Today I learned that tres leches (tri mleka) cake is a traditional desert in the Balkans, introduced to the region in the 15th century by the large community of Spanish Sephardic Jews who re-settled in the Ottoman Empire after the 1492 expulsion of Jews from Spain.
I was having lunch with a local author who’s been helping me out with my research and I saw it on the menu and said “oh, I’ve got to have that, it’s a Mexican desert I like from home.” Now I know that it’ so much more than that.
