Akzeriuth Shaft 14 and why it was bad
Ok.
No. Fuck this scene.
Alright, we get it, the town fell fucking far and everyone but the player's party and all the villains died. Some kid lived, but was horrifically injured, then died as poisonous mud engulfed him.
That's not the issue here. It's EVERYTHING regarding the reaction.
The only reasonable character here was Mieu, and maybe Luke.
Everyone else proved why "Tales of the Abyss" possibly could be called "Tales of Douchebags"
It WASN'T Luke's Fault. Stop blaming him. Ok, yes, Luke was whiny. He legitimately had a reason to be. Not only were there 10,000 dead, but get this: 1. He was used by his mentor. 2. He was fucking mind controlled. 3. Everyone WAS blaming him. [And no, really it wasn't his fault] The party basically shackled Luke [who wasn't, forget who used the power here, it's irrelevant] with the blame for 10,000+ deaths and treated him like trash as a result.
Look at the information the party has. We've got lethal poison seeping out of this mineshaft. It's gonna be a ton of deaths if nothing is done. Doing SOMETHING is got to happen. The only given information [because people behind the Hidden Score are FUCKING MORONS] is given that Luke will become a hero here. Van has shown to the player he's a "good guy" thus far, and this is especially true to everyone but Tear. So what options are there? It's listen to the guy who appears to be on your side or do nothing.
Only counter to this is Tear [who just doesn't trust Van for /CLASSIFIED/ REASONS] and Asch [who's been trying to kill you, and is reportedly in leagues with a guy who's trying to cause a war]. And even then, Tear isn't saying don't do it. It's just Asch. And all things at that point, Asch is an enemy, and not worth listening to.
Then at the Sephiroth itself, Luke is betrayed by Van and MINDCONTROLLED. This sequence could only have been averted by listening to Asch and if Tear had been verbal. Asch was enemy. Tear was silent.
...All of this is obvious to the party. Yet Luke is blamed. Sure he whined. He had every right to whine. He was innocent, and yet was being blamed and judged for actions he had no control over. Sure Jade just was fed up with the whining. But instead of continuing the assault on Luke, Jade could've attacked Natalia, or Tear. Or someone who was at fault for the whining.
Meiu and Luke were the only characters acting in the right in that entire mess.
And this scene really reeks of poor writing that just wanted to punch Luke in the face. For no good reason.
[And deigning to compare the scene to the first Tower of Salvation in Symphonia is stupid. They're both huge game defining moments, but ToS's moment is better handled by the cast.]
