Ten years ago, Augustine volcano in Alaska swelled, rumbled and erupted. A gigantic cloud of ash rose above the mountain and two lava flows crawled down its sides. The eruption resulted in ash fall throughout south-central Alaska and disrupted air traffic over the state. Historically, Augustine volcano has been the most active volcano in Alaska’s Cook Inlet region with recent eruptions in 1976, 1986 and 2006. Photo by Cyrus Read, @usgs. #tbt

Whoa. I wasn't expecting this. I threw 16 photos into a stitching program and this came out. This is actually a 360-degree view. The mountain on the left is the head of the one seen on the far right. The pano was actually supposed to end with the water to the right, but I think I like this better.
This giant panorama shows a couple of my crew members, my shadow, and the helicopter that took us to the top of this mountain, getting us a sweet view of the island volcano known as Augustine. From up here we spotted a grizzly bear in the valley to the south and a moose in the foothills to the north.
This week, the Alaska Volcano Observatory celebrates 25 years of monitoring and studying Alaska volcanoes. These efforts have improved global understanding of how volcanoes work and how to live safely with volcanic eruptions. The Alaska Volcano Observatory (AVO) is a joint program of the United States Geological Survey (USGS - a bureau of the Department of the Interior)), the Geophysical Institute of the University of Alaska Fairbanks (UAFGI), and the State of Alaska Division of Geological and Geophysical Surveys (ADGGS).
