First, hey babe, how are you? I've been so MIA recently. And I'm back with plant questions again (sorry?). (1) Okay, so my rosemary isn't doing so hot, I'm thinking because of how much fucking rain we've had this summer. (I mean, so much that conservative dad says "wow, maybe there is climate change.") I got some new rosemary (to benefit rescue animals). Should I put it in a pot until it's a big strong rosemary and can withstand the weird weather better?
Herbs contd: (2) My mint (in 2 pots, a spearmint and a chocolate) was doing great but one has got more dead bits now. Too much sun on that one maybe? B/c I was thinking it would like the access water. (3) Got some lemongrass & lemon balm over the weekend. Can you give me any tips on those? (esp as we're headign for fall/winter) I've got room to bring them in, and a screen porch that now isn't home to a kitten
Hey hey! That’s so funny, I just got home from an interview and I’m witchin’ it up in the kitchen and I just planted some lemon balm, so your timing is great (as always).
Re: Rosemary, yeah, its probably water. I think you have some good growing time left if you want to put it in the ground and try to let the roots establish, but if you wanted to be cautious and leave it in the screened room over the winter that wouldn’t hurt it either. Personally, I have terrible luck with rosemary, but my lavender grows well if I leave stones at the bottom of the hole I’m planting it in for better drainage all around, though that’ll only get you so far. If you do plant it outside, I’d say you should definitely mulch around it when it starts to get colder to keep the soil warm and give it time to establish its roots a little better.
Mint is neigh unkillable, and they love sun, so it might be a water thing? They love water, so maybe give it a little more lovin’ and see where that gets you. But also, mint has a dormant period, so it could be getting sleepy for the year, and it might just need some time to rest itself.
Ok I only grew lemongrass once, and the cats went apeshit and ate it. They love water, but check your temperature zone because your winters might be too hard for them to survive. Lemon balm also like water, but it prefers more shade and cooler temperatures
Neat fact: anything with a square stem is related to mints, so take a peek at your lemon balm ;)
