To a great mind, nothing is little. – Sherlock Holmes
Welcome to day 12 of the 29 Days to Reviving Your All Natural Super Human.
I hear some stories from time to time that the US is thinking about doing away with pennies. “They’re a nuisance” and as currency goes, they’ve become almost obsolete, a pain to deal with. They’re just pennies, too insignificant to carry around and be bothered with; they’re a waste, so why not toss them?
It’s quite similar the way many of us look at time. Individual minutes, like the Lincoln heads, are a bit insignificant, we have plenty of them, so why get worked up over tossing a few away? What can I buy with 1 cent? What can I accomplish in 1 moment? Too trivial to total up to much, if I blow this one, there are plenty out there!
With economies around the world valued in trillions of dollars, what’s a hand full of copper going to do for you? In time’s ultimate currency of eons, what’s a hand full of minutes going to matter in the grand scheme of things? Given their “obvious irrelevance,” who really cares? What’s wrong with killing some time?
When one honestly calculates the power of this particular moment in all of time, the tables turn pretty quickly.
Like individual snowflakes eventually leading to awe-inspiring avalanches, or individual drops of rain filling all the oceans with their 326 million trillion gallons of water, seems the tiny, computed properly, isn’t so trivial after all. As Andre Gide put it, “gradation, gradation, and then a sunned leap.”
The pint-sized is really just the prodigious in waiting. What’s the saying? “Big things come in little packages” or as Stevie Ray Vaughn called it “Living Life by the drop.” I love that.
Take your day for example; if you divide your 24 hours in 20-minute segments, you have 72 opportunities to have a major impact on your life. Forget the passion-siphoning urban myth of 10,000 hours to gain mastery of any ability; you can begin, right now, in this 20 minutes, this 1/72 of your day to make substantial changes and progress in any area of your life. These tiny, handfuls of moment, are the true paths to mega in your life.
So, for the next 20 minutes, just 1/72 of our overall day, life by the drop right? Just for now, let’s suspend our certainties and adopt Carl Sandburg’s philosophy “Hope is an echo. Hope ties itself yonder, yonder, yonder.” For just a little while, right now, no yonder! Channel your inner Dante; “Abandon hope, all ye who enter here.” NO goals, no aspirations, no dreamy stratagems, longing or whishing, just relinquish the expedition mentality and passionately explore the adventure that is The Labyrinth at hand.
Plunge the rabbit holes, revere the randomness naturally flowing in and around you, detect and decode Ariadne’s Thread, or as I like to call them the “Fingerprints of Providence” dancing in your periphery. Like tealeaves or a cosmic popcorn trail, the hints at hand suggesting your next move.
It’s here where the clues to your genuine happiness, fulfillment and even personal and professional success shimmer in undulation, the lefts and rights, the stops and starts of Life’s labyrinth, in the maze of this moment you can be reborn.
Whatever your desire, whatever grabs your spine, invest just 20 minutes to treat yourself, to embrace your endeavor, to do your right thing. It doesn’t require the monumental, just a hand full of minutes to reorient yourself with the natural tools and temperaments you already authentically possess.
