his own whims has led to a negative reputation among his peers. This reputation results in unjust punishments, including a stint as a cleaning lady and a brief imprisonment in an underground cell. During this time, he overhears a conversation between Rebecca and Rosia, which inspires him to take action to save the magic school. Dailyne describes him as having a fiery personality, suggesting he shares a similar past with Rebecca. Ultimately, he joins his friends to assist the warriors facing challenges in the Valley of Darkness as they journey toward the Great Demon King's Castle.
Masha, a seven-year-old student at a magic school and voiced by Jeong Ok-ju (정옥주), is the best friend of Whisky. Despite her gentle and quiet demeanour, she feels hurt when Whisky attempts to shield her from the attention of Rebecca and Rosia. When Whisky goes to awaken Dalyne, she responds with, "Ah… I haven't forgiven you yet!" and joins him. Dalyne describes Whisky as having a personality akin to water, suggesting a fluidity in his character that mirrors Kellen's past experiences. He makes a brief reappearance in the Valley of Darkness, adding depth to his role in the narrative.
Melissa, voiced by Jeon Tae-yeol (전태열), is an elderly witch and a teacher at the magic school, having instructed Kellen and Rebecca during their formative years. Currently, she appears to be fulfilling the role of principal, likely due to Dailyne's frequent bouts of sleep. However, during an attack by Rebecca and Rosia, Melissa was rendered incapacitated by Rebecca's illusion magic. This incident suggests that while Kellen and his peers hold her in high regard for her skills and character, she possesses a notable vulnerability to illusion spells. Furthermore, Dailyne's reference to Rebecca's past indicates that Melissa has previously faced challenges stemming from the same illusion magic that now affects her.
